The bass on them doesn’t hit quite as hard as it does on the Quartet ... They were my second set after the Cadenza when I realized I wanted more bass than what the Cadenza had."

"I tried ke4 this week and its also really good with more warmness. ... in that price range the ke4 will definitely be more suitable, the vocals are warm, they are an excellent all arounder."

It has a beautiful, lush sparkle which can be observed in tracks like Caravan by John Wasson, The Spirit of Radio by Rush and Alright by Kendrick Lamar; where the cymbals had such a gorgeous way of presenting themselves that I was finding myself grooving hard. ... Detail retrieval on the KE4 gets even better when one observes how well it handles busy or element heavy tracks where it helps you observe and revel everything without letting one tumble over the another ... The KE4, as a welcome change, lets the highs soar with some restraint as in to not make the presentation shouty- with this, the whole listening experience sounds cohesive ... The KE4 and the DaVinci should be good for the sound signature you're after. The Ziigat Odyssey have a V-shaped tuning, which is not really neutral, but if you're looking for a V-shaped IEM those are the ones to beat right now apparently. If you can pony up $50-$100 more I can personally recommend the Moondrop Dusk, the default DSP tuning aims for the same meta tuning the KE4 and the DaVinci aim for, which is a mostly "neutral" sound signature with a slight bass boost.

What makes you think that the KE4 is overhyped/overpriced? Just curious since I could get one for 185€ which seems like a good deal. Most reviewers mentioned that its a decent option if you want to get the meta tuning for a bit cheaper. From what I understood the general consensus seems to be that its a solid iem for the price, but not a massive gamechanger

I think your preferences would be far better served by something like the KiwiEars KE4, or the also new Ziigaat Odyssey. As your preference with Fan3 would indicate you like that later JM1 style upper mids Pina Gain. An out of left field alternative would be the AFUL Performer 5. Or possibly the Performer 5+2 (or Performer 7 as some people call it). Personally the Performer 5 is a little brighter, which leans more towards the Fan3, but the 5+2 has a little more clinical detail up top. And way out in super right field, is the KiwiEars Airoso, it might be a little too U shaped for proper monitor use. But it is very clean in the upper mids and treble, and has excellent detail. There really isnt anything i have found that the Airoso cant play well. And for the current sub-$100 price, it punches WAY above its price target. Not that you came here looking for advice, buuuuttt...its interesting to get some alternative perspectives. https://audioamigo.squig.link/?share=Ziigaat_Lush,Ziigaat_Cinno,Ziigaat_Odyssey,Penon_Fan_3_BC_Off,Kiwi_Ears_KE4,AFUL_Performer_5,Kiwi_Ears_Airioso

The pilgrims are good but they lack bass even compared to the hexas, so I wouldn't go that way, the thing with the hexas is that their mids and highs are basically tuned to the meta target, with less bass, so if you want a hexa with more bass then a meta tuned iem would be perfect for you, the kiwiears ke4 is the cheapest but in your price range you can also get the dunu da Vinci or the moondrop dusk.

I recently got the KE4 after testing 6 options at an audio shop, alas the only ones I caught the names of were the KE4 (which I bought) and the Quintet also from Kiwi Ears. The KE4 are pretty amazing with impressive clarity and balanced profile but enough “oomph” that the bass isn’t too muted. My past experience comes from Sennheiser HD598, B&O H9i, AirPods Pro, and a few other headsets and honestly it beats them all, with the exception of the sound stage on the HD598 (which is unfair since those are open-back headphones) Also the KE4 are currently on sale so there’s that. Looking to see what folk comment on the other IEMs you mentioned since honestly I didn’t do much research and wasn’t able to test the Moondrops I would otherwise have compared to.

