I work for Hamuq (Canadian mattress company), I also spend way too much time talking about mattresses so I’ll just give you my honest take. You’re not imagining it, the old Kingsdown (especially Malbec-era builds) really were different. Talalay + natural fibers + robust coils gives that buoyant, weightless “cloud” feel that modern Beautyrest just doesn’t replicate. The edge roll-off you’re noticing on the Black is a common complaint. If you’re chasing that old Malbec feel, here’s what actually matters: * Talalay latex (not memory foam) * Zoned or hand-tied coils with strong edge support * Natural fiber layers (wool, horsehair, cotton) instead of thick foams * Minimal plush polyfoam, that’s what causes the “condensing” feel you hate Yes, handmade is still a real thing, but you have to be selective. Look at smaller regional or specialty manufacturers that still build with latex + fibers instead of foam stacks. Expect higher prices, but also better longevity and feel. If you want something modern but closer to that responsive, pressure-free sleep (without the mass-market mush), brands like ours at Hamuq are built around that same idea: strong coil support with responsive comfort layers so you float on the bed, not sink into it. Once you’ve slept on the good stuff, it’s hard to go back. Hope this helps!

After what felt like a 6 year losing streak in picking a mattress, I came across Kingdown. I purchased their “Malbec” mattress back in 2022 and long story short, it was life changing. Three months ago my husband and I bought a new house and decided to make the upgrade from a queen size to a king. It was the right move. My husband takes up too much space for us to truly be able to enjoy sleeping together on a cramped queen size mattress. Much to my dismay I have learned that the kingdown brand was acquired by private equity, their historic NC factory has been demolished in favor of overseas production and an “optimized omnichannel customer experience” and the excellent mattresses I came to love were now crap that Mattress Firm wouldn’t even sell anymore. I looked everywhere for a king size, kingsdown Malbec but it’s too far gone at this point. Our sales rep at mattress firm pointed us in the direction of the Beautyrest Black as a replacement, which we purchased for our primary bedroom, and our beloved Malbec is now in our guest room. The beautyrest black is alright, I can sleep on it without pain which is better than I can say for most other mattresses but the experience is far from similar to my experience on the Malbec. The latex in the Malbec responded for a more plush, weightless sleep, whereas the beautyrest condenses under pressure. It’s still a decent sleeping experience, but I do find that I have more pressure points with the beautyrest than the Malbec. Plus, the beautyrest black tends to lean towards the sides of the bed. Meaning if you sit on the end of the bed, or lay down close to the edge, you get a slight feeling of rolling off the bed, even if you aren’t, whereas the Malbec cushions you in place wherever you are. This particular aspect irritates my husband as it’s a bit of an uncanny feeling. At this point, I’ve been married less than a year, I’m sleeping most nights in the guest room so I can be on my queen size Kingdown and let’s face it, that’s not the best thing for my newlywed life. M TLDR/In Conclusion… I miss the old specs and material of my Kingdown Malbec. The talalay, the excellent coils, the wool topper, the horsehair, the plush responsiveness that feels like I’m sleeping on a cloud. It felt like a luxurious sleeping experience and I’m really hoping to find something similar but feel a bit left down by the “mass produced meh” of the Beautyrest Black. Should I go handmade? Is that even a real thing anymore? Things to look for? Reputable brands?

Thanks. Much appreciated . . . and bummer about longevity. We tried some mattresses that had latex (wife didn't like), and we tried a very nice hand-tufted Kingsdown (which we both liked). My only beef with the Kingsdown was that this particular construction was only available at Mattress Warehouse, which does not have the greatest guarantee policy. Related. Since the comfort layers on the Helix are completely independent and interchangeable, do people refresh the comfort layer after X years, instead of buying a whole new mattress? Is that even an option?

I'm a skinny 150 lbs guy with scoliosis. For more than a decade, I slept on a mattress made by a small local manufacturer, a simple medium firm innerspring mattress with an Eurotop and it was fine. Also, when I go to hotels and Airbnb's, I sleep usually well and pain-free. I'm just back from France where I spent one week on a child mattress in my friend's guest bedroom and it was perfectly fine. The nightmare at home began in 2021 when I had to change my old locally made Eurotop mattress. -Cheap Zinus foam mattress bought on Amazon. It was okish once a memory foam topper was added to it, but still would give me frequent back pain that would wake me up. -Plush Wayfair mattress: way too soft, horrible violent back pain, couldn't return it, resold it, went back to the Sinus -Tuft n Needle horrible mattress: way too painfully rigid. They refunded me, made me keep it, it's now in the guest bedroom. Guests love it. Go figure. -Zinus hybrid mattress that was allegedly medium firm. It was a brick. Even with a memory topper on top of it, it was a brick. Amazon refunded me, didn't take it back, I resold it. At this point, I did all the mattress stores in my city, bought a big brand mattress that was way too soft. I couldn't return it, only exchange it. Ended up almost forcefully (nothing else was working in the store) with a Kingsdown mattress that was the softest Kingsdown mattress of the collection, but still too rigid for me. Sleeping on the side, I would wake up in horrendous pain after two hours. I have added a topper and if I sleep on my side, I'm ok until 5-6 am, where the back pain starts, but if I turn on my back during the night, I will wake up with violent pain. During Black Friday, I ordered a medium firm Silk n Snow. A brick. A mixture of granite and brick. Completely unusable. After some hassle and delays, they took it back. I once again did all the mattress stores in a radius of 150 km radius and tried everything. At my local Sleep Country, there was a heavy discount on a Casper Snow, $1000 CAD. Big mistake. That thing is waaaay too soft! Violent back pain that lasted for hours during the whole morning. I'm going to exchange it but I'm locked in to what they offer at Sleep Country. Any suggestions around that price or lower? What to look for? The firmness scale seems to mean nothing, it varies widely from one brand to the other. The softest Kinsgdown mattress is too rigid for me while a Casper that is allegedly medium first is way too soft. How to properly test the mattress in store? Which mattress could reproduce the usual hotel or Airbnb experience? In Airbnbs, it often seems to be older mattresses on older box springs. It works well for me. Why would a mattress made for children work so well for me while so many popular brand mattresses don't work at all?

I've been very happy with Kingsdown, which you can also get at Sleep Country among other chains. It's also Canadian, along with a bunch of other manufacturers that've been listed here

We are currently replacing two Kingsdown mattresses - one is twenty years old and one is twenty five years old. They were warriors and I don’t regret the purchases. I have no idea how they are made these days but they were made very well when we bought them.
