I got a hybrid from Engineered Sleep. Coils on bottom for the support layer. I asked them to construct a comfort layer of 2” memory foam with 2” latex on top. The memory foam provides good pressure relief and the latex on top prevents the sinking feeling.
I recently replaced a 20 year old tempurpedic with a duo memory plus with adjustable base from engineered sleep. I got the king bed but did the split king base (the sides are coordinated with the remote) to allow for extra weight. (Plus sized sleepers) I did their comfort exchange, swapping out the latex/memory foam topper for another one (2 types of foam that they recommended). The engineered sleep folks are very knowledgeable and helpful if you reach out to them. I am very happy with it.
I suggest checking out engineered sleep. They are super responsive via text and phone and very knowledgeable. They helped me pick the duo memory plus (which comes in 2 parts — coils with sifter and firmer side plus a 2 or 4 inch topper). The bed is design so you can replace the topper without also having to replace the coils. They also offer a comfort exchange if you find you need a different topper and will help you figure out what you really need (I did this). I also have their adjustable base, which I like. I am a plus sized side sleeper.
Check out the duo mattresses from engineered sleep. I have the memory plus (after 20 years of a tempupedic). There is a soft side and a firmer side to the coil base plus a topper (latex and memory foam). When I had the soft side up, I was definitely cradled in the mattress and it felt great. I ended up flipping it (with help—I have a king and it’s heavy) to the firmer side because it was a little too soft for me (plus sized sleeper). The folks there are super helpful and knowledgeable—very responsive to calls/texts. (On the firmer side, the latex had a bit too much pushback for me so they made me a topper with a different foam plus memory foam as a comfort exchange.)
The Big Fig classic is too firm but if you add the microcoil topper, it’s very cozy. Their bases are really solid and can handle extra weight. We have one of those and engineered sleep duo memory plus. If you get an adjustable base that’s not from big fig, make sure to do the weight calculations. For the duo bed in a king, we got 2 xl twin bases to support the weight of the people plus heavy mattress plus our dogs.
Check out Engineered Sleep. They are really responsive and knowledgeable and can help you pick a bed out. I have their Memory Duo plus.
We are plus size sleepers and have the original big fig and I think it’s too firm (side sleeper) but my husband (back sleeper) likes it. We added the microcoil topper and then I thought it was very comfy but it made the bed too high for our dogs to jump on and off (the mattress is on the big fig adjustable base, which is pretty high—they also have a non adjustable base, which looks solid). Also, You might want to talk to the folks at engineered sleep—they are really responsive and helpful and knowledgeable. I really like our memory duo plus (I sleep on the firmer side of the base, which has a softer and a firmer side, with the topper). It’s probably a medium in firmness and it’s made my back and hip pain much less noticeable. I will say it is a very heavy bed so with back problems you would likely need someone to help set it up and help adjust it if you need to flip the base or swap the topper in a comfort exchange. I also have their adjustable base and it’s much lower to the ground (you can choose a leg height). They also have a couple of more standard hybrid options that others have commented on.
We have a big fig, what they are calling the classic now, I think. It’s very firm but so perfectly cozy when you add the microcoil topper. It’s defined for heavy people so I think you’d need the topper to be comfortable. The only issue with the topper was that it slid around a bit snd adds a couple inches, so we took it off —bed was too high for the sofa to jump on. You may want to get their base too—very sturdy! Another suggestion is to talk to the folks at engineered sleep about their duo beds. They come in 2 parts—a coil section that has soft and firm sides plus a 2 or 4 inch topper. That would let you customize the firmness level and feel. We also have a duo memory plus but they have options without memory foam. Super responsive and knowledgeable if you can or text them.
They are not inexpensive but sometimes they have 25 percent off if you sign up for their texts. I would check their website. I like engineered sleep, which can also work for plus sized sleepers. We have one of their duo mattresses but they have more affordable options—look at their today and classic mattresses. If you look into them, I’d call or text them with questions. They are really knowledgeable and helpful and will tell you if they think something will work for you.
Update: So we tried the Bedjet with their recommended cloud sheets, and that made sleeping on the Sealy Posturepedic tolerable. If you don't move around in your sleep, it works pretty well to keep the air flowing under the blanket, and you stay very comfortable. If you DO move around, and the top sheet doesn't stay put, or the air escapes, you'll wake up hot, or just your feet will get uncomfortably cold. To be clear, when it works, it is quite nice. But at $1300, (nearly the price of a new mattress), we decided it was not a very good value for it to only work some of the time, so we returned it. If it were $4-500, we probably would have kept it. We ordered the Nolah Evolution in Luxury Firm, which the company claims uses special non-memory foam material that breathes exceptionally. But after trying it out, it was actually pretty similar as far as getting hot. Just more claims of "cooling" that last 20 minutes, then turn into a heater. We then ordered the Engineered Sleep Duo Latex mattress, and found that it is the best we have tried, and we no longer wake up in a pool of sweat. The split design should allow it to last longer than a conventional one-piece mattress. We have finally gotten restful sleep after the nightmare of mattress shopping and are very happy with our purchase. Additionally, the bedroom temperature remains 72-74, and we are quite comfortable. We also ordered a set of 100% cotton sheets and blankets, which also made a difference. The breathability is quite obvious. Mattress Firm sold us $170 "cooling sheets" when they sold us the Sealy mattress, but apparently, they also hold the heat and didn't help the issue.
I’m in Canada. Did a whole bunch of research starting holiday season last year. Ended up ordering the Duo Latex Plus from Engineered Sleep back in April. Paid 25% tariffs, fees, duties and all to import into Canada from the US. No regrets.
Got one because of the positive feedback on their mattresses and customer service in r/mattress. They weren’t wrong, I love it.
I've had the Duo Latex Plus for a couple months now and absolutely love it. I am a lightweight side/back sleeper (mostly side) and this is the most comfortable bed I've ever had. It does really depend on individual preferences for softness, but I'm happy. I also bought the adjustable bed frame and wish I'd done that years ago.
I still love the mattress and the adjustable frame. There aren't really traditional springs involved and I haven't had any problem using the mattress with the adjustable frame.
I purchased from engineered sleep and they’ve been incredible! I have MS and suffer from back pain, especially when waking. I started with the duo latex plus, that didn’t help so they told me to give the latex plus topper to my sister (who’s sleeping on it wonderfully! And will be buying from them in the future) and sent me the regular latex topper, also no help. They sent me a new memory foam base, still not working for my back so they sent a new 4lb memory foam topper which has been great but still not perfect so trying out that new topper with the latex or memory foam base. Working with them has been wonderful and it feels like they really are trying to help me wake pain free, it’s awesome!