This, for me, was a spectacular find on the used market where I am based at, as I was able to scoop this unit up with a custom 3d printed eartip case and a pair of CP155+ for roughly 50% of the retail price of this wonderful unit. I had low hopes from Kiwi Ears and this would have been my last shot, as my experience with Quartet was meh to say the least, and I had a tumultuous relationship with the Quintet as it had fatigued my ears like anything. This was a personal hail mary, and I am going to say that this is the best Kiwi Ears IEM I have owned till date. https://preview.redd.it/rj9mj5rzolqe1.jpg?width=5164&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4120845d6d61199a76cd561c8c356d6dcd8d93dc Unboxing was a nice experience- none of that cringe waifu branding which really should be done with in all honesty; image of the product and specifications on the cover, followed by unboxing and the IEMs nestled in it, and further leads to the usual kiwi ears branded carry case (Kiwi Ears, in all honesty it is high time you invested in a better, bigger case). They also decided to supply their own Flex line-up of eartips, and their usual cable which is nothing to write home about. Ample, that is all but a better cable and maybe a redesigned thicker cable could be some added welcomed toppings. This, after the Cadenza, has to be their best fitting iem to me. Despite being fairly large, the KE4 fits my ears so comfortably I can have them on for hours, although I use the Tripowin Zonie instead of the stock cable. Using the Spinfit CP100 tips also helps me bring out the best sound out possible through this while my ears continue to enjoy this set. https://preview.redd.it/e89vjur1plqe1.jpg?width=6000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60dd1505f3cc4ecb37896c250c759f2b5ab9435d **Lows:** Now, the main part that is the sound and this is where the KE4 takes centre stage. You are first greeted with the lows thick enough to hang like Greek Yoghurt. Rotating tracks like Pneuma by Tool, Limelight by Rush, Message in a Bottle by the Police helps me appreciate the weight of the bass that the KE4 tends to carry- drums sound nothing short of magnificent although without EQ, it may sound a bit too bleeding into the midrange as the sub-bass tuning on the KE4 consistently keeps this phenomenon across the board. But people who tend to enjoy the healthy, meaty lows that have the potential to put the fun in funeral their listening sessions will definitely appreciate this IEM. At times, one might find the details across the lows a tad too missing but this by no means is a slouch in terms of that- it might seem a bit lacking but it does make up quite a fair bit. **Mids:** the KE4 through its rotation through tracks like All by Myself by Celine Dion, Nessun Dorma by Pavarotti, and When We Were Young by Adele- except for female vocals running out of air across certain points of their respective tracks, and the male vocals scramming across for some weight, the KE4 midrange hits the right notes very well and with a lot of consistency. It is blessed with commendable imaging while not losing too much on details. I would have enjoyed a slightly wider soundstage given how mildly overwhelming the imaging could get, but I am not going to deduct points for this. It does not sound claustrophobic by any means but could have used a little space to let the imaging shine through bright. **Highs:** Lastly, I seriously appreciated how well reined the KE4 is. It has a beautiful, lush sparkle which can be observed in tracks like Caravan by John Wasson, The Spirit of Radio by Rush and Alright by Kendrick Lamar; where the cymbals had such a gorgeous way of presenting themselves that I was finding myself grooving hard. Except for the timbre getting ever so slightly metallic, I have no complaints with how the highs are. Detail retrieval on the KE4 gets even better when one observes how well it handles busy or element heavy tracks where it helps you observe and revel everything without letting one tumble over the another, and you might as well forget the lack of a slightly wider stage because of how well the extension is on this set. Which was my major qualm with the predecessor of this IEM in the same price range, ie, the Quintet where the highs kept on changing colours to the extent where I just concluded that it was inconsistently wonky. The KE4, as a welcome change, lets the highs soar with some restraint as in to not make the presentation shouty- with this, the whole listening experience sounds cohesive, with the only qualms being a slightly narrower stage than preferred, the miss of a faint air across the vocals, and a tad touch down on the sub-bass to midrange transition. And yes, this set is not sibilant. https://preview.redd.it/x936o304plqe1.jpg?width=6000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4ef06cba137d68e3a0db8803fcec5eef39a5a0a1 **Concluding notes:** The Kiwi Ears KE4 were a blessing in disguise to me, after I had sold off my Pula PA02 and the Ikko OH10 with a heavy heart and even though the Performer 5 from Aful had ticked off a lot of boxes for me, I wanted a bit more life on the lows, and a bit of more sparkle across the highs and the Kiwi Ears KE just get it so damn right, it is here to stay in my stable. Versus the likes of the Simgot Supermix 4, the Kiwi Ears KE4 totally make the price bump worth it. I severely disliked the wonkiness in the highs of the Supermix 4 and that is part of the reason why I bought the Pula PA02 instead which was a terrific offering from a maker that had just recently started. When I glance over my notes for the Ikko Oh10 and the Shuoer S12 Pro, the KE4 is one IEM that makes me not miss the OH10 for the better, but reminds me how tight the lows of the S12 Pro can get when EQ is brought in. However, I pick the KE4 readily over these. But here's where it gets interesting, the Tangzu Zetian Wu Heyday changes a lot of things that I felt previously for this IEM, and even though I enjoy the KE4 in its flesh and will still maintain the ranking, I just cannot see myself recommend this over the Heyday, that would be a shame. However, versus the likes of the Aful Explorer, in my book the Kiwi Ears KE4 is a literal upgrade. Enough said, this earns an S from me. https://preview.redd.it/f4o9yatcplqe1.jpg?width=6000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=007ca9f3b881e023c09a32d978453d75a6c1baf9 Eartips used: Spinfit W1, CP100+ and CP100, Kiwi Ears Flex, Dunu Candy DAC used: FiiO KA13 (in both normal and desktop mode) Portable devices used: Nothing Phone 2, Google Pixel 6A, Apple iPhone 15 plus Tracklist: * Tool- Pneuma * Rush- Limelight, The Spirit of Radio * Pink Floyd- Time * Daft Punk- Get Lucky * Kendrick Lamar- Alright * Kanye West- Stronger * Celine Dion- All By Myself * Adele- Easy On Me, When We Were Young * The Police- Message in a Bottle * Luciano Pavarotti- Nessun Dorma * Meshuggah- Bleed

