What a well written review. I have the Anvil 114 and my biggest concern with Pula has been the nozzle hurting my ears. I've been wanting to get back into their brand but this one looks rather chonky as well
Well, I have a few that I'd be willing to recommend from my personal collection. Around the $100 - Moondrop Aria 2. This set, to me, is a set that I enjoy a good amount when it comes to causal listening. It has decent Subbass and enough mids to satisfy. I still think there's enough shimmer in the highs to balance things out. The shell is nice and sturdy and it has a clean and simple look to it. The accessories makes you feel like you bought a premium item as you get tips, a nice cable, and a nice carry case. Around $150 - Pula Anvil 114 Now, on the graph it may not seem too similar to the tuning target, I think the bone conductor carries. I do find it a little bothersome as the way a chew or certain vocal frequencies when I talk can shake the driver, but when it hits, it hits so good. You more so feel bass elements rather than hear it if the IEM sits in the correct spot against your ear. It can get pretty immersive. The accessories are lovely and there's a lot to love about this set. Some notable entries: Figured this wouldn't seem like upgrades since they're cheaper than the Truthears, but alas. I find myself using this over my $400 sets sometimes. Kiwi Ears Cadenza: It's cute and it's fun. Minimal distortion and decent quality. Fun to tip roll and cable swap. I bring this out when I don't want to risk taking out my more expensive sets. It's quality, it's affordable, it's thumbs up. Kinera Celeste Wyvern Abyss: Beautiful faceplate. Art. Bass can get muddy but it feels wonderful. I remember my face lighting up as I remember I only spent around *$20* for something that sounded that fun. CVJ Vivian: This one is more new to my collection but I've been reviewing it for a while now and I cannot get it out of my head. I'm surprised by how wide it sounds on top of the Subbass rumble I get on this thing. It's crazy to me.
I've tried iems from 90 to 350 dollars, all of which were bone Conductors. Plutus Beast $89, Pula Anvils $200, $240 Winds, Winter ultras $250, DMA $300, and Fan3s $350. I found detailing and good separation definitely sounded better on more expensive iems for the most part. Even after trying all Bone Conductors under 400 I still find myself wanting something more, I love the Fan3s but it still has some siblance issues and requires a good bit of power to use at $350 without a discount. The cheapest sounded ok then I got the anvils and was so happy. Then I tried the winds and realized separation and crescendos sucked on anvils but it wasn't bassy and rumbly. So I got the winter ultras and they just sucked at the same price point. So then I got the DMAs and they were pretty good but had issues with separation too. Still liking the Winds at 250 bucks, but needed fun bass. The Fan3s have great details and fun. And is the best I have tried so far. So I guess it just depends. But it does get better, the next jump up for me would be $500 for the new Flipears Aegis. But I just can't drop that easily. Already told the wife no more than 300 lol. I think at $300ish you can find a great set and I've heard great things about the tea pros. I just found bone conductors fun and it helped limit my choices because there are a crap ton of IEMs on the market. Good luck
funny because i was also looking at all the sets that you bought this sale haha, maybe next time we'll align in the 11.11 sale i also have the pula anvil 114 and the kbear kb02 is comparable, much cheaper and you get the soundstage the bone conduction gives in the pula, but missing some technicalities/texture, but if you like the pula you'll enjoy the kb02!
You should get a unit with a bone conduction driver (BCD) if you crave wide stage and pinpoint imaging. BCD really brings out those two aspects of sound. If you can stretch your budget a bit, Penon Fan 3 is superb at $175, but you need to join the Penon VIP email list at the Penon website and wait a few weeks until you receive a code to get that price, which is 50 percent off. It will happen; you just need to be patient. The Pula Anvil also is an excellent BCD set for around $199. I own the Fan 3 and have tested the Anvil extensively. Both are lovely, but I would go for the Fan 3 with the VIP code. I'm also testing the KiwiEars Aether now. Very good for a big planar driver. No BCD. It's $135 at Amazon right now. Very nice imaging, but stage isn't huge. Still, balanced sound. Don't sleep on the Kefine Klean (single dynamic driver) or Artti T10 (single planar driver), either. Both have excellent balance and vocal clarity, with solid stage and imaging, at just $50 each. Punch WAY above their weight despite no BCD.
