Definitely go to a store. I’m a combo sleeper and thought I should get a medium since I sleep on my side sometimes. Medium was not as supportive as I like. I got a firm innerspring mattress…. Beautyrest Pressuresmart 2.0 Firm at Mattress Firm. I bought a separate topper to add more cushion. After having a pillow top, I learned that the cushion layer dips after a couple years so I prefer having the ability to replace the topper instead of the whole mattress. It’s easy to make a firm mattress feel like a medium by adding a topper, but you cannot make a medium into a firm.
I love my Beautyrest PressureSmart™ 2.0 Firm 11" Mattress
I'm not sure what your budget is. I am on a very fixed income, but my back was a wreck sleeping on the majority of mattresses I've tried. I have both upper and lower back pain. I learned the hard way that memory foam mattresses just aren't firm enough for me. Though I did have a Temperpedic hybrid mattress that did pretty good. But I've learned that finding budget price coil mattresses is a real challenge now. After seeing some people here on Reddit recommending a Beautyrest PressureSmart 2.0 I scraped together the $1100 it cost to get one, and absolutely love it. It is very firm, so if you don't like a very firm mattresses, this wouldn't be it. But I need super firm and I have been so incredibly happy with it. My back has improved immensely since making the switch.
Greenwood is a only a 10-inch thick mattress. I think he'd be better off with the 12-inch Beautyrest Silver "BRS900" which is a pretty decent mattress, a step up from the entry level models like Greenwood or BRS800, and won't cost much more when on sale. I think Mattress Firm calls it a Beautyrest "Pressure Smart" but the price is way too high. I got mine on sale from [HomeDepot.com](http://HomeDepot.com) which had (and may still have) free delivery and a 90-day return policy with free pickup and no return fees.
The albany is the direct step down and the entry level to the posterpedic elite line it goes ashurst, norman, lacey, albany, brenham, high point in order of quality. The pressure smart line up is a much older line. I like the sealys as the elite lineup (High Point, Brenham, and Albany) and the Lacey reinforces the center third with additional coils they call it their max support technology. The beautyrest pressuresmarts reinforce the center third with foam instead of steel, have a foam encasement instead of edge to edge coils making the center softer then the edges, and have lower quality covers. If you want best quality in a traditional innerspring Sterns and Foster is the answer. They will have 500 more coils then any of the beds listed, foams designed by tempurpedic and much tighter quality control then the other two. The estate line up is close to the same price as well. Stay away from the studio it's a sealy that has carved the face off a sterns and stapled it on.
Hey - sorry if this was emBEDded in the comments somewhere, but did you try one of the the pressuresmart beautyrests in person at the mattress firm? I'm in the same boat as you, and I liked that one in person a lot - felt similar to a mattress i was chasing (sherwood elegance). Wondering if you felt the similarly if you had tried, I too am trying to avoid buying from them before i exhaust all other internet ones or topper combos. So far. that's the only one that's felt close in person and it feels like a losing game.
So many subjective statements in this question.. firm as in hard or firm as in supportive? Comfortable is always a subjective term Long time meaning like 5 years or 20 years? Solid options will utilize encased or pocketed coils. (You may have to look at diagrams to see it) The Beautyrest Greenwood would be the closest thing at a Mattress Firm is currently $520 made by Beautyrest and has a 10yr warranty. Marketed as a firm, although definitely medium vibes after the break in period. Oldest bed on mattress firms floor and I actually don't think i have had anyone return it or submit a warranty claim, at least in recent memory. I'd avoid memory foam beds that come rolled in boxes for durability... vacuum sealing low density foams is cool and they'll be good for a couple years but everyone I've personally met that hates all foam beds got one of those. I don't know about return rates and warranty claims on beds not sold at MF due to this being the only retailer I've worked for in the last 10 years.
The Pressuresmart is more akin to the BRS1000 series (1,000 coil density in queen, although i can't find it anymore) but has Carbon Boost foam, a center third lumbar support and an infinicool cover. When not on sale, I'd agree it's priced way too high, although when on sale (it is now), it's a pretty good bed. However, OP wants to be under $700 I've seen a lot the br900 in outlet, but that's also probably due to not having them on any showroom floor and beds bought without trying them first end up being returned way more frequently. However, it looks like we can sell them for $650 if we're price matching (found one at Costco for $650 so I'd price match it anyway)