Aether - really, really well tuned and balanced across the frequencies. It's a "I've never heard that in this song before" type of listen. KE4 - relaxed, let's kick back kind of sound. Nice warm bass, easy going treble, no worries here, but don't expect a detail monster. Orchestra Lite - not heard them, kind of curious, but may he redundant for me as I have the Aether and KE4.

SM4 sounds about right, but if it’s too bright and fatiguing for you, the Kiwi Ears KE4 might be worth a try. To my ears, the KE4 has harder-hitting bass, more forward vocals, and warmer and less spicy treble compared to the SM4, which I found fun and bright but fatiguing until I swapped out ear tips to SpinFit W1.

I’m still early on in my IEM journey, but I think I’ve settled on the KE4 as the most pleasing to my ears overall. I’ve tried AirPods Pro 2, Wan’er 2, Zero Blue 2, SuperMix 4, and Aether. I’ve tried to AutoEQ the KE4 to other “new meta” IEMs, but none have been as convincing as when I first EQd the SuperMix 4 to KE4, which is what convinced me to buy the KE4 as the frequency response “felt right”. I was curious if a different driver configuration and build quality would bring the FR to life, so I was pleasantly surprised when the actual KE4 sounded better than the SuperMix 4 (EQd to KE4) to my ears. I know I can just stop here and enjoy the KE4, and some may say that it’s enough, but I can’t help but wonder how IEMs in the next price bracket will perform. Imaging, staging, resolution, detail retrieval, clarity, all those terms… Is there a “better” KE4 with almost the same frequency response? The Dusk Default DSP seems to be it on paper, but there’s no way I can test it out myself. Should I simply buy a more expensive set with more drivers and EQ it to KE4 if I find the stock tuning lacking? Any suggestions? Insights?

