I WHOLE HEARTEDLY AGREE WITH YOUR POINTS: https://preview.redd.it/vwxf7i53neye1.jpeg?width=2377&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9aafdf70e38f01e9e6e88692e4c7f79caca103d8 This is MY collection...and I'm very early in the journey. I don't have the budget, knowledge or experience to blind buy a 500USD+ set of in ears that may or may not fit my ears or my preferences. While my journey doesn't completely fit OP's blueprint...I have/had the same thought process regarding purchasing IEMs. Not pictured are the Moondrop Chu 2 and 7Hz Sonus. I started with the Chu 2, 7Hz Zero 2 and Kiwi Ears Cadenza. From listening, watching and reading reviews...I was able to learn about all the terms, labels, and vocabulary to describe what I like or don't like. I threw money at the Wyvern Abyss...I mean...LOOK AT THEM😂. The Kz Castor Bass was a curiosity buy...want to hear if a set touting bass response was really that bassy. My next steps were the NiceHCK F1 Pros, Kiwi Ears Canta and the 7Hz Sonus. The F1 Pros and the Sonu were on sale at the time of purchase...good value and able to narrow things down more for myself. I knew I liked the planar sound...I have a set of open ear planar cans. The F1s felt disappointing (until I tip rolled) The Sonus was about much for my taste (in the mids) The Cantas were quite nice for me. By this point...I had a good grasp of what I was looking for and the direction (s) I want to go in. AFUL Performer 5+2 is currently my go-to...for all around listening. Sourced from R2R DAC lined out into a desktop tube amp. It's like a warm blanket on crisp bright and snowy winter day. I picked up the Hexa because I wanted to hear the hype...and yes...they definitely fulfill the hype and then some. I've EQed my IEMs... especially the planar. They can mimic the sound...but it's only a part of the equation. I now rotate through 3-4 sets at my desktop listening station. The cheapo ones all have 3.5mm out for around the house or for bed. If they break...ill decide if I want to replace. Tip rolling is a journey of itself. Some tips can dramatically change an IEM and rescue it from the bottom of the pile. My Planars now sport foam tips...easing off the treble was huge. Anyway...long post...if you got this far thanks for sticking with my diarrhea of words. TLDR: I agree with the OP
Kiwi Ears Canta (around 100usd) Punch Audio Martilo (300ish usd) AFUL P5+2...have a mini planar in there...(a little over 200usd) Simgot ET142 .... planar with pzt driver (around 200) I have all those...and I love em. That's my regular rotation
If you’re looking for contrast, get the Explorer. Its warm signature is quite unique. Certainly different than the Defiant. You can’t go brighter with something like a Kiwi Ears Canta. Dual planar and plays well with EQ. OR…go full bass head (within the Defiant price range) with the Legato. You can also jump up slightly for 7Hz Diablo as well. Bottom line is that you have a wealth of options. Don’t understand why you’d dip back down to the Cadenza.
Keep the APP2 for convenience and ANC. They are really good for a set of TWS. For gaming...find a set that's leans a little bright. You'll want to find a set that is known to have good imaging. Not to say budget sets are not good...but best value to performance for IEMs (imo) is about 100-300 USD range. Open back headphones are generally best for gaming...but dependent on your surroundings (obviously😅) If I'm using IEMs to game...I use Kiwi Ears Canta. These have the "best" soundstage amongst my collection (From...Martilo, Performer 5+2 all the way down to 7Hz Zero 2 and Kiwi Ears Cadenza)
I agree. Ive tried s08 and aether and some other with microplanars like simgot ew300 or kiwi ears canta and i have returned them all. But the PRX was a very nice surprise. Just a little bit bright in the upper frequencies but it smooths over time. I put a cotton mesh infront of the noozle filter and tames the upper treble a bit. No doubt its a better tuning than aether or s08 which sounds muddy in comparison in the mid lows
Kiwi Ears Canta - I like it alot since there is a focus on vocals. It's even advertised as "vocal forward". The treble is quite strong. I use foam tips and am not treble sensitive so that isn't a problem for me. They are great for listening to details. They coast under 100 USD and have a quite unique driver config with 1DD +2 Planar.
Kiwi Ears Canta with Fiio JM21.
So I just got the MEST MK2s last week, and they have become my favorite musical set almost instantly. It’s just so pleasing and unique it’s hard to describe. I have also messed with Letshuoer S08s, Simgot SM4, Ziigaat Odyssey, Kiwi Ears Canta (least favorite so far), Letshuoer DX4. Tea Pros are where it’s at for value/performance for me. Odyssey might be better value overall but its lack of stage/space makes me appreciate the MEST/Tea Pro more.
(noble iems arent good) and kiwi ears is insane value their wooden ciems are the best looking iems out there though
Moondrop kato, i had it, its V shape sound with a great bass sound. Kiwi, and KZ iems are great too However there’s many options at this price range,
I've had multiple iems, but the one I've stuck to for a while now is the kiwi ears. They have a really nice eq and they are decently cheap, I actually bought my second pair recently after using my first pair for over 2 years. I put the moondrop spring tips on them and they are the comfiest ear buds i have ever used. I use those tips on all my earbuds now they are so good.
Sound is subjective. What sounds good for me probably wont sound good to you. Start cheap, try TRN, they make the best cheap iems hands down. I tried KZ, kiwi ears, letshuoer and my TRN VX pro plus are my daily drivers. I have more expensive iems but they are catching dust because I absolutely dont like the sound they provide. Also my biggest disappointment spending 200-400 bucks and then not having a good soundstage or clarity. Meanwhile, this $40 chinese iem, provides me with 3D audio, I can feel the distance of the instruments. Also for gaming, forget about it, ppl say im cheating all the time, mind you, im just hearing the enemy. And the clarity and details. Btw, im going to add a video link of ppl trying out random iems without knowing price point and namebrand and giving their opinion which one to them sounds better. https://youtu.be/eJGwS_I8m4E?si=b27nMz_FSYOK4dEF
im on kiwi ears, no waifu 💀
