Hmm, I have the Martilo and I’ve been using my new TSMR Armor for a while now. To me, both are great sets and honestly feel like sidegrades to each other. The Martilo sounds leaner and cleaner and more natural(timbre), while the TSMR Armor is more musical, warm and thick. My Armor doesn’t sound harsh at all. If anything, it feels almost “allergic to highs” in the way it’s tuned. I actually need to turn on tuning switch 3 to fully enjoy the set haha. I’m surprised you found them harsh at all! I was disappointed at the lack of treble when I first got them. If you want a cleaner sound, definitely go for the Martilo. It has more sub-bass but scooped mid-bass. The lower mids are less emphasized, which makes it feel cleaner. The treble is way more present and consistent than on the TSMR Armor, but it’s never harsh at all.
No fatigue at all when I listen at medium-high volume. Martilo and TSMR Armor are both sets where cranking them up makes them really come alive, and your ears won’t scream at you.
I mean, for me, they are both warm. I’ve never tried the Portazo, so I don’t know if they’re similar. I have an Artti T10, and those are way spicier in the treble than these two. But Armor is a great choice if you’re highphobic because it’s tuned for that.
Got into the iem rabbit hole, thanks to this sub, picking up a pair of Artti T10 Pro's some months back. My use case for iems is only for listening to a lossless collection of my fave music on FiiO M21. It's mostly electronic, ambient, cinematic stuff like Pink Floyd, Shpongle, Opeth, Massive Attack, Hans Zimmer soundtracks. Now there's not much I can complain about the T10 Pro; trebles and mid-range details just come alive on this unit. But it feels lacking on the bass end, especially when I a/b it against my Technics AZ100 wireless with the same eq settings. I am wondering which ones, in the sub-$300 range, could fill the gap on bass end with more thump, without sacrificing what's good about T10 Pro's. Seeing generally great things about Ziigaat Odyssey 1 and Xenns Mangird Tea Pro, is one of them or another specific set the answer to my situation?
Much appreciate your detailed write-up; this has got me seriously considering the Armor. Incubus - Echo is precisely a case of where I'm finding T10 Pro bass lacking oomph. And an iem that can renew appreciation in Hotel California in and of itself requires a hat tip.
The laid back treble 'fix' (if you want more) is to turn it up louder, the treble is so silky smooth you won't get fatigue. I was also worried about the 8k dip before I purchased but I don't notice anything missing in the treble response, it all sounds really natural and my least 'coloured' sounding highs of all my iems. I'm normally eq-ing the snot out of the highs in my other sets but haven't had to touch the armors.
Listed from cheapest to most expensive: CVJ Luki KB Ears Rosefinch 7hz Legato 7hz Diablo Fatfreq Deuce TSMR Armor TLDR winner: TSMR Armour So I've been on the hunt for an IEM that works well for metal with thunderous bass that clearly defines kick drum from bass guitar. I'm treble sensitive and what would probably be considered an extreme bass-head in this community, so my opinions will probably only be valid for a small selection of you but hopefully this helps someone. Impressions (favourite to least favourite) without any EQ: Armor: does everything right for my ears. The only IEM that I haven't felt the need to touch EQ. Kick and bass guitar are balanced wonderfully and a really pleasant warm sound signature without fatiguing highs yet still sounds clear and transparent. Is an absolute monster if you plug in to the deuces impedance adaptor. Diablo: Similar thoughts to the Armor. Less sub bass than the armour but has fantastic midbass punch thanks to the planar. Also a pleasant warm signature though the slightly boosted uppermid/high presentation makes me slightly prefer the Armor. Close contest though! Deuce: lots of sub bass but in stock form without EQ the lack of midbass makes it sound thinner and more brittle than the other two above when listening to rock and metal. Highs are a bit harsh for my ears without the midbass to smooth it out. This pair sounds fantastic for genres I don't really listen to much though - think any music that's sub bass heavy - R&B, hip-hop etc. With EQ the deuce can be made to work well for rock and has the largest quantity of sub bass of the others, so its still a set I enjoy using depending on my mood. This pair made me decide to not try Martilos as they seem to have a similar tuning looking at graphs and reviews. Legato: plenty of sub and mid bass but lacking some definition between kick and bass guitar. Upper frequencies are a mixed bag: a little muffled/veiled yet also has some sibilance. Probably the one set I wouldn't recommend as it sits in an odd price bracket where it's just outside of 'cheap' where you get the value for money recommendation yet just a little below the midrange bracket which are a significant step up. Rosefinch: similar to legato - less veiled but has a very irritating fatiguing spike at around 8k that kills this pair for me. With EQ these turn in to quite a good value for money bass-head pair though. These are my knock around pair for travel, workout etc. This pair with a cheap peq dongle like the JA11 would be my budget conscious recommendation. Luki: just a super cheap $10 set to test out bone conduction. Not enough sub bass and wonky tuning. EQing helps a little but still sounds cheap. However I love the way it made bass guitar sound in some tracks - assuming that's the BCD. Makes me want to try something like the Penon Archangel but for now I'm satisfied with the Armor and not sure I want to push this hobby in to the high price bracket when I have nowhere in my hometown to 'try before you buy' (Brisbane).
