I just bought it! It seems to be a truly legit company with great customer service, and quality beds. I also love that it’s flippable! Thank you so much for the rec!
I bought a latex mattress from Sleep EZ 10 years ago. I also wanted a bed that was not toxic. Unfortunately, timing was such that I wasn't home long enough to get the full mattress experience during the trial period; so I was stuck with an expensive mattress. I am 5'3" 115#, and they suggested my comfort level would be bottom firm Dunlop, middle medium Dunlop, and top soft Talalay. It wasn't comfortable, not supportive, and back pain ensued. In the last 10 years, I've tried numerous toppers that helped somewhat. I finally put the firm on top with another topper. Back pain was always an issue, along with tossing and turning. Last November, we stayed in an Airbnb for 6 weeks. I couldn't believe how well I slept, on my side, all night long. The mattress was made in Indonesia (yes, it had fiberglass). It had an inner spring unit with a foam pad, and the support was stellar. After finding that I could be pain-free, I started looking for a mattress. I tried the Helix Midnight Core, but my hips sank and caused severe back and sciatic pain. I had to sleep on the couch to get any sleep. While searching online, I found Engineered Sleep. Customer service was awesome! They recommended the 12" Classic Hybrid affordable mattress in the cushion-firm, and expedited the delivery date as I was so miserable. The mattress expanded quickly to shape with no off-gassing. This mattress has alleviated the back pain, and sleeping for 7-8 hours is something that I haven't had the luxury of for many years. I am 70 years old and am grateful to have stumbled across this mattress maker. I recommend you give them a call and speak to them. You have nothing to lose, as they also have a trial period. How firm do you like your mattress? I have 2 Engineered Sleep classic hybrid 12" mattresses in extra firm. They're a 10/10 firmness which is exactly what my wife and I want in a mattress. It's a hybrid of 50ild foam & 14.75 gauge springs. It has an organic cotton topper, great edge support (only in the extra firm mattress), and is flippable. Fantastic customer support too.
Engineered Sleep classic hybrid in extra firm is a great choice as well.
Love my Engineered Sleep mattress. My husband and I compliment it every night.
We have the classic hybrid in extra firm. I did a bunch of research as my husband has complained forever that our mattresses have never been firm enough for him. We have been sleeping on it for two months. Their customer service is fantastic too.
Most people think they need super soft for side sleeping but that's actually not quite right. You want something in that medium to medium-soft range (like 5-6 on the firmness scale). Too soft and your hips sink in way too much, your spine gets out of alignment, and you get MORE hip pain. It's not just about overall firmness. You need to look for something that's just RIGHT with decent pressure relief in the comfort layers (like 3" of responsive foam) but with good support down under. You want to sink IN enough to cradle your hips and shoulders, but not sink DOWN so far. Sometimes hip pain for side sleepers is actually from a mattress that's TOO soft, not too firm. Your hips are the heaviest part of your body, so if they're sinking too deep, it puts stress on everything.
It only comes in one firmness level, and it feels like a true medium-firm. I’d rate it around 5.5-6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
From the ones I’ve tested, I’d suggest the Helix Dawn (they have Core, Luxe, and Elite versions, so choose the one that fits your budget) or the Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid Mattress in 12". Both mattresses come with reinforced edges and are rated 8 to 10 out of 10 on the firmness scale. They’re also very transparent about the materials used in their mattress construction, and I trust them enough.
After a bunch of research I just bought an Engineered Sleep Classic and am really happy with it. Very good customer service and they can help give recommendations. They are also willing to customize by request.
Check out Engineered Sleep. I have the Classic Hybrid Cushion Firm and it's about an 8 on the firm scale. It's more like a traditional spring mattress than the modern "hybrid" in that it's mostly coils with a couple inches of polyfoam and a soft cotton cover on top. Really high quality and it's flippable (the same on both sides). They also have the Duo mattress that you can swap the comfort layer on. The guys that own and run it are so nice and very helpful. If you give them a call they will get you the right product and might even be able to make some custom adjustments for you. They also have a 100 day trial and are a small business in South Carolina. Great buying experience with them.
I have an Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid. But I think it would be way too firm for you as a light side sleeper. I bought it firm because I knew I wanted to add a latex topper. I have a Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid in another room (it used to be my main mattress until I went to a king) and it's really comfortable and cool. I have the luxury firm and I would say it's a true medium. You can add the cooling pillowtop for a little extra cushion. They're also great with returns and exchanges (I originally ordered the soft and it was too soft for me and it was easy to exchange).
