The midnights are pretty soft still. A month ago we got a Helix Twilight Elite and it’s incredible.
I am a 230 pound side sleeper with back pain and a hip replacement. I tried both models today. I am still on trial and first started with the midnight elite, which was way too soft because of the memory foam which threw me out of alignment. I next tried the helix plus elite which was still too soft and had too much sinkage which threw me out of alignment; again because of the memory foam. Today I tried both the twilight and the dawn elite. The twilight elite was definitely firmer than both the midnight and plus, however, it still uses the memory foam, and I was still out of alignment sinking in too far. Surprisingly enough I landed on the dawn elite and I was in complete heaven. This mattress held my torso up perfectly, allowing me to relax, yet the memory foam cover, as well as the top comfort foam layers were enough for me to be comfortable on my side. I was completely in shock. My shoulder even felt OK as I laid there for 15 minutes. I was in total peace laying there amongst all the people around me. LOL the Dawn elite is more buoyant and will keep you lifted while having a slight cushion feeling on top…. minimal sinkage. This is my experience being a heavier side sleeper so it may be different for other people, but thought I would share. My dawn comfort layers will be arriving soon. ❤️
Hello- I have l4/l5 lumbar herniation (acute) that developed from a chronic few-year old bulge. & with some lingering term chronic stuff (slight misalignment leading to disc degeneration due to childhood injury) Vast majority of pain currently is in lower leg. But more chronically comes in the low back region. May have surgery soon - developments pending. In dire need of a new mattress. Tested some and here are some thoughts- Was looking at bear elite hybrid prior to this acute pain. But checking it out again I’m worried it’s too firm to really go to sleep easily. Also laying down on it made me sad it made me “feel” like there’s a problem with me, hahah. I still want to feel like I’m going into a nice cozy bed. I tried helix’s latex line, the birch elite hybrid and was pleasantly surprised. I have a tendency to sleep in the “mountain climber” position with one leg hiked up and I found this mattress supported that the most without needing a lot of additional pillow support on my leg. Although I hear the longevity of latex is poor. However it seems a lot of people here don’t like latex. Why is that? (Other than poor longevity?) I was under the impression it “holds” you the best? I also tried helix twilight elite hybrid and helix twilight luxe hybrid. Both were good. I think twilight elite is better but the mattress itself is so physically massive it’s really off putting. Seems like a task to get in and out of. Was looking at Saatva rx, saatva firm and saatva latex. All were good but when I think of the mattress i tried, they don’t leave a strong impression on my memory. Very flexible on price right now. But I’d like to stay in the $2800 USD And below. I’m willing ti invest in a good mattress.
I got a Helix twilight elite last week. So far my back feels amazing. I’m a side sleeper and it’s been amazing.
I'm only into the Helix about a week but so far it's too firm. I wake up with not only low back hurting (I'm used to that) but now upper back and shoulders. We tried the Puffy Lux and way too firm I'm debating between getting a replacement softer insert or trying a new mattess all together. I was looking at the Winkbed Soft, Nolah Evolution Soft or BB Thermobalance Elite or maybe even Sealy Posturepedic Brenham II (which I will look at the mattess store). I don't want to spend so much and then add a topper, otherwise I would have kept my old firm mattress
And it's funny bc we did lay on a Twilight Elite in a mattress store and it felt good but it was broken in. They also had the Plus but it felt softer I sure wish we had more options in our town to look. The guy who picked up our matters said Nectar and Dreamcloud biggest ones he picks up to return.
It's not a one size fits all (Medium for side and firm for back). It is seriously dependant on you and your conditions. What is most important is spinal alignment and comfort which can be achieved with a firm mattress with a good coils system for support, even if it has a padded type cover with a little bit of foam or natural material for just a bit of conformance. I would look for a hybrid with solid coils system support and a tight padded quilt top (not necessarily a big euro top although that is an option) Mattresses like the Sealy Elite series in Firm with quilt or padded tops and Helix Twilight Elite... The beauty of Helix Elite is the comfort layer is encased and easily swappable while keeping the solid coil support system. Good luck.
It's not about being bought so much as editor and writer bias. I really don't trust any review sites. Plus with mattresses being so subjective, you can really only try to get good quality and craftsmanship but the actual layers and materials are different for everyone. I had looked and tried so many and had created a spreadsheet...lol. my top 5 at the end of it all was : Helix Twilight Elite King Koil Natural Cascade Sealy Albany II Elite Diamond Mattress Black Diamond Vail SF Luxe Estate was up there as well and my budget pick was a BR World Class Level 3. I ended up purchasing the Black Diamond Vail. (Has their top of the line coil system). It is a flat pack model not a rolled up box model) I really wanted the Twilight Elite from Helix as it has a fully encased comfort layer (foam and micro coils) that is swappable for different feels. If we return this one (we are early in the trial) that is the one I will probably choose but this one feels very high quality and was $800 cheaper.
