Love my Engineered Sleep mattress. My husband and I compliment it every night.

We have the classic hybrid in extra firm. I did a bunch of research as my husband has complained forever that our mattresses have never been firm enough for him. We have been sleeping on it for two months. Their customer service is fantastic too.

Most people think they need super soft for side sleeping but that's actually not quite right. You want something in that medium to medium-soft range (like 5-6 on the firmness scale). Too soft and your hips sink in way too much, your spine gets out of alignment, and you get MORE hip pain. It's not just about overall firmness. You need to look for something that's just RIGHT with decent pressure relief in the comfort layers (like 3" of responsive foam) but with good support down under. You want to sink IN enough to cradle your hips and shoulders, but not sink DOWN so far. Sometimes hip pain for side sleepers is actually from a mattress that's TOO soft, not too firm. Your hips are the heaviest part of your body, so if they're sinking too deep, it puts stress on everything.

It only comes in one firmness level, and it feels like a true medium-firm. I’d rate it around 5.5-6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

From the ones I’ve tested, I’d suggest the Helix Dawn (they have Core, Luxe, and Elite versions, so choose the one that fits your budget) or the Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid Mattress in 12". Both mattresses come with reinforced edges and are rated 8 to 10 out of 10 on the firmness scale. They’re also very transparent about the materials used in their mattress construction, and I trust them enough.

After a bunch of research I just bought an Engineered Sleep Classic and am really happy with it. Very good customer service and they can help give recommendations. They are also willing to customize by request.

Check out Engineered Sleep. I have the Classic Hybrid Cushion Firm and it's about an 8 on the firm scale. It's more like a traditional spring mattress than the modern "hybrid" in that it's mostly coils with a couple inches of polyfoam and a soft cotton cover on top. Really high quality and it's flippable (the same on both sides). They also have the Duo mattress that you can swap the comfort layer on. The guys that own and run it are so nice and very helpful. If you give them a call they will get you the right product and might even be able to make some custom adjustments for you. They also have a 100 day trial and are a small business in South Carolina. Great buying experience with them.

I have an Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid. But I think it would be way too firm for you as a light side sleeper. I bought it firm because I knew I wanted to add a latex topper. I have a Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid in another room (it used to be my main mattress until I went to a king) and it's really comfortable and cool. I have the luxury firm and I would say it's a true medium. You can add the cooling pillowtop for a little extra cushion. They're also great with returns and exchanges (I originally ordered the soft and it was too soft for me and it was easy to exchange).

r/MattressHate memory foam. Best medium–firm / firm option that won’t crater or sleep hot?

I have a 3in medium talalay topper from SleepEZ and I love it. I'm a heavier side and stomach sleeper and I usually hate lying on my back but this thing is comfortable in any position. With Avocado I feel like you're paying a brand premium for a meh product. Looking into SleepEZ. You can customize the bed based on your size and preferences. My current setup is the Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid with the SleepEZ 3 in medium talalay topper and it's perfect. I wanted a firm spring base and to be able to adjust my topper). The Sleep On Latex mattress is also awesome but I would go with the medium as it's already really firm and you'll need some give for your back curves. If you feel you need a topper, skip the SOL and get a medium talalay. And latex absolutely sleeps cooler than memory foam. I will never go back to memory foam after this. Latex for life! Lol

I'm a side sleeper 5'1 225lb. I have the Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid Cushion Firm and a 3in medium talalay latex topper from SleepEZ and it's amazing. The bed is super high quality and flippable. I did it this way to have a firm, durable base but a nice comfort layer. I'm hoping if I do have to replace anything, it will only be the topper. If you do latex, for your size, go medium. You'll sink too much into soft latex. Talalay is also much more conforming than Dunlop that tends to be more dense and has more push back that people sometimes dislike.

r/MattressIs it possible to find a traditional mattress? Not gel, not memory foam, just firm.

Not sure if you've picked something yet, but Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid is firm, simple, flippable, and solid. DLX classic is another to look at.

r/MattressCouple's king size choices - input appreciated!

You both might benefit from an internal split king (one mattress but the top comfort layer is split inside). DLX hybrid is one (they also have a latex hybrid). Nest also makes a memory foam (Nest Sparrow) or a latex (Nest Owl). These are nice because the quilted top unzips and the comfort layer can be exchanged or replaced down the road and you can each dial in the exact comfort and support that you need. You can even put memory foam on one side and latex on the other. There are options which is great. I have a Nest Owl in medium in one room and it's very comfortable. I've tried all the Winkbeds in store and I feel like they are just meh. I don't like the materials they use. The luxury firm is pretty firm and you will almost definitely find it too firm as a lightweight side sleeper. I'm shorter and heavier than you and I thought it was like a brick with a quilted top. The soft version was much more comfortable but your partner will find it to be too soft. In another room, I have an Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid Cushion Firm and a 3in medium talalay topper and it's very supportive with cushion for side sleeping. They also have the Sleep Duo (I think that's the name) where you get the base and choose the top comfort layer which can be replaced in the future without having to replace the whole mattress. They are a small business and have excellent customer service. They're so nice! They even invited me to come to the factory next time I'm in town and they would give me a tour. With that said, buying in store is almost more of a crap shoot than finding something online that would suit you. You can try them in store and still not like it when you actually sleep on it and you're stuck paying fees and you still have to use the credit to buy something from the same store where you may not have liked anything else. If you buy online, you get to try it and the majority of brands allow free returns, so there's little to no risk. There are also showrooms around that carry the most popular online brands to try out in person before you order them (check your area).

