Only had mine for 3 months and a few dozen hours of usage and have developed several large black spots on the LCD. Interestingly I just updated the firmware a few days ago and you can now set the brightness only up to 5 whereas before I believe it went to 10. I think this projector has issues with burning the LCD.

I currently have a Nexigo PJ40 and honestly it’s fine. bright enough to kinda see during the day and of course great at night. But the LCD screen has burned after just 8 weeks. Amazon refunded in full without even requiring a return. I just want a good all around projector for a non light controlled living room. I would say given the room the only spec that matters is brightness. Beyond that I don’t care. I’m not a projector snob or audiophile etc. Just a bang for your buck “that’ll do” recommendation. (daytime brightness in pic is fine for me. like I said not picky)

Even living with a basic nexigo pj40 for a few months i know my current upgrade will have to include a projector. When it comes to films, it changes the whole experience, makes it special again. I’ll be keeping the old TV on one side of the living room for the kids and gaming but I’ve set aside the biggest wall for projected UST image and had all the surround sound cables chased into the walls accordingly.

The passable projectors start at around $250, for a Nexigo PJ40. 700 lumens isn't super hot but it's quite usable in a dark room. Hell, I used to have an Epson 16:9 projector in my home theater that did 700 lumens years and years ago and it was plenty good looking in a darkened room. But also /r/budgetprojectors

I'm immediately going to be that guy and say you meant "put the onus on" the manufacturers rather than the impetus. ;) Noteworthy to me is that the Nexigo had the top score for black level and shadow detail, a hugely important criterion for movie viewing in a light controlled room. Epson also seems to have made some questionable choices there, indeed. My LS800 looks pretty good when dialed in (but then again, Epson also fucked up by removing most of the calibration options, an inexplicable choice to this day and if anyone at Epson ever reads this, consider yourself to be staring at two middle fingers raised in your general direction for that). In fact, since I got my HTPC set up with madVR filters and let that do the dynamic HDR instead it became even better. Also: all the projectors are listed as 3840x2160 native, which is pretty wrong across the board.

720p will leave the image a little softer but it will still look much more impressive at larger sizes. But the cheap Chinese garbage projectors aren't that great. I think semi-passable starts at something like a Nexigo PJ40 gen 3 but check with /r/budgetprojectors

I just returned the nexigo pj40 gen 3 because of all the complaints I read about screen burn and blown fuses, etc. I bought this not knowing those issues were due to the lcd screen rather than that specific make and model, meaning this might also be prone to similar issues. That said, this screen is a little less bright, has a bigger frame, seems to have a bigger and better fan, which seems to keep it's temp in check. My x9 does not get anywhere near as hot as the nexigo did, at least not when I felt the air coming from the exhaust port last night. The nexigo was noticeably hot just standing near the exhaust, and this one was barely warm with my hand up to it. Thinking all that could help with the issues people experienced with the nexigo. Based on that, I'll roll the dice and will report back if it explodes lol. For anyone interested in performance, I was blown away by the nexigo for the price, but it struggled with blending certain colors and had some wonky artifacts at times. It was marginally brighter than the x9, only really noticeable side-by-side, and only in certain scenes or with cetain colors. The x9 is plenty bright for my needs. I have it set up in a dark basement currently, but really intend to use it outdoors for camping and in the backyard and in parks and stuff. The nexigo was measured at about 700 ansi on a YouTube video I saw, and I would guess the x9 is maybe 675 based on that. Despite a negligible drop in brightness, the x9 seems to handle colors much better and looks a bit better, in my opinion. I won't use the onboard speakers on this because I've got it hooked up to 2 jbl 320s, but they actually sound great. I was impressed. I think the nexigo speakers were slightly louder, but they sounded like ass. These are richer and fuller and more balanced with pretty good mids, compared to the tinny and abrasive nexigo speakers. The operating system sucks, you'll want a fire stick or something. The auto focus and keystone is great. The nexigo did not have that. Overall I would recommend it, but go in knowing that you may encounter the issues others mentioned here because of the LCD. I am new to projectors so I'm just gonna rock it and if it blows up I'll get a nice laser 4k one or something if I'm still loving the projector life at that point.

