**Update – Duo Lift First Impressions (Petite Side Sleeper, Custom Build)** **TL;DR:** 90 lb side sleeper here. Got a custom Duo Lift with 6" coils and the standard topper. It’s firm but comfy — no soreness as of now, no weird smells (unless you count sniffing really hard for a bit of wool). Edge support is solid, and the topper stays put like it’s glued down. Might swap in the 4" Talalay topper later if I start getting sore or feel this topper isn’t cutting it. Following up like a few others here now that I’ve had a few nights on my new Duo Lift! I’m a 90 lb side sleeper and had mine custom made with 6" coils from their Classic Hybrid (instead of the standard 8") to make it a little less firm. The topper is their standard one for now (not the latex), and the full setup came to about 13" tall — which works well on my adjustable base which was a concern of mine from previous mattress experience. First reaction? It’s a very pretty mattress — I almost didn’t want to cover it. And more importantly, it feels surprisingly good! It’s definitely on the firm side (which I don't usually like) but has a little give and feels supportive in a way that doesn’t leave me sore (yet). I was kind of expecting to wake up stiff the first night, but that didn’t happen at all (minus from taking down my old mattress and putting this one up haha). If I try really hard, I can pick up a faint wool scent (which they said was normal & doesn't bother me), but there was *zero* chemical smell or off-gassing. That’s a huge deal for me — I’m extremely sensitive to smells, and this one was a relief after past bad experiences (looking at you, Tempurpedic). The edge support feels solid, and the topper doesn’t slide around at all thanks to this grippy fabric — I joked that it could hold Velcro pajamas in place. Time will tell if I decide to swap the topper out for the 4" Talalay latex one as I need to give it at least 30 days I think, but overall, I’m really happy with the quality, feel, and customer service so far. Will update again after a bit more sleep or if I decide to do the comfort exchange! Original Post below: Hoping to end my mattress search soon. I’m going cross eyed from looking for reviews from others in my shoes. I am now looking at Engineered Sleep for a few reasons. One is the customer service has been amazing with all the questions I’ve asked. It’s almost half the price of what I was looking at and it seems like a very well-built mattress. What I’m not sure about and the reason I’m hesitating is I cannot try the mattresses first to see if I think they would work. (I’ve laid on a lot and only found a few to be comfortable). Also, I can’t open the main mattress up to change layers if necessary. I’m a petite side sleeper (90lbs) who prefers a plusher mattress and does not like memory foam. I was hoping to go with a no foam (other than latex) type of mattress. ES has both the Duo Latex Plus and The Duo Lift and of course I’m more drawn to the Duo Lift without the memory foam or other foams and with the wool FR. I have been told I could try it as is and do a comfort exchange for the 4” Talalay topper or just get it with the 4” Talalay topper to begin with. I know this is a firm mattress and I’m not sure how well the topper would work for softening it to my liking. I have read some reviews on both, but there aren’t a lot on the Duo Lift, especially for someone my size. I have read some on the Duo Latex Plus that say it’s still pretty firm but unsure what topper folks had. I thank those who have responded to some of my questions about these already. I know the Duo Latex Plus with the 4” Talalay topper would be my best bet, but it has foam in it and no wool. Oh, and I was also hoping to stick with a 12” high mattress (or less). These are both 14” or more. I have an adjustable base and even though these would work, it still worries me a little bit. Looking for opinions from other petite side sleepers who have tried one or both mattresses. Has anyone bought the Duo Lift but had layers inside it adjusted to fit their needs? Thanks!
**Update:** Finally got my custom Duo Lift (with 6" coils)! Posted a full update with first impressions — how it feels, smells (spoiler: barely at all), and whether I’m sore (I’m not). See Original post above! So glad those of us on here who bought an ES are happy so far! Yeah! I think I FINALLY found my perfect mattress!
I finally ordered the duo lift with a small customization, and will report back after I get it and sleep on it. There are a couple of us in this thread that ordered in the last few days, two different mattresses, so we can both report back and give our take on how we like our choices.
