Many parents today are looking at all natural mattresses for their kids. For a 5 year old, I would consider the Leesa Youth Natural, Avocado Kids, Naturepedic’s Verse Organic Mattress, or the My Green Mattress Pure Eco Organic Kids Mattress. One of the main reasons families gravitate toward natural mattresses is reduced chemical exposure. Young children spend a large amount of time sleeping, and conventional foam mattresses can contain synthetic materials, chemical flame retardants, and adhesives that may off-gas volatile organic compounds. Natural and organic mattresses are typically made without these substances, which can be especially reassuring for developing bodies and sensitive respiratory systems. Leesa, which is part of the 3z brand family made in the USA with greenguard, or CertiPUR-US (for synthetic foams) certifications that verify for low chemical exposures and pollutants. Another benefit of natural mattresses is firmer, more supportive construction that can be better suited to a child’s growth. Many natural kids mattresses use latex, coils, or dense natural fibers that maintain their shape over time. The Leesa Youth Natural is rated for up to 250lbs, so the mattress is likely to last well into his teens if not by the time he is beyond high school. This type of support helps keep a child’s spine in healthy alignment and can prevent sagging as their weight increases. Durability is important at this age, since a well-made mattress can comfortably last from early childhood into the teen years. Natural mattresses are also good choices for their breathability and temperature regulation. Materials like organic cotton, wool, and natural latex allow for better airflow than traditional memory foam, helping children sleep cooler and more comfortably. Wool in particular naturally regulates temperature and moisture, which can be helpful for kids who tend to sleep warm or sweat at night. You still need a good mattress protector, and there are good organic cotton ones that offer two sided cotton with a thin water proof layer between, but still very breathable. At the end of the day, many parents appreciate the transparency and certifications that come with natural and organic mattresses. My kids who recently had children of their own over the past 3 years ( 5 of them in total) all requested dad to get organic mattresses and protectors, Certifications such as GOTS, GOLS, or GREENGUARD provide third-party verification about how materials are sourced and manufactured. For families who prioritize health, sustainability, and long-term value, these factors make natural mattresses an appealing option for a young child’s bed. There are however, some who choose not to pay for those certifications, but still provide and organic mattress, that has gone through the same processes to qualify for Organic status, but prioritize value for their clients, over the certification status. While the Leesa Youth Mattress is an excellent mattress as is the Bear Cub Mattress (both 3z brands), I tend to favor spring supported mattress over all foam mattresses as they tend to prove less hot sleeping. Sorry for this long story, but I am an advocate for kids using natural fibers and foams.
We really like our Bear mattress — it’s held up well over about 5 years!
Personally, I won’t go back from memory foam. I don’t like TempurPedic but we have a Bear mattress on our bed and a much cheaper Juno for the guest room. I like both more than any coil mattress I’ve had.
We use a Bear mattress.
Bear mattress I can’t sleep pain free without it. When traveling I bring their mattress topper
I've tried one, and the Bear mattress really surprised me (in a good way). I don't see a lot of comments on it. But it is definitely one of my favs too
I just bought a bear last night on the MLK sale at 35% off. Somewhere around 2011 I bought a purple bed. I loved it so about two years ago maybe a year I bought another purple bed my original burned in Wolsey fire. This one has been killing me and finally I just said I don’t care about the money. I gotta feel better so maybe they’re still having the sale learned about it through wired and read their reviews and we’re pretty extensive. It’s a combo of springs with foam I think they’re made in Arizona and apparently really good. Plus you get a long time to return them for any reason not as expensive as sleep numbers. Would love to hear what you end up with but if you really cannot afford much they’re pretty good deals at Costco for pretty cheap. There’s even one that they did wired in a budget option in the $300 range but I don’t remember what it was. I think it was on Amazon actually. Let us know how you get along.
We love our Bear mattress; had it now 9 years and it's still holding up well. I'm a diehard stomach sleeper as well.
I'm a week into owning a Bear Mattress. My wife and I have been getting great sleep on it.
We really like our Bear mattress (online). We had (still have) a queen for several (7-8?) years with no noticeable wear so got the same when we upgraded to a king. The waterproof mattress pad is a must. It’s on the firmer side within for support but has a nice top so it never felt uncomfortable to me. They have periodic sales - we got ours with cover plus pillows for just under $1000. This was a few years ago but you can definitely get a queen under $1k with the right deal.
Bear mattress has been a godsend. Going on 5 years with it and still very comfy