So these arrived today. Have only spent an hour with them but have some thoughts already. I'm mainly going to give my opinion on the bass response and vibration haptics. Have compared to GK Kunten (both use zenith driver) and Penon Archangel (unfair premium bone conduction comparison). Test track I was using was 'Georgio by Moroder - Daft punk'. The last minute of the track, has a very deep but tight sub bass kick drum with elements of electronic and rock (guitar, bass, synth etc) and gets quite busy, in a good way. As expected the Vibe X has a similar sound signature and quality to the Kunten until you hit the low end. There's noticeably less sub bass than the Kuntens and a buttload less than the Archangels. This translates to the kick drum being less 'present' in the mix. Then on a tom hit, the vibes suddenly do their thing and you feel the hit of the toms in your ear canal thanks to the BC/vibration driver. Bass guitar can sound a bit bloated at times. Sounds like the BCs are most reactive to around 80-100hz - kind of like having a subwoofer without room tuning applied where it reverberates more around certain wavelengths. They shake and thump quite noticeably when touching them with my fingers but in the ear the effect is significantly less noticeable at least for my ears. I tried different insertion depths and angle etc and could definitely feel the vibration but not as much as I was expecting and a more narrower frequency response range than I was hoping. Interested to hear other people's opinions though as I feel the vibration drivers might react differently to various individuals ear anatomy. Technically they are meant to vibrate down to 5hz or something silly, maybe my ears just feel/detect it more at 90ish hz. If they do a V2 down the track, I'd love to keep the Zenith driver, Kunten tuning and add a modest bass boost and have the vibration driver respond across a broader range with the most noticeable point around 40-60hz. Just like with large speaker systems/live music where you begin to 'feel' rather than 'hear' the lower frequencies. Basically copy how Skullcandy implement their crusher haptics, refine it and apply it to a high fidelity iem. TLDR: mid and treble similar to Kunten, suprisingly subdued sub bass (60hz and below), vibration not very consistent across bass frequencies - responds most to 80-100hz. Suffers from some bass/midbass bloat. If anyone else has received theirs I'm keen to hear your opinion!
No sorry. Only the CVJ Luki/Konoka and archangel. The CVJ was odd. Haven't listened to it in a while but my memory tells me its bcd was centred around 150-200hz and had to turn it up significantly louder or bass boost the snot out of it to get it going. Sounded very cheap overall. The archangel is a totally different BCD type - much more subtle. More for texture and soundstage than ear rattling bass. It's dynamic drivers thump and rumble enough already.
My bad, wasn't so much a review but my thoughts on the vibration driver and bass response. Kinda hard to avoid technical words when I'm talking about a very specific aspect of it. Honestly, I haven't given it enough of a listen to for a valid opinion of the overall sound but it's looking like it's not to my liking. I really like my sub bass and this has the least amount out of all my sets. It's basically a Kunten with mid bass dialled up that vibrates and sub bass dialled down. That could be one mans treasure and anothers trash. Going to spend some more time with it over the next week and also play with EQ before I decide whether it's staying on my desk or going in my iem graveyard drawer.
I love my TSMR Armor's for metal. Huge bass and smooth non-fatiguing treble. Not sure on your budget but it's a similar price bracket to the astrals.
Yeah, I wasn’t a huge fan of them either. Tried all kinds of tips. All the switch settings. They weren’t comfortable and I just didn’t like the sound. Wound up returning them. After all of the reading that I did about them, I was really excited to get them. I really wanted to like them. Sadly, they just weren’t for me.
TSMR Armor. I see so much praise for this thing, but it just didn’t work for me. I found the bass to be muddy, and bled excessively into the low-mids. The upper mids were a bit too forward for me, and I wasn’t a fan of the treble. Also, the nozzles were a bit large for my ears and they were uncomfy.
I have no idea who recommended them, honestly. I saw multiple posts in many different places. Maybe they were all you. :) It's a shame -- all of the reviews that I'd read made me excited for them. I REALLY wanted to like them but they were uncomfortable and I couldn't find any tips or combination of switch positions that made them enjoyable to me. It took a lot for me to return them because I kept thinking I'd enjoy them once I got used to them.. but I just couldn't. Now you've made me curious about the Martilo, though. I'll have to look into that a bit more. In a month or three. After my wallet recovers from the recent AliExpress sale. :/
Je suis un utilisateur d iem chaud.... Je recommande kefine quatio, sound rhyme SR7, Tansio Mirai Armor...
Obligatory TSMR Armor recommendation here. Bass is amazing, clear vocals and instruments with great separation, all for about $240-260 normal price. There’s not a lot of reviews but the few people who do have them, including me, swear by them. Edit to add: they’re a gold flakish colored resin set, so may fit what your friend is looking for.
TSMR Armor really needs the sound turned up to bring out the treble. But it’s there and I don’t feel like it’s harsh at all. If anything maybe not as forward as my other sets.
Tansio Mirai Armor should be nr 1 imho
