I’ve got the ultimate, the sound’s actually pretty impressive. Feels rich and spacious, definitely has that surround vibe.
Yeah, I like my N1S Ultimate but I also got a screaming deal on it (sub-$1K), but unless I'm watching 3D content I keep it at brightness level 5, or maybe 7. Luckily it's still quite bright
I was able to get a gently used one of these for under $1K (definitely the Ultimate). It's nice, but I mostly use it for bedroom wall or outdoor screen projection, not for a dedicated home theater. Some notes: Brightness - bright at all levels, even 1/10 is usably bright in a dark room. Above 5/10 however, I notice a slight red tint in deep blacks which is not there (more of a normal projector grey) when at 5/10 or below. Color quality also takes a hit below 3/10... so most of the time I keep it between 3-7. 10 if I'm watching a darker 3D movie, but it's a subtle difference. RBE - The Hook Up classified it as Moderate, I would say it's quite noticeable for me on any bright white spots, or when I move my eyes quickly - but I haven't seen that many projectors and I consider myself very sensitive to color changes. I can live with it - the cheap price I got helps - but for a dedicated HT projector I'd steer away from this if you can see RBE whatsoever. Gaming - once you're in one of the Low Latency modes - fantastic for anything but super competitive gaming. Really low latency for a projector, and totally usable as a monitor, doesn't feel bad whatsoever. It does not automatically switch (no ALLM support for consoles), and does not support keystone or 3D in LLM, so as a 3D watcher I find myself switching modes often. If you only watch 2D without keystone, just leave it on ultra-low latency and it's great. UI Performance - Bad. From a fresh boot or after running "System Acceleration" (afaik just closing all background apps), it's fine to navigate around. Opening too many apps in succession will slow it to a crawl and when streaming a movie from my Jellyfin server, opening menu overlays is REALLY slow. I just press and wait for it to appear sometimes. It's not unusable always, but it's not snappy. I'd say the built-in Google TV box is fine for portable or casual use, but for frequent or heavy use plugging in an HDMI device is going to feel a lot smoother. 3D - Supports SBS/OU/Frame-packed (They call it Blu-ray 3D but works with PS3 etc), but it does not detect or auto-switch on its own. You need to press the Settings button>navigate down to picture settings>navigate down to 3D mode>select the mode>wait for it to switch. *Then*, frequently it goes into an out-of-sync 3D mode that makes motion look strange. I find very frequently I have to turn 3D off and on again to get it properly in sync. I've tried multiple brands of glasses as well. I'm a big 3D movie person, and once in 3D mode it does look good, though RBE is *slightly* more noticeable IMO. Again, not something I'd buy for a dedicated 3D HT, but it's pretty dang good when it gets it right. Everything else is great, it's a good projector otherwise and I'm happy to answer questions about it, I just wanted to toss some things I wish I knew before I bought it out there.
(please notice that * This was an answer to this thread: [https://www.reddit.com/r/projectors/comments/1qbia6l/projector\_help\_needed/](https://www.reddit.com/r/projectors/comments/1qbia6l/projector_help_needed/) * for some reason I couldn't answer to it, so i copied the text) * I'm german and while i typed this in english, i let chat gpt have a look at it correct some spelling errors. but its my true story) Hello, I’m 38 years old and I started with an Epson. I don’t know if anyone still remembers the model, but it was an Epson EH-TW480. According to my Amazon account, I ordered it on August 16th, 2012 [the epson](https://preview.redd.it/duokb91rpddg1.jpg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63f3a76f34c3a16fecf7c0ace741b5580ab69dc2) I had it for years before switching to a BenQ projector—some 1080p projector with 5,000 ANSI lumens. It was the brightest projector I ever owned. That was around 2018–2019. So I spent about 7 years with traditional projectors. And then everything changed. The start of my post actually wasn’t correct, because when I really think about it, my very first projector was a tiny €150 projector from eBay. I think it was HP. It was terrible. I returned it asap and then went with the Epson. In 2019 (or 2020, I’m not sure), I found out about the XGIMI Halo. Around that time, XGIMI released this ad: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UahPcS07sTU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UahPcS07sTU) And yes, it’s an ad—but it summed up perfectly what the Halo changed for me: a smart system, ease of use, and great specs. (That said, the evolution with the Halo+ was needed, and it was the best thing that ever happened to the Halo.) Before the Halo+, I had a PC in my setup, and later I added a Xiaomi TV box. But the PC was still there for games. The Halo+ made all of that unnecessary. [From the epson](https://preview.redd.it/mf6zaritpddg1.jpg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f60b6b189325f56a18a7a14592e552caa156b37) The tricky part is brightness: the Halo+ is about as far away from 5,000 ANSI lumens as we are from the moon. But it only took me a few days to realize that the device itself was way more useful than the 5,000 ANSI lumen projector. I used it a lot more, and I used it better than the BenQ before. [i seemigly did have another compact projector before gimbal projectors.](https://preview.redd.it/zp0picrtqddg1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=be8a770ba7889dfe05f3dfed0f4225b4797cc090) I’m not a “perfect cinema” expert—and neither is my girlfriend. She learned a lot about projectors from knowing me, and she’ll never be able to watch at home on a 65-inch screen again. While people here will tell you about black levels and all that stuff, at some point the ease of use just takes over. These days I’m rocking a XGIMI Horizon 20 Max with all those nice features like lens shift and optical zoom. But I’m not owning it because of that. I don’t really use those features at all, to be honest. I’m now back at around 5,700 ISO lumens, and I couldn’t be happier. For me, there’s no going back. Some brands, like ViewSonic (not sure if that’s a German thing), tried Android/Google TV but failed. BenQ did too. Regular brands are—in my view—only playing catch-up with XGIMI, JMGO, and more recently Dangbei. Since the release of the Aura, we’ve been using an Aura, and since last year we’ve been using an Aura 2. The Horizon is in our bedroom. The only area where I went with another company was travel: JMGO changed the game with the ready-to-take-with-you JMGO N1. It comes in a case, which is super handy—except when it opens by itself. They’ve revised the design by now, so it can’t happen anymore. Still, I think XGIMI saw that concept and thought, “We can do that—but make it even better,” and brought the XGIMI MoGo 4 Laser Outdoor Set to life. It combines a laser projector (there are plenty of discussions about its ups and downs on Facebook, and I don’t want to sugarcoat anything), a tripod, and a screen. For me, that’s the perfect travel bag. I don’t use the MoGo 4 in my normal life, but when we’re on a ski trip, I always take it with me. There is just no other company that thought of a bag that includes everything: the projector and the whole projection setup. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: they should make a 100-inch—or better, 120-inch—version of that screen. Keep the design, just make it bigger. That’s all that’s needed to make it even better. All in all: companies like XGIMI and JMGO shaped the projector market into what it is today. I wouldn’t even count Hisense in the same category, because they’ve been in the TV/projector market for a long time, and they aren’t really like XGIMI, JMGO, and Dangbei (at least in my view). I also tested a Valerion VisionMaster 2 Pro, and that’s a solid device too—and it keeps the spirit of the product experience we’re talking about. I don’t know if this answered your question, but I sure hope so. That’s my projector story. :)
the horizon 20 max is the brightest projector I ever used in my scenarios. I am one to use a light meter, i admit to having a ALR screen by now in combination with the projector. but the picture is lightyears ahead of the jmgo n1s ultimate what projector do you use on a daily basis?
jmgo ultimate’s pricey but you get what you pay for, and its biggest perk over a traditional setup is portability, so really depends on whether you plan to stay in your apartment long term.
From my experience watching various 3D movies on a JMGO n1s ultimate, brightness and color consistency matter a lot for 3D. The triple laser helps keep colors vibrant, so the 3D image feels immersive instead of flat, as long as the source is good.
JMGO N1S Ultimate with a 600 dollar Amazon screen has done wonders for me. 16ft screen iirc. Would have to measure it to be sure.
Don’t think you’ll do much better without fixing the lighting issues. That’s a solid projector
A little but it would take a pretty huge jump because what you have is pretty bright
Hey happy NYE. I have a spot about 8-9 ft from a wall. The wall is white with slight plaster texture. And the room is moderately bright but I can make it dark. That's where I'm looking at movies and YouTube...no screen. Main priority is brighteness and clarity, I don't play video games, and don't particularly care about sound. I do want a Bluetooth enabled model. I currently have the JMGO ultra but it's just a bit dim. Not horrible, but does anyone know of a step up or different model to get for the above features? thanks!
actually last night I watched a movie with attention to turning down ambient light. I got good results with brightness and clarity. and also noticed the projector and GUI are pretty slick. Looks like I just stick with this projector and enjoy!
