I bought a latex mattress from Sleep EZ 10 years ago. I also wanted a bed that was not toxic. Unfortunately, timing was such that I wasn't home long enough to get the full mattress experience during the trial period; so I was stuck with an expensive mattress. I am 5'3" 115#, and they suggested my comfort level would be bottom firm Dunlop, middle medium Dunlop, and top soft Talalay. It wasn't comfortable, not supportive, and back pain ensued. In the last 10 years, I've tried numerous toppers that helped somewhat. I finally put the firm on top with another topper. Back pain was always an issue, along with tossing and turning. Last November, we stayed in an Airbnb for 6 weeks. I couldn't believe how well I slept, on my side, all night long. The mattress was made in Indonesia (yes, it had fiberglass). It had an inner spring unit with a foam pad, and the support was stellar. After finding that I could be pain-free, I started looking for a mattress. I tried the Helix Midnight Core, but my hips sank and caused severe back and sciatic pain. I had to sleep on the couch to get any sleep. While searching online, I found Engineered Sleep. Customer service was awesome! They recommended the 12" Classic Hybrid affordable mattress in the cushion-firm, and expedited the delivery date as I was so miserable. The mattress expanded quickly to shape with no off-gassing. This mattress has alleviated the back pain, and sleeping for 7-8 hours is something that I haven't had the luxury of for many years. I am 70 years old and am grateful to have stumbled across this mattress maker. I recommend you give them a call and speak to them. You have nothing to lose, as they also have a trial period. If you want good support without spending like crazy, look at hybrid builds that mix foam and coils, they tend to last longer and breathe better than cheap all-foam. The Helix Midnight in the Core Collection is a good example, it’s medium feel so it won’t dig into your hips and shoulders, and the coils help keep you from bottoming out over time.
If you’re a side sleeper waking up stiff, the shoulder and hip zones are usually the failure point, not overall firmness. The Helix Midnight Luxe gets mentioned a lot because it uses zoned coils to hold the midsection steady while letting the pillow top compress. It’s a medium feel, so you get surface comfort without that stuck, slow foam response. I won’t say it fixes every back, but from a construction standpoint it’s one of the safer bets in that price range.
Hybrids usually win for side sleepers who run hot or don't like feeling stuck. All-foam can work if you want maximum pressure relief and don't mind less bounce, but they tend to trap more heat and lose their shape faster. As for toppers, they can help a too firm mattress by adding a comfort layer but they won't fix a mattress that's already breaking down or fundamentally wrong for you. Try looking at Helix Midnight, tends to do well for a lot of side sleepers and it's a hybrid. imo the medium feel is actually legitimately medium. Your shoulder can sink in enough to relieve pressure. Another one is the leesa sapira hybrid chill
your friend is right, bed-in-a-box is exactly what you want for a 3rd flr apartment. The mattress arrives compressed and it expands on its own over a few hrs when u cut the plastic. You don't have to hire movers, but if you have neighbor or friend you can ask for 10 minutes of help to get the box up the staircase, it makes difference. The box isa lil bit awkward more than it is heavy lol. Anyway, Look for a hybrid. All-foam beds tend to retain more heat, hybrids run cooler. I'd reco looking at helix midnight, its a good all-around hybrid and excellent zoned support
a quality mattresses addresses something more fundamental than any gadget can. A solid mid-range mattress from a brand with a good trial period is often all it takes like Helix Midnight or Leesa Sapira Hybrid.
We’ve been sleeping on a king sized Helix for 9 years, with each side customized just for our preferences (I like a very squishy bed and my husband wants to sleep on a plank of wood), and it’s still in great shape. Easily the best mattress I have ever slept on. We tried a Tempur-pedic and absolutely hated it. Helix mattresses have a unique build, a high density foam foundation topped with a specially designed innerspring layer and then a thick layer of memory foam on top of that. I think that’s what keeps it from eventually sagging in the middle. Ours still feels like it did the day we received it, for real. It doesn’t cause back pain, it fixes back pain! When we have to sleep elsewhere for a few nights for trips, we are always dying to get back to our house so we can sleep on that mattress so our backs will stop hurting. I think they have a trial period with the right to return it if it doesn’t work for you. Whatever you end up going with, I hope you manage to find a good mattress. Good luck!
If I needed a new mattress now, I’d look for a hybrid with good airflow and some kind of zoned support. Foam-only beds can feel nice at first, but they don’t always hold up well and they can trap heat. With hip and shoulder pain, zoning really helps since it keeps your spine straight while letting those areas sink in a little. One brand that does this well is Helix. Their Midnight Luxe is built for side sleepers and has coils that are softer at the shoulders and firmer through the back. They even have an optional ErgoAlign foam layer if back pain is a concern. If cost is a factor, their Core line is more affordable but still uses the same hybrid design.
Copper infusion sounds nice on paper, but it’s not a magic AC unit. Most “cooling” foam still warms up once your body heat soaks i. If your current memory foam has a crater, that’s usually softer foams breaking down. I’d prioritize a simple hybrid, coils for airflow and support, then a thinner comfort layer on top. A solid option is the Helix Midnight. It's built for a lot of people's sleep profiles, and if you run hot, the GlacioTex cooling cover upgrade is the kind of thing you actually feel at the surface.
What made you decide on Helix? I’m torn right now between an avocado green medium pillow top, helix luxe midnight, & a beautyrest black series 2 medium PT I’d like to go avocado for the latex + natural materials’ durability, but I can’t deny the helix & beautyrest both felt more supportive while also somehow feeling softer 🙃
I just bought a helix midnight luxe, I like a firmer bed but not too stiff so hopefully that cozy pillow top helps. I hope you’re breaks in soon for you!
