Quiet humidifiers exist, but most of the stuff on shelves is built to be disposable. The fan in cool‑mist units is the main noise source, and warm‑mist units trade that for a heating element humming away. Still quieter, just a different kind of noise. The part that actually matters for holding a steady humidity is the sensor. The cheap built‑in ones drift fast, then the thing short cycles itself to death. An external capacitive sensor does a lot better, but most manufacturers skip it to save a dollar. The tank and body should be thick ABS or polypropylene. The clear plastic stuff cracks once you put it through a few heating cycles. If you go warm mist, look for a stainless steel boil chamber. Aluminum pits, scales up, and turns into a mess after a season or two. Ultrasonic units are fine as long as the ceramic disc is replaceable. The sealed ones die the moment that disc wears out. Mechanical relays last longer than the tiny solid state boards that fry when the heater kicks on a few thousand times. Some of the older Vicks warm mist units got these details right, mostly because they weren’t trying to be “smart”. Levoit’s Classic line isn’t perfect, but at least they don’t fall apart instantly. Skip anything with a touchscreen. Those panels cook themselves from the steam path and the whole thing becomes landfill in a year.

r/NewParentsDry air is causing baby nosebleeds. Has anyone tried a baby-safe humidifier that actually works?

You should use a cool mist humidifier for baby. We have a levoit and like to a lot. It has an auto shut off feature which is nice.  If the air is too dry in the whole house you may want to consider a whole home humidifier

You should use a cool mist humidifier. We have a Levoit that works well. But we use it in addition to our whole house humidifier we recently had installed. The whole home humidifier was an investment but worth it

Dealing with a couple dozen in-case humidifiers vs. one room humidifier is bonkers. OP, I'd go one something like Wirecutter and pick a highly-rated model with the features you want. Be aware that there are two types—evaporative and ultrasonic. Both have their ups and downs. Ultrasonic is silent and doesn't require replacing filters, but they release whatever is in the water into the air. That means mineral dust and any bacteria growing in the water. If you go this route, make sure to use only distilled water and thoroughly clean the unit regularly. Evaporative humidifiers on the other hand don't release anything into the air, but you need to replace the filters regularly and they produce some fan noise (not great if you're recording). And even though they don't release stuff into the air, they absolutely still will grow bacteria inside, so you still need to clean them regularly. Personally I use a Levoit ultrasonic unit running with distilled water. It's great and very low maintenance, I just clean it once a week which is much less effort than dealing with a bunch of in-case humidifiers like I used to. And because the humidity in the room is pretty much 45-50% all year round, my guitars almost never need adjustment. Once they're set up, they play great for years with no tweaking required.

r/BuyItForLifeBest humidifier? Enough for a regular size bedroom.

it’s okay! it works and does help with humidity but i wish it had a digital humidistat to turn it self off. the unit is also fairly large and i wish it was smaller. I also wish the tank was bigger as it’s kind of annoying to flip the filter and refill it everyday. I probably could do it every other day. I will say that the filter stays relatively clean after using the deminirlization tablets and aftermarket filter from amazon. Also being able to throw like most parts in the dishwasher is awesome for cleaning . comparing this to a previous levoit ultrasonic and i like that it’s way more healthy. No mold in tricky spots (yet anyway) and i feel like i can do an easier job of keeping it clean for my son. I do change the wick every 30 days as well .

They’re also the healthiest, if you have breathing problems or allergies that get worse when we get high levels of small particulate (PM 2.5 ) pollution in the summer. I bought a big Levoit ultrasonic humidifier last winter and my air purifier, which gives exact PM 2.5 levels, read >300, which is crazy high. It wasn’t just the water vapour because even 2 rooms away it was still >100. My warm steam humidifier doesn’t raise the particulate levels at all and doesn’t leave a film of white dust over everything either. It’s the best!

I would stay clear from Levoit or any other ultrasonic humidifier. I had it, and it covers all pictures in the room with white film, because of the minerals that gets to air. And google or ask AI about health risks of ultrasonic vs evaporative humidifiers... I replaced my Levoit with Smartmi evaporative humidifier 3 and can't be happier. Works in HA too.

I use a PUR water filter thing to filter the water. My ultrasound humidifier is a Levoit. I also have a Superior6000s, and it does take some patience to get it to work how I wanted. But its not bad. I've only had it a week.

TIL you definitely shouldn't use tap water in ultrasonic humidifiers because it can create "white dust" which is the metals and particles in your tap water aerosolized and can cause lung irritation or illness down the line, especially effecting infants, elderly, etc. I knew distilled water was recommended but I didn't think it was mandatory for health reasons. You're also supposed to clean it every 3 days, who has time for that! I had my levoit humidifier on everyday next to my bed at the advice of my ENT for dry nasal pasages (I also use saline spray) and I had it on the entire time my LO was sleeping in the bassinet next to me, from weeks 0-11 of his life. Now I feel like an awful mum and that I could have hurt his developing lungs! Not to mention I've been breathing it in for the last 3 years! Ugh. Every decision as a parent could be harmful and you just don't know it. Am I the only one who didn't know that humidifiers did this?? Everyone can't be cleaning theirs diligently every 3 days AND lugging gallons of distilled water home... Edit: kind of wild, even the Frida Baby humidifier is ultra sonic and on the pictures for the advertising of the product it literally says "tap water friendly tank fills from the top" ....but you aren't supposed to use tap water with ultrasonic as we've now learned! Marketing man.

I change the filter in the humidifier whenever it changes color and the water hardness in my area, or close to it (Loudoun county VA) is Fairfax VA and it's labeled as Hard on the online databases. Safe to say I have unplugged my humidifier for the time being and will look into alternatives.

I've researched this extensively and have a couple of different recommendations based on how high maintenance you want to get. If you want ultrasonic/misting humidifiers where you can see the mist coming out, you should use distilled water so it's not launching mineral deposits and contaminants into the air. My levoit works well and is easy to clean. If you want something you can just run purified/filtered or tap water into, you can get an evaporative humidifier. I have a Sharkzilla that works well and also a cheap one from Walgreens that works great. If you want to check how well they're working, you can get a hygrometer. I keep two in my place in different rooms. All the above I mentioned work really well. I'd clean with vinegar once a week and it's good to dry out the filter and swap with a different one once the water runs out. That will help with bacteria/mold.

r/BuyItForLifedo all humidifiers suck?? need recs for one that’ll actually survive the winter

We have had the same Levoit for about 4 years now, and run it every day once we start using heat in the house. We like it because all the pieces that touch water come apart and can be cleaned, which we do about once a month. We also bought a distiller, which helps keep the mineral buildup down.