Lots of good choices of innerspring mattresses with a medium to medium firm set of comfort layers that aren't overdone with memory foam (I personally hate memory foam). If you want to spend a little money again, you could go with something like a Helix Twilight Elite. It is categorized as firm but also for side sleepers and the top comfort layer under the quilt is fully encased and swappable! That encased section that is swappable is simply a thin layer of foam above and below the micro coils and includes the micro coils. Start with Twilight, which I think would fit you best but if that feels a little too firm just ask for the free swap of that encased section to their Midnight version. And even years down the road if that section feels like it needs a swap, you can order just that section. Beyond that the Sealy Elite line has their best support system zones coils and you can get it in many different feels and top types. I prefer quilt tops rather than memory foam hybrid tops. I recently bought a Diamond Mattress and the model is the Black Diamond lux quilt top in firm called the Vail. It is flat packed, has their best coil system (series 9) and just a bit of foam in the top. It is a bit firm but they make a medium model as well.
I would prefer the Twilight in your situation over the Dawn. While they are both Firm rated, its about the positioning of the foams and micro coils and which ones are used and the Twilight I think would be just a bit more forgiving for Side sleepers than the Dawn would. When we were trying them all at a local dealer, Twilight was my favorite...(and that store's best seller).
Twilight Elite for you and never look back. If you find after 60 days that you want a bit firmer, you can swap just the encased comfort layer under the cover! That is what is great about their Elite Series.
Whether you get a hybrid (definition is Memory foam over coils) or a spring series (Traditional poly foams over coils with Quilt or euro top) is decision one. I personally hate the thick memory foam that slowly sinks in and traps you in the impression, but that is subjective and some like it. Decision 2 is firmness level and medium will be a good fit as the foams will be dense enough to comfort you without letting you sink to the coils while still providing the conformance you need on your side. Decision 3 will be budget based as the luxury models that are 15 or 16" thick with multiple layers of different foams and sometimes micro coils can get pretty pricey. Someone mentioned Helix Midnight Luxe and that is a good mattress for side sleepers and uses a fairly dense 4Lb foam which is good. Step up to the elite and you get a couple more inches of comfort layer and 7lb density foam which is really good. As well the Elite models come with a swappable fully encased comfort layer that you can swap down the road for a refresh or different feel. 3Z Brands is the parent company and makes a lot of the popular bed in a box brands out today (www.3zbrands.com). They are an American made company and make quality products. One of their brands, Brooklyn Bedding recently released a model called Thermobalance Elite which has both 3lb and 5lb foams and is getting good reviews. I was definitely going to buy 1 of 3 mattresses when I was doing all my research. 1. Helix Twilight Elite. 2. Sealy Posturepedic Elite Brenham II. 3. King Koil Natural Line Glacier. I went to a few stores several times and spent 20-30 minutes on them to the point the salespeople all knew me. Then I went to an independent store and ended up buying a Diamond Mattress Black Diamond Whirler. All the mattresses I looked at were not Hybrid by definition (Did not have the thick flat memory foam tops) and we're all luxury quilt top spring type mattresses. (People call them hybrids too but they are really not). Lots of good choices out there...
Mattresses are so subjective and every person is different. I can tell you I had a 6 month journey, visited at least 6 mattress stores and some of them 4 times. I had a top 5 list which included: Helix Elite Twilight Sealy Elite Brenham or Albany King Koil Natural line Sterns Lux Estate Then I went to a local store that is not a national brand and the salesman there listened to me and steered me to a brand I had not seen in the other stores - Diamond. Specifically the Black Diamond line. It was nice because it looked and felt the same quality as the others was $800 fell in the priceline of the middle of the others. I bought it and have only been on it for about 37 days. It was definitely firmer but has just started feeling a bit more like the showroom model. My wife and I just talked last night again about exchanging for a medium model but we both agreed that either our bodies are starting to adjust or it's getting better...we aren't sure yet. It's not perfect yet but definitely better. We love the looks and quality materials, it just exudes premium. We don't like the deep sink in and get trapped feeling of memory foam so we opted for the Luxury Quilt top model instead of the Hybrid Top model. We also opted for the Firm retail version called the Vail and if we exchange it will be for the same company and line but the medium model called the whistler. Really nice product. If you can find the Black Diamond in a store it will be an order and build and it will have their best coil system as opposed to the online version which is not different coil system. Retail version are not rolled and boxed they are delivered flat so they can put their strongest coils in them. All the mattresses I listed felt very premium and had quality materials. Sealy Elite has a great coil system, Helix Elite has incredible foams (8lb and 5lb) and the King Koil with its latex layers and micro coils was awesome. Good luck...
I would choose the Twilight from Helix. (Luxe or Elite)
Why have you not contacted Helix directly! You can swap that encased comfort layer under the zipper (Best Part of Elite Series!). Ask them to send you a "Twilight" comfort layer. The Helix Elite use some of the densest foams around so longevity should be good.
3Z brands out of Arizona make good mattresses for bed in a box options. The Helix Elite series is outstanding and can be had in all the different comfort feels. As well it has a fully encased comfort layer under the removable cover that can be swapped out without replacing the whole mattress. Has the standard 15 year warranty and then a prorated limited lifetime warranty. It is available to try at local brick and mortar stores, you just have to find them. I have three within a one hour drive that all had the luxe and elite series mattresses on the floor. They are a bit more expensive than some of the other brands made by the same company and it's due to the superior foams (higher density). If I was to buy a 3Z brands mattress it would probably be the Helix Elite.
