They don’t sell the mattress you need at Costco. I just got a Beautyrest Black from a wholesale rug and mattress store, they delivered it and took my old mattress and I paid under 1k total. I’d keep looking for a real high end mattress. Avoid the fancy stores you can still get new name brand mattresses for cheap. The specific model I got (C Class) is discontinued now. This is probably why it was cheaper. I promise this is a huge huge huge difference from the foam / latex beds that can be folded into a tiny box
I have to mention the importance for center supports that reach the floor. I was skeptical because I have a very sturdy center support beam. But my mattress (BeautyRest Black C-Class Medium pillow top 2023) was failing and I was in extreme hip pain every time I slept on it. I bought center support legs on Amazon and instantly more comfortable and no pain when I sleep. I feel so dumb!
A "natural" mattress is going to have a bunch of connotations. 1st by Federal law, every mattress and foundation must have fire retardant layers. Most organic materia that would be suitable for beddingl is not fire retardant. 2nd, most natural materials that are comfortable tend to breakdown faster than man made materials. Beautyrest tried putting a layer of silk, alpaca wool and cashmere into the last generation of Beautyrest Black in order to make their product more competitive with the trend. It failed so bad that people still think all beautyrest black mattresses are bad, even though the line got discontinued a year or so ago. The unfortunate truth is that to get natural materials in a bed that are both durable and comfortable, you end up at high end mattresses like the higher end Kingsdown lines and even then they're not ALL natural Just like latex that's actually natural and durable, it becomes cost prohibitive after a point. Certipur certification is the Standard for ensuring there's no VOCs and that a mattress won't be hazardous to your health. Im also personally skeptical of any warranty period longer than a manufacturer has existed. (Looking at practically all DTC beds) Especially when the manufacturer has affiliate links on every click bait article about mattresses. Note: these are my opinions as a long time employee of a very large mattress retailer.
This answer somewhat depends on price range due to the qualities of materials found in each technologies at different prices. In the sub 600ish range, foam will likely be more comfortable, as there is more pressure relieving materials in them. Typically, if looking at innerspring mattresses, you definitely want wrapped or pocketed coils. (The more of them, the merrier, if they're going to provide a minimal amount of them, at least make sure their zoned so it FEELS more substantial.(most of the time that companies use zoned coils its so they can use 25-40% less coils and still have the bed not feel like complete trash On top of that, you probably want good pressure relieving materials on top of those coils, if you don't see the word "memory" it typically means they're using either a support foam ( very hard) or they use poly fill foam (soft but you sink down to the support layer faster) The Gel foam is typically gel beads added to that foam to make it a bit more supportive and MAYBE a touch of temperature regulation Then you get to the $2,000+ range and your comparing Tempurpedic vs entry Stearns or high end Posturepedic. I know Tempurpedic gets a lot of hate. My pick between them is the Tempur-Pedic simply due to low return rates Up to the $3,000, I personally prefer the luxury innerspring mattresses from beautyrest black or the lux estate lines .. the proadapt and purple restore lines don't have quite enough support in their 12" profile The LuxeAdapt Medium Hybrid is Personal favorite mattress on MF floors The luxebreeze, summit and reserve are definitely nuanced. I personally find the breeze material to add an unwanted extra firmness layer and I don't sleep hot. The Reserve is pretty 🔥 Hope this helps.
What’s your BMI, if you don’t mind? As a lightweight side sleeper I tried the Beautyrest C Plush pillow top and thought that my hips sank in way too much. I felt similarly about the medium pillow top.
I just bought a mattress that I don’t like because it has an awful chemical smell even after a month. At the store they told me I could exchange it (one time) after 30 days, but before 120 das are up. I never bothered to ask about the details on that. I spent more than I normally would and then found out the policy is exchange it for something “equal or greater value, paying the difference” which makes it really annoying because there is really nothing at the store that is equal value, just more expensive, or it jumps down to less expensive. I would ask their very specific policies. After lying down on all these mattresses I got a little too distracted and forgot to ask those questions. In hindsight, I could’ve started at the lower price one I liked and then upgraded it if I didn’t like it.
Beautyrest Black 2, I made a post on here and others thought maybe the one I have is defective. I just don’t know. I had a Beautyrest before it and it did not smell at all.
Furniture store, it’s regional in only a few states. I bought my last mattress from them and loved it so I don’t think it’s a problem with the store. I was moreso wondering if it had anything to do with the manufacture date of the new one I bought. It was manufactured end of December so it was less than two months old when it was delivered to me so I don’t know if that has anything to do with it.
I actually think it could possibly be so many layers of memory foam, maybe they’re glued together and that’s what I’m smelling. Anytime I press on it I smell more chemical.
I think the Series 3 is the sweet spot. I'm a side sleeper that normally likes a soft, but the series 3 medium pillow top is super supportive (soft has the plush coils, medium and firm have the firm coils) and there is plenty of pressure relief even in the medium. Of course, everyone sleeps different, which is why they make 9 different feels in the series 3. I can't speak too much towards the hybrids if that's what you're looking for, as I'm not familiar with the series 3 hybrids (and wasn't a big fan of s1 or s2 hybrids). The series 2 in your budget, medium pillow top, it's a good bed, but it's closer to the series 1 than the series 3. They're a lot of money, but they have the warranty, and generally stand behind it. I'm not sure what else you tried, but in that range the only other thing that compares for me is going up to a Tempur Luxe Adapt.
This is exactly the reason for the split king though. I'd just make sure you're hitting the same profile. You don't want the bigger partner on a 13" extra firm and the lighter one on a 15.5" soft pillow top. You could have a soft luxe adapt and they could have a firm luxe breeze, same profiles but completely different feels and temp sensitivity. Or you could get a Stearns Estate soft pillow top and they a Stearns Estate firm pillow top. Or a Beautyrest Black Series 3 Plush pillow top and Firm pillow top (this will probably be the biggest difference in feel and support of any mattresses from the same line, because Beautyrest actually has a plush coil for the plush BR Blacks and a firm coil for the medium and firm BR Blacks). Although you both might actually like the BR Black Series 3 medium pillow top, because it does have a pretty cushy immediate feel, and the lighter partner may not even engage the support coils.
The maine concern I have here is you're looking at firm mattresses but you sleep on your side. Id look into a hybrid firm or a innerspring medium no pillow top to start. If you want high quality and good warranty. Go to any mattress firm and try a Beauty rest black medium and a tempurpedic medium hybrid. Side sleepers do not need a firm bed.
So get it warrantied. If you got it from a repuptable dealer it'll have a 10 year warranty. Theres always a lemon in a million. Also you said shor period of time? Like suring a break in period? Every mattress is going to have an impression especially between 30 and 120 days. These beds have insanley strong steel coils and foams. Make sure its actually the series 3 that been out for maybe a year now. The older series 3 with natural materials are garbage.
I hate beautyrest Black medium. There is no support. It's going back after the holidays, even though it's going to cost me in restocking fees.