I have a NexiGo PJ40 Gen 3 that I like well enough for its price. Currently priced at $230 after applying a $40 coupon. I bought mine just under 9 months ago (I think right around when the Gen 3 came out) for $240. I think it was a fair price for it. I have it positioned about three feet behind my head and don't really find it noisy at all. I can hear the fan if nothing's playing, but it's not annoying. 10-level fan that I've kept on 6 (lower fan levels will of course reduce brightness). On 1, I really can't hear it at all, and it's still bright enough. Not sure why I settled on 6; I think partly just that I was afraid that keeping the fan at super low speeds might affect life, and 6 wasn't high enough to be annoying. https://www.amazon.com/NexiGo-PJ40-Gen-Calibrated-Compatible/dp/B0CRKLJ8HC The iSinbox one you linked I'd be a little wary of at least right now, partly because it's only been on Amazon for a month and partly because of its 28 reviews, only 5 are not "Vine review of free product" ones. Also, $260 but with a $105 coupon on it, I don't generally believe to be a real price. More likely just an inflated price so that offering a deep discount coupon makes it seem like a steal. But you know what? It might actually be a steal. I guess worst case, you end up driving it over to UPS to ship it back for a refund, as long as it fails in time. (Luckily, due to the holiday season, return windows are extended until the end of January, giving you a lot more time to see if it's a keeper.)

> I don’t know why I thought these Airplay style features would just be embedded I think the *correct* way to word what I was getting at is probably that while many projectors might actually support AirPlay, many (most?) don't support AirPlay 2, which is necessary in order for most streaming apps to allow video. Video can absolutely be transferred and viewed over older AirPlay (non-subscription YouTube works just great streaming from my phone directly to my projector's built-in mirroring solution), but the subscription streaming providers block it from working with their stuff over older AirPlay, apparently for anti-piracy reasons. I'm assuming that the paid YouTube TV stuff probably also doesn't work over older AirPlay, but I have no way to test it. > What projector do you recommend overall? Personally, I'm really happy with my current projector, a [NexiGo PJ40 Gen 3](https://www.amazon.com/NexiGo-PJ40-Gen-Calibrated-Compatible/dp/B0CRKLJ8HC), which you can pick up on Amazon right now for $240 ($280 minus a $40 coupon). Is it the best projector out there? Definitely not, but it suits my needs and budget. I think the picture is great plus it's bright enough to work well even in the daytime with blinds drawn, and some (but not excessive) lighting on in the room. The built-in speakers are also perfectly fine for some things, such as typical TV shows, but for movie watching, I feel using them detracts from the enjoyment, so I have mine hooked up to external speakers. If you don't care about buying new with warranty, u/PlayStationPepe always comes up with great suggestions for used options, where of course your dollar can buy you a lot better quality than shopping the new market. If you prefer buying new and can stretch your budget over that $200 mark, then the PJ40 is something I'm happy with and would recommend. If you do look at the PJ40, don't get confused by the "Netflix-Licensed" option on the same page. That's for a completely different model that has Smart TV support built-in, and that really should be on its own separate product listing page. If you get an external streaming box like the $20 onn GTV 4K, you'll be set (and probably better off), no matter what projector you end up getting.

yes i'm quite satisfied. i wanted to buy for the same reason as you 70% gaming, 30% streaming. before buying acer i have tried the following: \* benq th585p: low input lag is really good, and the viewing quality, but it was causing too much heat and fan noise, plus it was just hd \* Viewsonic PX701-4K: it was good, but the rainbow effect was too much, it was definitely too saturated colors therefore i returned it \* Aurzen boom 3: it was great overall, but it could not produce more than 30hz therefore it was causing lag, \* NexiGo PJ40 (Gen 3): was the best for price / performance. but you had to position this projector 15 - 20 cm above your head to have the best viewing and low input lag. plus when its lamp expires you could not replace it. so at the end i've ended up buying acer. i hope these infos could help you. i am not sure about epson, but i guess they usually come either with too much fan noise or having only one hdmi input. when it's so, you should constantly unplug and plug the streaming stick.