r/iems • What Is a More “Technically Proficient” KE4? ->

Redwense • 5 months ago

Thanks for these insights! I'm still trying to learn how changes to the frequency response grant certain perceived qualities. I found the SuperMix 4 too bright and fatiguing until I tamed it a bit with SpinFit W1s. (Otherwise, I could only listen to the Fall Out Boy discography for \~30 minutes. No such discomfort with my other IEMs.) Even then, I felt the SM4's mids (?) were too recessed/distant compared to the KE4's more forward/intimate presentation. That's when I became wary of Harman targets and IEMs said to be "very bright". Perhaps that means I'm a bit treble sensitive and prefer something closer to the JM-1/new meta target? The Braindance looks cool as hell but on paper it scares me. I actually have been interested in the Punch! I grew up enabling "bass boost" whenever I could on my Apple devices. I still do. (KE4 on HiBy R4 Eva with DRX10K Dynamics--bass boosted--and Sound Field plugins enabled.) I enjoy a bit of rumble and a lot of punch as long as it doesn't become... soupy? Though I am also curious about "more technical" sets, which is why I bought the Kiwi Ears Aether. To my ears, the Aether is "truly neutral" and quite detailed. So KE4 for fun and relaxed and Aether for fun and analytical. I've been mulling over the Tea Pro, Dusk, and Punch/basshead sets, but I'm worried diminishing returns will kick in hard coming from KE4 and Aether... Like the other poster said, perhaps experiencing an EST driver would be worth it?

I’ve owned both, there’s a lot of difference between the two. https://graph.hangout.audio/iem/5128/?share=Quartet_(00),KE4 The KE4 is the new “meta” tuning versus the Quartet being a more V-shaped, extremely midbass forward IEM. What you’ll get from the KE4 comparatively is more sub bass, waaaay less punch in the low end. The mids are balanced, even emphasized but I wouldn’t say they or the new tuning in general screams “detailed”, if anything these lean neutral warm with what came across to me as muddy due to the treble dropping off a cliff around 7k. I would opt for the Kiwi Quintet or Ziigaat Odyssey over the KE4 personally because they are good showcases of the meta tuning that have more cohesive upper mids and treble that was easier to EQ. I couldn’t get balance out of the KE4 and gave up on it.

Yes! I would love to have a list of what IEMs in different price ranges fit under what sound signature. As a step toward trying to figure out my own tuning preferences, I just spent hours pouring through reviews and comments trying to create my own list of IEMs by sound signature and, oh my, what a royal pain that was! It would have been so nice if something like that already existed. If I want to try a certain sound signature, I need to know what IEMs to go to. And if I identify a sound signature I particularly like using budget IEMs, I will want to know which more premium IEMs share the desired sound signature so I can upgrade if I choose. I have bought my first few sets via a hit or miss process after reading a bajillion reviews and comments and, luckily, have been pretty pleased with each of them. I have the Kiwi Ears Cadenza, the Kiwi Ears Quartet, and the ZiiGaat Doscinco. (I also bought a set of KZ Castor Bass super cheap on Temu just to see what they sound like after reading a review that said everyone should buy these just to hear the crazy bass. When I saw them for only $12, I figured what the heck, why not.) I have enjoyed each of the sets I got in their own way but still don’t really know what my preferred tuning is. A resource that provides information on which IEMs have what tuning profile would go a long way in making the quest to figure that out easier. And, as another commenter mentioned, it would also be helpful to have information on what tuning profiles go best with different genres of music.

That might work. It has two dynamic drivers in isobaric configuration for better bass. You might also check out the newer Kiwi Ears Airoso. It also has great bass but would have better highs. It has an MSRP of $129 but goes on sale for under $100.

Looks like a good roundup. I have both the Kiwi Ears Quartet and Airoso among others. The Airoso is my current favorite, but I don’t listen to the same kind of music you do so I can’t speak to its suitably for that type of music.