Check out the Engineered Sleep Classic 12 in Hybrid. I just got it and it's pretty close to those specs and very comfortable. You can give them a call and they're super helpful and I believe they can even custom make the layers for you. I paid $1200 for a king so a queen should be right in your price range.

Today Mattress by Engineered Sleep Origin Adapt Hybrid Tuft & Needle from Costco (they also have other inexpensive mattresses). Siena foam or hybrid (this is the least expensive of the bunch here).

I don't but I do have a twin all foam in my office as sort of a day bed and it's pretty decent quality for the price. I didn't want to spend much because I just wanted something to lay on and read or have an extra bed for more guests. It's a bit firm but a couple people have slept on it and said it was comfortable. I imagine the hybrid should be pretty good. It does look like it's on the firmer side of medium. You get 6 months to try it out so if you don't like it, you can get your money back. Most places will let you donate to someone you know instead of having it picked up, if you ask. If you can swing the extra for the Today mattress, it's probably worth it because they make great quality stuff and stand behind their products. I have their Classic Hybrid and it's really nice sturdy quality and their customer service is great, and they're a small business in SC. If you call them, you can ask if they have any additional discounts and they can probably help you out. The longevity of it will likely be better than the Siena.

Engineered Mattress Company makes one that holds 900 pounds. Solid mattress. I have it. There's also Helix, Titan, Saatva HD, Plank. You may also try Sleep on Latex if you want to try latex. They have great latex toppers and beds. I personally like to buy and firm as possible then dress it up with toppers because it's more flexible, that's why I went with Engineered Mattress. Their 12 inch classic is ultra firm and made from thicker, more solid coils with heavy duty coils on edges for edge support, and I added a topper for comfort.

I got the classic flippable mattress and put a 2” latex topper on it. I like it. It’s springy and just an overall great sleep. More affordable this way for me.

r/MattressBest box mattress that will give you 5* luxury hotel vibes with no chemical odor?

In terms of cooling: Springs and natural fibers will be the coolest, but most people don't like to sleep on a mattress that is almost entirely springs. If you do, I have the Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid in Simple Firm, which I use as a a base for toppers. Otherwise, a spring-and-foam hybrid will be cooler. A foam which you sink into less will feel cooler than a soft foam you sink into more. Latex feels more temperature neutral to me than other foams because of the "on top" feel but it also does not work for me as a top layer because of the pushback feel. Many people find a thin wool topper helps disperse heat. Using thinner breathable natural fibers for bedding also helps. But really nothing "cooling" actually cools throughout the night. Stuff that feels cool to the touch falling asleep will not actually stay that way. What you want is materials that will be closer to temperature neutral, hence the use of natural and breathable materials. If your partner sweats a lot, a fan might be the best option. In terms of odor, pretty much all polyfoams will smell at least a little on unboxing due to the use of solvents during manufacturing. And usually box mattresses get boxed up pretty quick after manufacturing. I've been able to get rid of them by airing them for 24 hours in a room with a fan and open window before using. Latex also smells, but to me it's light and pleasant, and is very low on VOCs.

I always intended it as a base for toppers since it's basically just springs, and I have an autoimmune disease that means my joints need a lot of padding. I think more average people would do fine with 2 or 3 inches of soft or medium latex. 4 inches of comfort layer foam is a pretty normal mattress construction.

r/MattressMattress for side sleepers with back pain: what finally worked for you?

I bought the softer firm they have and it’s good so far. A guy in a post went to the factory and met the family that makes them. The suggestion from the guys that make it was better to get a firmer mattress and add layers to soften it with toppers since you can’t make a soft mattress firmer.

I have had quite a few mattress including the Saatva. So after another failed mattress I did some digging and came across Engineered Sleep. I bought the cush firm after seeing positive posts. I’m a side stomach sleeper and always have every mattress fail on hip area. I’m only on third night but woke up with no pain. The mattress is old school flippable, they use a 14 gauge coil and you can tell it’s going to hold for a while. Has a slight bounce when you turn. Scan Reddit you can see what folks say about it.

r/BedroomBuildLessons From Hunting a Budget Hybrid Mattress
about 2 months ago

Some brands really do make a noticeable difference. A firm Brooklyn Bedding, Glacier Sleep, Engineered Sleep, or DLX mattress can feel completely different from a firm Amazon, Nectar, DreamCloud, or other imported models, especially those that use lower-quality or lower-density foams. This is where a bit of research and education pays off. It’s not just about how a mattress feels during the first month; it’s about how it performs over time. Mattress build and construction, material quality, foam density, and overall design all influence long-term comfort and support. So, while trying mattresses in-store or taking advantage of trial periods is helpful, understanding what’s inside the mattress can save you from disappointment later. A mattress that maintains its firmness and support over years is worth a little extra attention upfront. Of course to address your question of balancing budget, firmness and comfort may depend on what you consider "budget." Once a budget range is established, age, height and weight along with sleep position, that is when you can move on to an educated way to select your mattress.