Oh interesting. Thank you for replying back. Not only for me but others who were interested as well. Looks like we definitely went with different firmness's. I went ahead and ordered the Duo Lift because the sale was ending today, & I had my mind set on that for a while. I am getting a softer spring put in it so here's hoping it will work for me. If the topper that comes with it doesn't work, I can order the 4" Talalay one. I'm also going to get a wool cover. I want one that won't change the feel of the mattress much if at all so now the search for that (hopefully won't take near as long). I'm excited and hope this ends my mattress search! I have in my mind I'm determined to make this work no matter what, but I tend to have grand ideas and then for some reason things don't end up as great as I expect LOL. Hoping it'll be different with this mattress. I will report back after I get and sleep on my new mattress!! :)
Oh I posted an update above but maybe it's not showing. I'm really liking it so far. It's surprisingly firm and giving at the same time if that even makes sense. I never thought I could like something this firm, but the topper has a cushy give to it that's hard to describe. I have yet to wake up sore, and I feel like I'm sleeping on my back more which I had been wanting to do. Way different from the 20+ year old select comfort mattress I had. This one is far more supportive and cooler too. The jury is still out on whether I will need to exchange the topper for something a bit softer. I cannot believe I bought a mattress without trying it but apparently that's exactly what I should've done a long time ago. I think I can finally say my search is over. I will do another update in another month or so as well. I want to be able to help others in my shoes if possible.
We are on day 2 of our Duo Lift Mattress and it’s more comfortable than our Ikea mattress but maybe too soft. Very supportive and we did flip the base to the more firm side. We have 28 more days to see how it feels before making a comfort change decision.
We went with Engineered Sleep Duo with a 4" latex topper, because it's designed for separate toppers and we can change it later where the Sleep on Latex the topper is built in. We really liked that because Talalay is softer and may not last as long as the coils do, also changing out the toppers sounds really helpful for my significant other who some months likes the supportive latex but then wants the sinking in feeling like memory foam gives (health stuff). SleepEZ was also a good one to look at but it has shorter coils (6 vs 8) than SOL does
for me, avoiding foam was key. that included latex. look at woolroom mattresses or some naturepedic mattresses. i have the eos classic latex free and love it. there is also one byu engineered sleep... duo hybrid that has a lot going on but no foam! engineered sleep makes the woolroom matteresses as i understand. no foam=cooler. no foam=longer lasting.
I got the ES Duo, which they don't make anymore, but would be closest to the Latex Plus Duo Cling. I like it a lot.
Check out Engineered Sleep. I have the Classic Hybrid Cushion Firm and it's about an 8 on the firm scale. It's more like a traditional spring mattress than the modern "hybrid" in that it's mostly coils with a couple inches of polyfoam and a soft cotton cover on top. Really high quality and it's flippable (the same on both sides). They also have the Duo mattress that you can swap the comfort layer on. The guys that own and run it are so nice and very helpful. If you give them a call they will get you the right product and might even be able to make some custom adjustments for you. They also have a 100 day trial and are a small business in South Carolina. Great buying experience with them.
My recent birch natural mattress was a disaster. It was so poorly made and it was so annoying to have to pay $100 to dispose of their poorly made mattress, it wasn’t even the correct size! I would avoid them at all costs. We got an engineered sleep mattress (the duo) to replace it with and it’s amazing so far!
I have had quite a few mattress including the Saatva. So after another failed mattress I did some digging and came across Engineered Sleep. I bought the cush firm after seeing positive posts. I’m a side stomach sleeper and always have every mattress fail on hip area. I’m only on third night but woke up with no pain. The mattress is old school flippable, they use a 14 gauge coil and you can tell it’s going to hold for a while. Has a slight bounce when you turn. Scan Reddit you can see what folks say about it.
Some brands really do make a noticeable difference. A firm Brooklyn Bedding, Glacier Sleep, Engineered Sleep, or DLX mattress can feel completely different from a firm Amazon, Nectar, DreamCloud, or other imported models, especially those that use lower-quality or lower-density foams. This is where a bit of research and education pays off. It’s not just about how a mattress feels during the first month; it’s about how it performs over time. Mattress build and construction, material quality, foam density, and overall design all influence long-term comfort and support. So, while trying mattresses in-store or taking advantage of trial periods is helpful, understanding what’s inside the mattress can save you from disappointment later. A mattress that maintains its firmness and support over years is worth a little extra attention upfront. Of course to address your question of balancing budget, firmness and comfort may depend on what you consider "budget." Once a budget range is established, age, height and weight along with sleep position, that is when you can move on to an educated way to select your mattress.
Engineered Sleep is great!
