Hi - Just easier for me to respond in this window on my computer screen... Hope you don't mind. - **Dream Spring:** I took some time to look into the Dream Spring collection to see what that is about. Looks to me like a response to the latest wave of luxury multi-layer mattress with multiple layers of different kinds of springs and foams. If you are set on springs I would ask more questions about this line just so you are informed. It's a big investment so you will want to be as informed as possible, even if you aren't buying that line. - **Natural Collection:** Again, I don't think this was available when I bought my mattress. For the cost, I think I would cross this line off the list due to Dunlop. Many people feel differently about Dunlop so don't take my word for it. - **Premier Natural Collection:** So this line has talalay but I'm not seeing how the premier natural collection differs from the classic collection and if I were spending all that money, I would ask about it. - **Classic Collection:** I'm familiar with this line - What I like about it is you start with the all cotton mattress. But instead of toppers they call the add-ons "pillow tops" which is a better term and more accurately describes what you get. > **Royal Pedic Quilt Top** >> This is the all cotton mattress with wool quilting stitched into the top and bottom. All these mattresses are flippable. > **Royal Pedic Pillow Top** >> This is the all cotton mattress with a 3" pillow top on the top and bottom. > **Royal Pedic Royal Cloud** is the all cotton matress with the 4" or 5" pillow top on the top and bottom. >> It is so simple and you can buy the all cotton plus the pillow top you want and just put the pillow top on top of the mattress every time you flip it. I do think you will have to buy another pillow top sooner than 20 years if you do it this way. >> I love the simplicity of this approach and you will never convince me that 25 layers of 15 different knds of materials makes a difference (ie; Dream Spring) > **Royal Latex Mattress (without quilt top):** >> This is what you buy if you know for sure you will buy one of the pillow tops. You don't need quilting and a pillow top. The pillow top makes the quilting moot. > **Royal Latex Quilt top:** >> This is the mattress I have. I was maxed out and couldn't afford a pillow top. I thought I would get one later and never did. I did get a very thick wool pad and I use a thick all cotton mattress pad from Coyuchi. Not as much cushioning as a pillow top but ended up being perfect for me. ***** - **In Person Tryout:** > I don't know if you have any plans to travel to one of their vendors but I would try to visit one. I know they make mattresses to order but they do have vendors with the mattresses you can try out. I know there is one in Beverly Hills. - **Delivery:** > I'm curious who they are using for delivery and set up. I'd ask them about that because if they use random internet people there could be an issue. This mattress is a huge investment and you don't want people scratching their head during set up because they can't figure it out and have never worked with the product before. - **Box Spring:** > I think it's very odd that they said you might not need their box spring. That sounds very unlike them and very sales-y. Are they afraid you won't buy if you have to buy the box spring so they are saying it's fine without? I'm suspect of that. These mattresses weigh a ton and my Royal Pedic box spring is a tank. It has never budged. > When I eventually buy a cheaper mattress I want to try to keep my box spring. I've been told by so many people that my box spring is now too old and I need to get rid of it. But I have always had it covered with an all cotton cover that gets washed regularly. And I cannot tell a difference from the day it was new to now. > It's not so much saving the money. It's that I have a "they don't make them like they used to" fear about getting rid of this box spring. It looks and feels like the day it was delivered. > The web site says the box spring **come with** the mattress. There is no separate pricing. - **Pricing** > $11,600 for the All cotton plus a 3" pillow top pad. >> That sounds about right based on inflation over the last 20 years. But I feel like that should include the box spring and then you should get to decide if you want to get a new bed or not to accommodate the box spring... > $12,700 - Classic Quilt-Top >> Yeah option 1 is a better value. > $22k - Standard Dream Spring. >> That seems a non-starter. I would just ask what they think you get for double the price. Keep in mind that Vispring and Shifman (and many more) are also $20,000. This is the accepted price point for that kind of mattress. - **Longevity** > *He said that they expect the mattress to truly last 20 years. The mattress being flippable is a big part of the longevity expectations.