I am enjoying my kiwi ears quartet. ,£80 direct from China. The added tariffs may well put these out of your price range.

These are out of my budget but I'd love to know if there are cheaper IEMS with a similar sound profile. I bought a set of Kiwi Ears Quartets (about £80 vs the Punch at £400) based on my budget and reviews that described them as bassy. No way are they bassy and they've been something of a disappointment because of this.

Fair enough yeh. This is just my experience, tho. Its a great IEM for the price, I'd much suggest Kiwi ears Quartet which is $10 cheaper and has similar bass and tonality. Btw the " Sub $100-ish iem list i made" is a commendable list tho. Really helpful !!

Ah yes, Quartet do have some mixed reviews; its a little over the edge for a few, but the bass definitely doesnt fall short and probably worth mentioning. Although I have Deuce now (which is far superior) but I owned Quartet for a while and infact made this choice over Legato at the time. You should give it a try!

I forgot to add that, having tried several IEMs and owned 3, namely Tangzu Warnr's, Kiwi ears Quartet and now the FatfreqxHBB Deuce all under $250, and also having tried IEM's worth $400-$500, I must say that with Deuce I really had a a mind blowing expereince. I have never enjoyed Bass so much. Super exciting, excellent trebles and mids. A crazy all-rounder for the price. Probably in this price bracket, this is an easy top 5 for me!!

You bought one of the cheapest IEMs there is and you compare them to Samsung buds that are like some hundred of dollars in price right? Now that price doesn't always mean everything but there are usually some dsp tech in those smartphone targeted buds and probably more better tuned drivers than in some 20 buck iems. But we can try to troubleshoot some things to make them sound at least a bit better since they are your first IEM I assume. Try different size tips and make sure you get *good* seal. They have to feel like they are plugging your ear and no air leaks in. Foam tips can also make it easier to get that earplug feeling. Give them some time and listen them exclusively for couple of weeks or so and then try your other buds and if they still sound horrible maybe they are just not for you and thats not the end of the world, kz zex are ultra budget iem after all and they come with many compromises even though budget IEMs can be really good for the price. DAC wont help them make sound better if you are already using dongle to plug them in your phone. Try Kiwi Ears Quartet if you want fun, warm-ish and engaging sound.