Nexigo makes some high end projectors as well and do have good firmware updates. The PJ40 is a single LCD projector but it beats lots of lifestyle projectors double or triple it's price in certain areas. Low latency and good contrast. At the budget you have though you should think about what's important to you. Personally gray blacks and low contrast bother me. I do all of my watching in a dark room so I prioritize picture quality over brightness. I dont mind 1080p at all and would pick something with better color, black floor and contrast over something 4k.

Nexigo pj40 gen 3 or used 1080p home theatre projectors. You don't need 4k for a good experience. I would argue black level and contrast are more important. Low latency if you want to game. Use external device like firestick, android box, PC or consoles for smart features

So, both projectors have 2 completely different uses, but one is still superior imo and here's why. 1: the pj40 is VERY limited on brightness. Even in a dim room, 700 lumens is simply not a lot of light, and no matter how you cut it, you need light to create a watchable and enjoyable image. 2: the pj40 is lacking in terms of simple flexibility options, such as optical lens shift which makes placement very easy. 3: the Epson, side by side, looks like a normal TV vs a project somebody built for a school project. The picture is leagues above in nearly all aspects. Don't look into contrast and think " it's better because blacks" were not talking OLED vs tn. often times the actual output of the projector and it's specs aren't commensurate. Best examples can be seen in the few most recent "the hookup" videos. A high contrast projector with low brightness just turns into a washed out mess in most lighting conditions even with the best screens. 4: I am completely unworried about lamp lifetime with these prices. Remember that the spec for the Epson is quoted to 75% or 50% brightness, both of which would still leave you over double the light output ability of the pj40 brand new out of the box. These projectors are meant to be used and abused, and for that purpose, the Epson is also the best built of the 2 by a far margin. I'm more confident in the Epson actually making it to 12k+ hours vs the pj40 which has a plentiful field of posts here on Reddit of dead, dying, or burned units. My Epson has been living in a go bag between meetings and shows for over 2 years and has spent most of its time being banged around, or blasting full brightness onto large hall screens with minimal care or setup. 5: the Epson can be used in full daylight indoors. The pj40 would be unwatchable in this condition. This alone makes the Epson more usable as it's able to provide the big picture, not only in a pitch black room. Tldr, the Epson is better because of its versatility and attention to build. It's not a 1 trick pony, or a pitch black bedroom projector. It's a proper, everyday usable projector at a damn low price for the performance. Biggest con? 210w needed. Want to use with a battery bank? Gonna need a big one.

If you go up to the $200 price bracket, you can get the even better Nexigo PJ40, which beats the Groview pretty handily (as The Hook Up shows in other videos). I'm able to use it with some (but not all) of my garage lights on, so it doesn't need as much darkness. It's still only ~700 ANSI compared to the Groviews ~500, so nothing in comparison to a BenQ (~3000 ANSI), but I think it's a great middle of the road projector for building incrementally if you're not ready to drop $800+. Nexigo also happens to be a more serious projector manufacturer as well, with their 4k laser Aurora at $2500.

I've owned a pj40. As far as this style of projector (cheap Chinese single LCD projectors) it's not the worst. It's fairly bright with an actual measured brightness of around ansi 450 lumens (I measured two units and both were under 500 lumens) and ok color recreation. But it is not a quality projector. Anything from Epson will be better. But it's one of the better "e-waste" units.

I feel validated that the judges gave the Nexigo a basically failing grade for 24p content. I bought that projector to watch movies in my blacked out theater and while the black levels are amazing, it can't reliablely play 24p content and it's a deal breaker. Nexigo says it's a known issue. Anyone want to buy a Nexigo so I can upgrade to the Highsense?

Not sure if it helps or makes your comparison harder, but the Nexigo does drop to around $1399-1499 on sale. Maybe even the Valerion Plus or Plus 2 should merit consideration at that price point.