* >> Correct. This is not a sales pitch only. It's true. Probably over 20 years. So if you buy a $3,000 mattress that lasts five years you will be into $12,000 for 20 years. If you buy at $5,000 mattress that lasts five years again, that's $20,000 after 20 years. And for all that time, you are sleeping on lower quality and performance. - **Innerspring:** > I disagree with the term "old school innerspring." Royal pedic uses the best innersprings available or I think they make their own, maybe? I never asked or learned about this because I prefer all latex. But if you ask any of the mattress guys here on this forum they will tell you all about the number of turns in each spring and the type of steel used. > It's worth asking those questions if you are coming away feeling like you are paying an inflated price for "old school innerspring." - **Pocket Coils:** > In terms of pocket coils, I don't know much about them. As I understand it, the pockets are always a synthetic material which defeats the purpose of an all natural mattress. The preferred and superior way to secure the coils is hand tying (I think) and that's what you get with Royal Pedic. It's the way things used to be done (I think). - **Aireloom:** > You can watch Spencer deconstruct an Aireloom mattress on youtube if you want. Spencer recommends them. Aireloom for me is just too much going on. It feels like bells and whistles that don't equal longevity or a solid feeling that lasts for years. And there is a lot of synthetic in an aireloom. The fact that Aireloom comes rolled and vacuum pressed in a box and Royal Pedic ships flat tells me all I need to know. > I think I would look into a Kluft or King Coil that you can get from a department store before moving on to Aireloom but that's just me... > But I make no money regardless of what you do... lol. In terms of Royal Pedic being worth the premium, in my experience, it is. Aireloom is an assembly line mattress glued together and Royal Pedic is a hand made mattress with superior materials hand tufted together. For my money, tufting is important and much preferable to slabs glued together. But again, I have no personal feeling about what you get. Just trying to answer your question. - **Avocado:** > In terms of Avocado's luxury line again for me that's too many layers and all marketing. I am considering Avocado because they physically make the mattresses near me and I like that. I would get the green with the one or two inch topper or the all latex. I just have no preconceptions about the Avocado, and think it will last max 10 years during which time it will never feel like a Royal Pedic and why should it for half the cost? I think mattresses like Avocado tend to immediately start to feel "not new" and continue that downward trend over the years until you have a sag on your hands. My Royal Pedic may have outlived its lifespan but it still has not sagged. Upside is that Avocado is one of the few relatively inexpensive mattresses that features tufting, which I value. - **Latex durability:** > In terms of latex deteriorating, it doesn't break down the way synthetic foam does. And when it does eventually break down (after 20+years), it is biodegradable. Unlike synthetic foams that never get absorbed into the earth and are here to stay - like plastic. There is no comparison between latex and synthetic foam. I know that no matter what I get, I want the least amount of synthetic as possible. I'm going to stop here because it feels like you have moved off Royal Pedic which is all good, too!
I had a bedinabox mattress for 12 years and I loved it. It's memory foam and manufactured in TN. When it was time for a new mattress last month, I decided to go organic. I researched as you are doing and ended up with My Green Mattress Nature's Escape. I liked that it was a small company with great customer service. So I bought the bed when on sale and got it within a few days. I liked it but didn't love it. They recommended a topper and I went with that. Now I love it and love that it had no odor and I know it's quality.