I know there's a quite a few people who have been waiting for me to finally make this post. I apologize for the delay, I was still waiting for an iem to be delivered. A little background: I've been an fps gamer all my life. I used to play cod semi-profressionally and participated in both online and LAN tournaments for money. The main fps games I play today are apex, cod and siege. Ever since I discovered the audiophile world with studio headphones I was amazed how much better headphones sounded compared to gaming headsets. Fast forward to present day and I am now into IEMs and discovering which ones are the best for gaming. As a disclaimer my thoughts and opinions are my own. I understand there are YouTubers such as Fresh Reviews, Ryan Ho, and Gadgetry Tech that may or may not agree with my takes. So please take my thoughts and opinions with a grain of salt as I am just a chill guy who likes to game competitively. The way I determine if an iem (or headphone) is good for gaming is by 3 main categories: soundstage, imaging, and sound separation. A good and accurate soundstage has good width (x), height (y), and depth (z). Imaging, or stereo imaging, is the spacial perception and ability to perceive the precise placement of sounds. Essentially directional audio. I.e left, right, center, back, top left, etc. Sound separation in a iem or headphone is the ability to pick up different sounds at once without it overlapping each other. So the ability to hear explosions go off, gun shots, gadgets, footsteps, etc without distorting the other sounds. With that being said here's the list of iems that I've tried each with a short review and a rating out of 5 for gaming (3 is usable, anything less is not): CCZ BC01 Pro (1) - way too bassy, bad vertical directional audio. Better options CCZ BC04 Pro (2) - same issue as the BC01 but a much more tolerable bass. Better options Moondrop Chu 2 (1.5) - sound is okay, soundstage felt narrow to me. Imaging was okay. Sound separation was below average. Premium feel and build but I didn't like how heavy they were on my ears. Better options Truthear Gate (2) - sound great but not good for gaming. Narrow soundstage, imaging is okay, below average sound separation. Better options Truthear Zero Red (?) - literally couldn't fit in my ears properly without severe pain. So I couldn't test the IEM and returned it. Will be testing the zero 2 tho Truthear Hexa (4) - comfort is not that good, better than the zero reds tho, soundstage and imaging is okay, sound separation is decent. Also not a fan of how they sound tbh. Too neutral for me Tripowin Vivaci (3) - nearly identical to the zeros 2 in technical performance but I like the zero 2 more in terms of overall sound. And for $5 more you can get the 7Hz G1 which is better than both 7Hz Zero (2.5) - a bit too bright, zero 2 is better 7Hz Zero 2 (3) - average soundstage, decent imaging, below average sound separation. Best $20 iem imo, better options as you continue to go up in price 7Hz G1 (4.5) - a Klean but cheaper with a more fun v-shaped sound signature, get this if you're on a budget 7Hz Sonus (4.5) - the most underrated iem for gaming, great imaging and great soundstage but average sound separation. EW300 is a bit better cuz it has better sound separation Kiwi Ears Canta (3.5) - a bit too bright for most people, good imaging, okay soundstage, below average sound separation Kiwi Ears Quartet (4) - best soundstage imo, super comfy fit, imaging is okay and sound separation is average Kefine Klean (4.5) - a better Delci, better sound separation and arguably better sound signature imo Kefine Delci (4) - good soundstage and imaging, slightly above average sound separation Simgot EW300 (4.5) - nearly endgame but still needs better sound separation. Simgot EM6L (5) - endgame, great soundstage, great imaging, great sound separation. Can't recommend it due to it's nozzle QC issues. Otherwise I probably wouldn't use any other IEM for gaming but this Simgot Supermix 4 (3.5) - not endgame. Might get some hate for this but I was really not impressed by this iem for gaming. It had a narrow soundstage and okay imaging, good sound separation tho. EM6L is way better Other IEMs I am planning to review: ND Planet, Tangzu Waner 2, KZ EDC Pro, Truthear Zero 2 Blue, and Kiwi Ears Airoso Note - in the end I recommend the 7Hz G1, 7Hz Sonus and EW300. The DT 900 Pro X and 770 Pro X are my reference headphones for directional audio for competitive fps games. Those headphones essentially make me feel like I have wall hacks and the iems perform 85-90% as good. The best was definitely the EM6L where I felt nearly no difference in performance with my headphones but I can't recommend it because of the nozzle QC issue. It is an easy fix by super gluing it back on but that shouldn't even happen for an iem worth $110 in the first place. With that being said I will still review iems (and headphones) above and below the respective prices but I feel that you will be perfectly happy with the performance of the iems I recommended. Side Note: I'm currently in the process of building a website with the best gaming peripheral recommendations which includes not only iems but headphones, keyboards, mice, monitors, even pro controllers and more. Hope you all have a blessed day and find this helpful in your purchasing decision!

EDM and Kiwi Ears Quartets IMO a match made in heaven and since you also have the tuning switches you dont really need an EQ.

I mean to be fair the switches on the Quartets dont make a huge difference but enough that if you wanted slighly more bass or slightly more highs that you dont need to pull out an EQ. I still have a EQ setting for them but if I would be forced to use them without it I could. I didnt like the sound of them at first but after they burned in they changed from a 5/10 to a 9/10 for me. With EQ applied like which is like +2 db at the most so not much it turn to a 10/10. I mean those are my first IEMs so maybe I just have a different perspective but IMO if you need heavy EQ to make an IEM sound good just send it back and buy something different. I dont understand why some people buy IEMs knowing they need to EQ the shit out of them to sound good. Btw do you have any recommendations for a carrying case for Iems?
