In 2011, I picked up a pair of Ultimate Ears 600vi. I was only 14 at the time. Like many of you, I dug deeper into the rabbit hole. 15 years later, more than $5000 spent on just IEMs, another $1000 on equipment. One day, something in me snapped. I sold all my prized IEMs, the Annihilators, Andromeda 2020s, U12ts. I didn't even need the money. I just had too many that I was holding on to because of how "great" they were on paper-- yet the hunt for something better never ended. It all changed when I was given the opportunity to try the HiFiMan Edition XS, priced at $300. Blind test. I had no idea what openbacks or HiFiMan even was. I put my favorite song on, skeptical at first, and I started laughing out loud. This random, piece of shit plasticky $300 headphone just smashed all my multi-kilobucks IEMs out of the water. Of course, after 15 years in the game, I know that we measure performance quantitatively in obsessive charts, graphs and FR measurements. Yet, in that moment, for the first time in my life I let myself value the equipment based off how much I enjoyed listening to my music rather than arbitrary metrics such as treble or bass quantity, soundstage etc etc I know high end IEMs have insane sonic performance, but when you listen to the music instead of listening to the IEM, suddenly the only thing that matters is the music itself and nothing else. I picked up the Edition XS that very same day. Sold all my IEMs in the proceeding weeks and kept only my cheapest pair: the Final Audio E1000 that's plugged into my Macbook right now as I type this in a cafe. Somehow I no longer see headphones/earphones for the quantitative performance and public opinion they receive; only how much joy it brings to my music. The UE600vi that I bought years ago broke many years ago, and I remember feeling absolutely shattered at 15 because they were no longer available for purchase in my area. To my surprise, I see that the very same IEM that first sent me into a 15 year long addiction is back and available for sale, and for only $23. You bet my ass, like the crackhead we all are, I bought one immediately just so I can relive the euphoria I experienced in my teens. Before the UE600vi has even arrived, I just want to quickly check in with those around. I've come across other bullet style IEMs like the Final Audio F7200, HiFiMan RE800 Gold that have caught my attention because right now the obsession that I once thought I defeated has creeped its way back in. I know they're older models, but they're quite cheap now vs when they were first released. Are there any other recommendations that I should look at? Budget up to $150. Preferably BA drivers, or brightly tuned DDs. Thanks!
