You will be very underwhelmed with the lifestyle options when coming from a solid home theater designed model. DLP may match the contrast of your old 8350, but the most comparable model to the 8350 today would be the Epson 4010. Better is their 5050UB, or LS11000/LS12000 series of projectors. Those are the direct upgrades to the 8350. The lack of zoom and lens shift means you are basically using keystone correction and digital zoom to make the image fit your screen. This loses resolution as well as light output when in use. Always. And should be avoided. It is still a personal decision, but I wouldn't expect you to feel like it is an upgrade in the least. But, you may be happy to live with it so you can put the projector where you want it.
My two cents based on my own basement build: Don't worry too much about 4K - a very good upscaled 1080p projector like an Epson 4010 or 5050 will look great at 120 inches. Standard width screen 16:9 will be most versatile. I get wanting the 2.35 and debated swapping to one for a while, but if 60% of watching will be streaming, I would just go 16:9. Also, a lot more cinematic content now is 16:9 or imax ratio, so you'll want 16:9 to maximize that. The Silver Ticket screens are great - I have the 110" acoustically transparent one and it looks great. Take all the savings from those choices and dump it all into audio - seriously. Don't know your plans here, but all most people care about is the boom (aka subwoofer you can feel). Spend extra on audio and it will truly feel like a movie theater (better actually).
This is true, however I had an Epson HC 4000, it looked much better than a regular 1080p projector. Not true 4K but there was noticeable improvement over 1080p and playing 4K content was able to see some advantages.
I have an EPSON 4010 that I mostly use outside, on the patio in the Winter and move to the side of the pool in the Summer. It is a beast size wise. But it has auto focus and lens shift and works great. I really need the lens shift to get the image just right over the pool in the summer so that was the primary reason I went this way.
There’s some other options at the 5k price if you’re open to it. There’s the Sony VPL-XW5000ES($5k) and the Epson Pro Cinema LS9000. The LS9000 has similar specs to the LS12000, but for $4k. I currently have an Epson Home Cinema 4010 and I’ve been considering the LS9000. It sucks that the price went up. Hope you find something you like! Edit: looks like there’s also Epson LS11000 for $4.5k
Yes, there are newer options but that would potentially bring you right up to your price cap. For example, Epson is selling refurbished 5040e's for CAD 2209. My Epson 4010 is 6 years old and hasn’t given me a lick of trouble. When it does give up the ghost I will look for a modern replacement with better black levels but I did feel the need to defend Epson. Two homes and two bulbs later and she’s still running great.
I miss that too, loved being able to switch from 16:9 content to 2.35:1 with lens memory on my Epson 4010 without screen size and shape restrictions, other than wall size of course :D
Same, have an LG G2 in family room to be able to watch TV on our first floor (and mostly for kid shows) but the main screen for movies, shows or big sporting events is our dedicated home theater with an Epson 4010 (soon to be LS12000) and 9.2 Atmos. Also have my PS5 hooked up to the G2 right now since the 4010 is not great at modern gaming.
