It is! Also if you are near an ikea you can test them out before buying, thats what we did. They have various models. They have a return policy if you arent happy with it too.
I have an IKEA Vagstranda firm, and it’s thankfully actually firm (it took me a journey through a lot of much more expensive mattresses to get here). I’m mostly a back sleeper who needs significant low back support, but I wouldn’t suggest firm for a side sleeper. It’s good now, but it took a few good months to get comfortable on the side. I would suggest however trying out the medium and the plush in-store, because IMO the medium was more a plush than a medium, and I would be concerned that the Vagstranda plush will have no support at all.
Anneland has memory foam, and all memory foam sinks. If you have the budget, go for a latex mattress which won’t sink and yet provide cushioning for a big person (but get the comfort right from the get go, because latex mattresses do not really break in, and there are various firmnesses of latex). If you don’t have the budget, go for a firm spring mattress. I have the firm IKEA Vangstranda and it is actually what I will call firm (I was surprised how soft most supposedly firm mattresses were, when I went mattress shopping). It probably won’t be the most comfortable at the get go but it does break in. I don’t know how long it will last for him though because I’m light, but for me it didn’t budge much. As an option, you can get the Vangstranda and add a 2in latex topper for cushioning.
I was about to recommend this!
Ikeas medium firmness mattresses are way too soft and dont provide support. You most likely need a firmer "core" with a softer top. Overall Ikea mattresses just arent that great. The best feeling one in the store for me is the VÅGSTRANDA Firm. Honestly, after herniating a disc the most pain free sleep I got while recovering was a 3.5" inflatable camping mat with a 2 inch memory foam topper. If you sleep on your side, place a firm pillow between your knees. Make sure its supporting your feet too. Also try placing a pillow behind your pelvis and back as well as hugging a pillow in front.
First of all, everyone is different and requires a mattresses designed for their body type and sleeping position, which is why there is a plethora of different options that different people find comfortable and supportive. Never said firmer is always better. firmer and supportive are two different things and it sounds like youre looking at it from a simplistic point of view (firm/soft). The most common issue people have with back pain in the mornings is having too soft a mattress without adequate support. This creates the inverted arching with the hips sinking putting pressure on the discs and straining ligaments of the spine. For back and stomach sleepers, too soft of a mattress does the same excessive arching. On your back? Butt sinks, accentuating the lumbar curavture. On your stomach? Paradoxically, the same thing. What's required is a supportive core of some sort (pocket coils being the better option) and pressure point relieving upper layers. Thanks for the downvote
Same. I tend to move around a lot and am restless. When I herniated a disc I was forced into back sleeping or strict side sleeping. Specifically, the pillow wedged behind me provided great support to slightly lean back on. Very relieving feeling. The front pillow kept me from rolling forward into my natural stomach/side hybrid sleeping with a leg up which is terrible for the spine. Honestly, I think all the pillows made me sleep more static, more comfortably and I slept through more. Anecdotally, I think the constant moving in our sleep is a sign that we arent comfortable and supported. If youre a side sleeper the biggest difference will be the pillow between the knees and ankles for side sleeping. For back sleeping, its the pillow under the knees/calves and a thin pillow behind your head so youre not cranking your head forward. The pillow is mostly to support your cervical spine and reduce point loading on your head against the mattress
IKEA Vagstranda. We've had ours about 5 years. It's brilliant.
Pretty heavy, it's proper sprung mattress not just foam. Dunno if that's what you want or not.
The IKEA Vagstranda is decent for the money. Lasts years. Firm is the way to go.
The January/February 2026 Consumer Reports has an extensive article about mattresses. My local library has it online so I didn't have to subscribe. While Consumer Reports is far from perfect, the article can at least help you narrow down your choices so you can decide what to try out in person and what to avoid. I started by looking at mattresses that achieved an overall score of at least 75. Then I narrowed it down by price. We looked at the mattresses with a score of at least 75 that cost $500 or less (queen), since there is no reason to pay more than $500 for a quality queen mattress. We did not want a pillowtop. We did not want foam. Organic was not a concern. These were the five that made the cut: • Siena Essential Premier Hybrid 82 ($424) Online only • Serta Classic Alden Medium Standard 79 ($499) Online only • Ikea Vagrstranda 77 ($499) In store and online • Signature Design by Ashley Chime 12" 75 ($330) No longer available • Serta Sleep to Go Hybrid 75 ($500) Online only Then I only wanted to buy a mattress that I could try out before purchasing, which excluded all the online mattress vendors. The lower priced mattresses are usually online only, even from brands that do sell other, higher-priced models, in mattress stores, department stores, or furniture stores. The exception is Ikea. We went to our local Ikea and they had the Vagstranda available to try in four different firmnesses: plush (soft), medium-firm, firm, and extra-firm. The soft (plush) was way too soft. The extra-firm was too hard. We ended up buying one queen Vagrstranda and one twin Vagrstranda in firm. I could have gone with medium firm as well. They delivered for $39 (and also pick up your old mattress, separately, for free (in California)). But the way the mattresses are vacuum packaged you could also fit one in an SUV. As you know, mattresses have enormous mark-ups and it's rare to go to a mattress store that is not having some sort of "incredible" sale. Ikea does occasionally have 20% off all mattresses, but not at this time.
Your post has nothing to do with r/SaaS Anyway, the solution is a double pocket spring mattress. I have a Vågstranda mattress from IKEA. Even when I weighed \~120kg and my wife \~41kg, she didn't feel me turning over at night, etc.
