First week felt like sleeping on a gym mat wrapped in herbs, then it slowly softened after body heat broke in the latex layers. The real surprise was airflow—way cooler than expected compared to memory foam hybrids tried earlier.
I'm going on 3 mo w my eco green base mod from Costco. Added a 3" merino wool topper, naturepedic organic pillows. I am sleeping better. Took over month to get use to it after switching from novafoam.
I bought avocado eco green base mattress & added an Etsy ordered merino wool topper. Stuck with all organic. Use shark pole fan on slowest speed. Mattress is more on firm side but seems fine after about 40 nights & counting. Definitely sleeps cooler. Disposed of novafoam 14". I did experience a great few nights sleep in an Ayers hotel in CA that uses a Dream Sleeper II specifically made for Ayers. Had Ayers in name. A+ mattress too!
Yes especially if you live in the Sun Belt area or where you might get high humidity. I just checked my Novaform mattress from Costco & bought the base Avocado mattress. Added a 3" merino wool topper to help with cooling. Working so far at over 2 months use. Check out more on organic mattresses & bedding and how these are appealing with their unique properties. You'll begin to understand the big picture. I discovered merino wool products for hiking as in socks, shirts etc and am convinced of their unique properties for cooling, ventilation. No synthetic substance yet is capable of imitating these all natural organic properties.
I have the original one from several years ago (the ones with the built-in pillowtop that were tufted). Funny it was right before they won the Consumer Reports award and blew up. But I was coming off a horrible experience with a fancier Aireloom mattress that offgassed so bad that after two nights of sleeping on it I ended up with bronchitis for months. Avocado was one of very few brands back then that was more on the natural end (not organic back then, but still using natural materials like wool and cotton). I took a chance and really hit the jackpot. I still LOVE it. I was actually recently considering moving this one to a guest room and buying another to firm it up a little, but my god the prices have gone a bit bananas. The closest model to mine (the green model plus) would now be $4k "on sale" for a king. Geezus. No can do. And it looks like they're desperately trying to move up-market with the newer fancier models, and it makes me wonder what compromises they've made with the original model to convince people to spend even more. And there's literally NO WAY I would buy one of the higher end models-- the highest end model is like $14k hahahahahaha.. IF I could even afford them (I can't) at those prices I'd buy a Vispring or Hastens. So tldr; I love mine but I decided against buying a new one because too much money and because mine is still perfectly fine. But if I needed to, I'd probably go get the Costco version with the thinner latex and buy a Sleep on Latex pad with maybe a thin Holy Lamb wool topper for cooling.
I've had good experiences with Avocado. And, based on my research, they aren't "greenwashing" the way some "eco-friendly" brands sometimes do. They've got some pricier models for sure, but take a look at the Avocado Eco-Organic. It looks like it's less than $1,500 for a Queen right now, and it's their most affordable model.
I have the most affordable of the avocado brand mattresses (eco I think?) which was $1200 and worth every penny. Super comfy and fair trade so I’m not sleeping on the backs of child slaves. Is firm in a solid sense but still soft enough to get cozy.
What was your reasoning for doing this instead of buying a latex hybrid mattress? What setup did you end up making? I recently went to the Avacado store. Their cheaper medium bed feels right support wise but not comfort wise. So its a medium mattress, and when I put a medium topper on it, it feels good. Both layers Dunlop latex. I sleep on the next level up mattresses and enjoy the medium there, which is a firm mattress with a soft talalay topper on it. I can't decide between them, so need to go back. But I know there are other similar mattresses out there like Latex Mattress Factory Luxerion Hybrid, Sweetzzz Honey Hybrid. I feel like ultimately I need 4" of latex between me and the springs. Unsure if I should go Hard, Soft, or Medium, Medium. Any tips?
Im thinking about going the layer by layer latex route. Im sort of miffed my Avacado is hav I need body indentation so soon. I thought it was a simple design of pocketed and zoned coils, with latex. Latex shouldnt sag. The coil system seemed to be well engineered. How is it leaving indentations? The wool layer?
