Based on 1 year's data from Mar 14, 2026 How it works
Well, not the co-founder, but an integral part of their management team and I would be happy to help. I have slept on and tested several versions of the BR PS 1 and 2. I am a little heavier at 6' and 220 lbs, and for me, I was not impressed at all. That does not mean others will not have success with it, but it simply did not work for my wife and me. I have also found that many people who report issues with this series tend to have very similar complaints. I have coined what I experienced the “swimming pool cover” effect. The mattress uses a perimeter foam encasement, meaning a thick, high-density foam surrounds the spring support system. This is intended to provide a clean, squared-off look and firm edge support, something you are supposedly able to sit on comfortably while putting on shoes or socks. One of the primary issues is the stark contrast between the very firm edge foam and the primary sleeping surface. Once you move off the edge and onto the mattress, the experience changes significantly. The memory foam in the comfort layer is not particularly high quality, and as it warms up, it softens quickly and allows the sleeper to sink too deeply. Over time, this repeated sinking causes the mattress cover to stretch excessively. After several months, the stretched cover begins to take on a permanent sag in the main sleeping area, while the portion of the cover stretched tightly over the firm edge foam remains taut. Most people get into bed by sitting or leaning on the edge, placing a leg, hip, knee, or backside there, before rolling toward the center. By that point, the center has already softened and sunk, much like a swimming pool cover that sags in the middle after rain or snow collects on it. The result is that sleepers tend to roll toward the center, which has become the lowest point of the mattress, and gradually sink together. Great for newlyweds, perhaps, assuming you do not mind overheating while slowly sinking into softening memory foam. I also do not like the fact that when sleeping near the edge, you can end up with part of your body on the very firm perimeter foam and the rest on the much softer main sleeping surface. That mismatch in support and feel is uncomfortable and, in my experience, contributes to soreness. This is not just theory for me. I have a relative and a couple of friends who have purchased this series for their guest rooms, and whenever we stay with them, we consistently wake up with sore bodies. The foundation is your unsung hero of you bedding system. Most mattress folks find that sleepers will spend thousands on a mattress, and then go and by a poorly constructive and supportive foundation, that cripples the mattress. If you had the choice, finding a mattress that is a few bucks less expensive and transferring that expense to the foundation is a much safer and prudent option. An inadequate foundation will kill a good mattress, but a good foundation, can sometimes make an average at best mattress, seem like a luxury.
Tempur Pedic any Firm lmao but idk I think the Pressure Smart Xtra Firm is insane
BeautyRest Pressure Smart Xtra Firm or Stearns and Foster Luxe Estate Ultra Firm. Very good!
When I was mattress shopping, I was also looking for a bed with no memory foam. It’s nearly impossible to find one these days. I tried an engineered sleep bed and I ended up really disliking it. Their 10/10 extra firm wasn’t firm enough for me and a little too springy. I tried latex toppers too. I thought I’d like latex, and it turns out I do not like the pushback feeling at all! Thankfully, both of those options had refundable returns. I ended up going with a Beauty Rest Pressure Smart 2.0 in Extra Firm from Mattress Firm, because that particular bed is only sold through them. I also wanted to avoid a mattress firm, but ultimately they had the best mattress option for me. I don’t know what your sleep preferences are, but the BR Pressure Smart Extra Firm has very minimal memory foam or foam and the intention was to find a quality topper to customize the softness of an extra firm. But I ended up really liking how firm it was and I sleep with a 1.5 inch regular foam topper on it now and I’m very happy. Extra firm beds are going to have the least amount of memory foam in them. I guess that’s what I’m getting at here ;)
My spine is attached to my skull with titanium bolts, my spine is held together with titanium plates, I have back issues. My mattress, which I change every five years is a Beauty Rest Black extra firm. Yes they are expensive, yes, it does the job. I sleep well, I rest and I awaken with no more pain than what I had when I went to sleep. Your back is one of the most important structures in your health and life, do not fall for gimmicks or advertising.
For the mattress, Simmons BeautyRest Extra Firm 13 3/4 inch height. Different stores have different names, so go by the height.
I'm not sure what your budget is. I am on a very fixed income, but my back was a wreck sleeping on the majority of mattresses I've tried. I have both upper and lower back pain. I learned the hard way that memory foam mattresses just aren't firm enough for me. Though I did have a Temperpedic hybrid mattress that did pretty good. But I've learned that finding budget price coil mattresses is a real challenge now. After seeing some people here on Reddit recommending a Beautyrest PressureSmart 2.0 I scraped together the $1100 it cost to get one, and absolutely love it. It is very firm, so if you don't like a very firm mattresses, this wouldn't be it. But I need super firm and I have been so incredibly happy with it. My back has improved immensely since making the switch.
The albany is the direct step down and the entry level to the posterpedic elite line it goes ashurst, norman, lacey, albany, brenham, high point in order of quality. The pressure smart line up is a much older line. I like the sealys as the elite lineup (High Point, Brenham, and Albany) and the Lacey reinforces the center third with additional coils they call it their max support technology. The beautyrest pressuresmarts reinforce the center third with foam instead of steel, have a foam encasement instead of edge to edge coils making the center softer then the edges, and have lower quality covers. If you want best quality in a traditional innerspring Sterns and Foster is the answer. They will have 500 more coils then any of the beds listed, foams designed by tempurpedic and much tighter quality control then the other two. The estate line up is close to the same price as well. Stay away from the studio it's a sealy that has carved the face off a sterns and stapled it on.
Hey - sorry if this was emBEDded in the comments somewhere, but did you try one of the the pressuresmart beautyrests in person at the mattress firm? I'm in the same boat as you, and I liked that one in person a lot - felt similar to a mattress i was chasing (sherwood elegance). Wondering if you felt the similarly if you had tried, I too am trying to avoid buying from them before i exhaust all other internet ones or topper combos. So far. that's the only one that's felt close in person and it feels like a losing game.