I have a 3in medium talalay topper from SleepEZ and I love it. I'm a heavier side and stomach sleeper and I usually hate lying on my back but this thing is comfortable in any position. With Avocado I feel like you're paying a brand premium for a meh product. Looking into SleepEZ. You can customize the bed based on your size and preferences. My current setup is the Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid with the SleepEZ 3 in medium talalay topper and it's perfect. I wanted a firm spring base and to be able to adjust my topper). The Sleep On Latex mattress is also awesome but I would go with the medium as it's already really firm and you'll need some give for your back curves. If you feel you need a topper, skip the SOL and get a medium talalay. And latex absolutely sleeps cooler than memory foam. I will never go back to memory foam after this. Latex for life! Lol
I'm a side sleeper 5'1 225lb. I have the Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid Cushion Firm and a 3in medium talalay latex topper from SleepEZ and it's amazing. The bed is super high quality and flippable. I did it this way to have a firm, durable base but a nice comfort layer. I'm hoping if I do have to replace anything, it will only be the topper. If you do latex, for your size, go medium. You'll sink too much into soft latex. Talalay is also much more conforming than Dunlop that tends to be more dense and has more push back that people sometimes dislike.
Not sure if you've picked something yet, but Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid is firm, simple, flippable, and solid. DLX classic is another to look at.
You both might benefit from an internal split king (one mattress but the top comfort layer is split inside). DLX hybrid is one (they also have a latex hybrid). Nest also makes a memory foam (Nest Sparrow) or a latex (Nest Owl). These are nice because the quilted top unzips and the comfort layer can be exchanged or replaced down the road and you can each dial in the exact comfort and support that you need. You can even put memory foam on one side and latex on the other. There are options which is great. I have a Nest Owl in medium in one room and it's very comfortable. I've tried all the Winkbeds in store and I feel like they are just meh. I don't like the materials they use. The luxury firm is pretty firm and you will almost definitely find it too firm as a lightweight side sleeper. I'm shorter and heavier than you and I thought it was like a brick with a quilted top. The soft version was much more comfortable but your partner will find it to be too soft. In another room, I have an Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid Cushion Firm and a 3in medium talalay topper and it's very supportive with cushion for side sleeping. They also have the Sleep Duo (I think that's the name) where you get the base and choose the top comfort layer which can be replaced in the future without having to replace the whole mattress. They are a small business and have excellent customer service. They're so nice! They even invited me to come to the factory next time I'm in town and they would give me a tour. With that said, buying in store is almost more of a crap shoot than finding something online that would suit you. You can try them in store and still not like it when you actually sleep on it and you're stuck paying fees and you still have to use the credit to buy something from the same store where you may not have liked anything else. If you buy online, you get to try it and the majority of brands allow free returns, so there's little to no risk. There are also showrooms around that carry the most popular online brands to try out in person before you order them (check your area).
Check out the Engineered Sleep Classic 12 in Hybrid. I just got it and it's pretty close to those specs and very comfortable. You can give them a call and they're super helpful and I believe they can even custom make the layers for you. I paid $1200 for a king so a queen should be right in your price range.
Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid is firm and just a tad above your budget, but I don't believe they charge tax (they didn't when I ordered) you can also call them and see if they are offering any additional discounts. Great company with a great product that they stand behind. I have the cushion firm and it's about an 8/10 but their extra firm is said to be 10/10 firmness. It's also flippable.
You're welcome! I'm 5'1 225lb and feel it gives great support. I added a latex topper because I'm a side sleeper but I wanted a solid firm mattress that I could add a topper to and change as needed and it was exactly what I was looking for. I think you'll be pleased with it. Also very little smell/off gassing. Just a new smell, not that make you choke paint smell some memory foam beds have. Another thing I liked about it vs other BIAB options, is that they flattened and rolled in the long way and didn't fold it in half first. I think this helps keep the shape of the coils a bit better since coils are meant to be compressed but not necessarily folded in half. Best wishes with it! Do report back!
Look into DLX Classic mattresses. They're flippable, traditional style mattresses and a small business. Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid is another option - also flippable and a traditional style mattress. Another small business with excellent customer service. I have this one in the cushion firm in my guest room and it's a great mattress and very well made.
Today Mattress by Engineered Sleep Origin Adapt Hybrid Tuft & Needle from Costco (they also have other inexpensive mattresses). Siena foam or hybrid (this is the least expensive of the bunch here).
I don't but I do have a twin all foam in my office as sort of a day bed and it's pretty decent quality for the price. I didn't want to spend much because I just wanted something to lay on and read or have an extra bed for more guests. It's a bit firm but a couple people have slept on it and said it was comfortable. I imagine the hybrid should be pretty good. It does look like it's on the firmer side of medium. You get 6 months to try it out so if you don't like it, you can get your money back. Most places will let you donate to someone you know instead of having it picked up, if you ask. If you can swing the extra for the Today mattress, it's probably worth it because they make great quality stuff and stand behind their products. I have their Classic Hybrid and it's really nice sturdy quality and their customer service is great, and they're a small business in SC. If you call them, you can ask if they have any additional discounts and they can probably help you out. The longevity of it will likely be better than the Siena.
