I’ve just changed from an optoma hd42 to a Hisense c2ultra The difference is night and day
The HD142X is a decent entry level home theater projector. It's not a smart projector or anything like that, it's just a basic projector. Weak audio, no HDMI-ARC built in. 1080p only. But, it's decently bright and uses a reliable DLP chip inside of it. In good condition, it should last many more years. As is the case with all used projectors, it could be showing signs of its age. This can be very difficult to ascertain ahead of time. You want to either buy with a warranty, or test it before you buy it. Buying on blind faith that it is working well is bad practice.
Thanks! It’s an Optoma HD142X, got it for 120€ which is was an absolute steal i think EDIT: the lamp has been running for 1500h which is great! 1200h were made in eco mode lol so 300h in bright mode which is fantastic.
get a decent used one for 150-200$, if it’s outside your range, then saving up for it is well worth it. you will get an image that’s leagues above and it will for live way longer depending on the lamp hours,

I have bought multiple, the current ultra short throw epson 695wi I paid 90 bucks. I also have an optoma hd142x I paid 100 for, and an Optoma TW1692 I paid 95 for.
Skip the PJ40. Pickup the BenQ W1080 or the Optoma HD142X
With a distance of 8ft the image size would be around 133” diagonal. The Optoma HD142X would be a better unit since it’s a standard throw unit. 68” - 75” at 8ft For the BenQ W1070 at 8ft will give you a 74”-96” image size. The only solution for a reduce image size on the W1080ST would be to physically move the unit closer.
With the high lamp hours this is fine. The Optoma HD142X has a lamp rating of 5,000 hours / 8,000 hours (Eco)
It’s sealed but not fully sealed if that makes sense. No air filter is used for this unit.
Save up a little more and get the Optoma HD143X or look for other models in that seriesHD142X or HD141X. **Do not purchase a Projector that has pre-existing issues.**
Hi op, this looks great! You should share this photo on the subreddit so others can see it as well. Don’t forget to tag me :) For the rainbow effect you could these settings: • Lower the BrilliantColor value. Try setting it to 1 or 2, or even turning it off if possible. A lower value results in more "pure" colors and often reduces the flickering sensation of the RBE. (Found in Image > Advanced) —— The speed of the color wheel and the brightness of the flashes impact how your eyes perceive the rainbows. • **Action:** Go to Options > Lamp Settings > Lamp Mode. • **Recommendation:** Switch to Eco mode. Reducing the overall light output makes the sequential color flashes less harsh against dark backgrounds, which is where rainbows are usually most visible. —— **Select the Right Display Mode** Some modes are "hotter" and use more aggressive processing which can trigger RFE. • **Action:** Go to Image > Display Mode. • **Recommendation:** Use Cinema or Reference. These modes prioritize color accuracy and usually result in a more stable image compared to "Vivid" or "Bright" modes. —— Rainbows are most visible in high-contrast scenes (e.g., a white candle in a dark room). • **Action:** In the Image menu, ensure your Brightness and Contrast are not cranked to extremes. • **Advanced Tip:** If you are in a dark room, lowering the contrast slightly can soften the "edge" where rainbows typically appear. —— Outside of the software settings, there are two physical things you can do: • **Ambient Light:** Adding a very dim "bias light" (like a low-power LED strip behind the screen or a small lamp in the back of the room) reduces the strain on your eyes and makes the RFE less jarring. • **Eye Movement:** Try to avoid darting your eyes quickly across the screen. RBE is most commonly triggered by rapid eye movement. Let me know if this helps!
I have an [Optoma HD142X](https://a.co/d/6NN4QNK) I don’t use. It’s been great for me and would be better than anything you will find at $300. Box, mount and accessories. Feel free to DM
You cant know something you never had basically. But that projector, once it starts to get burn in, thats it... Ewaste. A proper projector (can find on ebay even as low as 300e) will have a bulb which is replaceable and last about 10k hours (depends on system) and the bulbs at least for me cost only 80euro. Colorwheels cost 5euro a pop. All very easy diy change out. My projector is now iirc 15years old. 1080p60hz, optoma, long throw, its on very often just like tv, i changed maybe 3 bulbs so far... Has gaming settings reduce latency etc. great colors and contrast. Never used a screen even for it. Any plain color wall worked better than any of the budget screens. Have repainted wall matt white now and it works very well instead of those budget screens.
With Blackfriday looming im trying to make a similar decision. Again like you i have a dedicated theatre room with full control over light. I currently have an old 1080p Optama projector with a fixed 100" screen. I need to look at replace the projector but with mini-led 100" tvs dropping drastically im not sure which route to take. main use is movies as I have a sepwrat3 family room with an LG c3 65".
