So I bought the AAXA M8 laser.. and it's quite nice. I bought it to take with me for use with my laptop and ideally a 40" or so pull up screen (I have one of those pull up screens that are compact (but long)). I liked it so much.. I was thrilled that they just released a UST model. It's only 1080p (like my M8) but that's fine for most use cases. 4K input, scaled down to 1080p looks damn good most of the time. That this is a UST projector with laser for $500 is insane! First one I've seen under $1000. I am hopeful it works as well as the M8 I have. I also tried the "cheap" Kodak very small LED projector. Also 1080p. I was blown away at its overall capability. For a few hundred bucks, in a somewhat dark room it does great. Easily 60" or so image size. Very watchable. You can buy some used USTs for under $1000 that put out 2000+ lumens as well. I am not a fan of buying someone's used stuff when it comes to things like projectors, but many have no problem with that and get great value. I do agree that many cheaper units have lesser quality components.. however so do most of the models on the market that are not from the major brands. It's all a crapshoot. Me personally I want a quality UST with 133" or so screen that folds up from floor.. but also have a 77" or so OLED tv for tv shows, etc. BUT.. as I tend to watch tv in bed before sleep, having TV in room, and projector in main room without a tv is just fine as well. Watch movies there.. with good speaker system.. watch tv shows/etc in bedroom.
I have a Kodak Luma - do not recommend. I love the size and picture, and the price was only a couple hundred but the operating system is crap. Common apps are progressively becoming incompatible. Netflix and Prime Video will no longer function. The device will not play movies from the YouTube app. And there is no way to play videos from the browser app either.