All I wanted was an organic mattress that was well made, supportive, and comfy. It doesn't seem like too much to ask . . . but just like many of us, I became a tortured soul trying to find "the one." I spent a good 6 weeks of my life and in excess of 30 hours reading reviews, watching the clowns on youtube, and engaging in the many threads on here. During that time, I emailed several companies with questions and from some, did not hear back. Those companies, I took off the list. Then I looked at companies that just sprang into existence in the past few years to hop on the organic craze and took them off the list. I added to that data, the mattresses mentioned here that seemed to have more bad reviews than good. I went to a few mattress stores within 1 hour of me and all they had for organic was the Avocado. It felt fine, but I had watched a video on youtube where they cut one up, and it really did not look good to me, so I crossed them off. Seemed very mass produced. I ended up deciding between Naturpedic and My Green Mattress. The Naturepedic EOS seemed the best but frankly, I did not want to build my own bed and swap layers . . . and spend $3k. Even if it is customizable, I really don't want a DIY bed for that price. So, I went with My Green Mattress Nature's Escape. Horrible name, but I liked that it was a small company and that they are known for good customer service. I ordered my mattress on Thursday . . and it is being delivered today - 3 days later! What?!!! I am a combo sleeper, and sleep back, stomach and side equally and will report back. I am transitioning from a 10 year old memory foam so it may be a rough transition but I will give it a try. I really want to sleep on more natural materials and not stay with memory foam. And have it last a few years so I can avoid this nightmare of choosing for awhile Fingers crossed . ...
It's been three nights and it's been OK. I do like that there's zero chemical or mattress smell and it seems super high quality . .. .with more wool on top that the Avocado. As far as comfort, it's supportive but my neck has been a bit stiff. I need to give it more time and the MGM recommended a foam topper if I don't want to wait the 30 days for it to conform to my body. I am coming off a 12 year memory foam so it's going to be an adjustment!
Update: The mattress was delivered today. FedEx said 10:15 am and the guy got here at 4 pm. Oh well, although I waited all day, he was a nice guy and put the box my living room. I then slid the 115 lb box to my bedroom. Then the fun began. They have an unboxing video that they send you with your receipt of payment, and it's also on their website. A thin young woman calmly and easily moves the bed on the slats and uwraps. No promblem . . .right? WRONG. WHile I managed to put the box on the foundation horizontally, I then opened the other side of the box and held on, then pushed the one end of the bed in the box with my foot, while holding onto the box. It was a struggle but I got the bed out of the box and onto the slats. Then came time to unwrap. And no, it was not anything like the woman in the video. The mattress and 1,000 yards of plastic wrap fought me every step of the way. I pulled, I struggled, I yanked, and I swore. It was exhausting. And as soon as I was able to get about 1/3 of the wrap off, the bed started hissing at me and took on a life of it's own. Almost like a creature from the deep hissing and expanding and becoming entirely too difficult to move. But, I did it. My back may never be the same but the bed is on the slats properly and looks very nice. I am trying not to hate it already for that ordeal. Let's see how it goes tonight!
Update: I do like my mattress and am glad I went with this brand. It's comfortable and supportive. I did add a latex topper to make it more cushy, and that's made it much more comfy. I was used to memory foam that kind of hugs you, and so now it's more huggy with the topper.
Seconding my green mattress. I just got their natural escape mattress a week ago and love it. It’s a touch too firm for my husband so we’re planning to get a topper of some kind. Even with that, though, he says it’s the best sleep he’s gotten in years, and it is for me as well.
I have had a Natural Escape from My Green Mattress for three years and it is still amazing. It took us a lot of research and time and quite a few bad mattresses to finally get to our winner.
Return it and buy one of the many other latex mattresses that are much better quality at a fraction of the cost. - SleepEZ - Latex Mattress Factory Luxerion Hybrid - My Green Mattress (probably the closest in comparison)
My Green Mattress has the following certifications and is a small business in Illinois. I've tried their beds in store because I live near them and they are very well made. The Natural Escape is one of the two beds they offer (this one has 3in of latex vs their Kiwi that has 2 in). The Natural Escape Organic Mattress has earned the top organic certifications in the mattress industry including: GOTS Certified Organic (CU1015248), GOLS Certified Organic (CU 865932), GreenGuard Gold Certified by UL Labs, and MadeSafe® Certified.
We’re also happy with our MGM
I’m not sure what your price point is exactly because I wouldn’t say what we went with is necessarily inexpensive but compared to the Avocado that I wanted to get… we chose My Green Mattress and have been pretty happy with it.
About 2 years. If we could have, I would’ve picked avocado but it was just out of our price range. I think avocado is a bit firmer as well and I much prefer a firmer mattress. MGM is definitely more medium to medium/firm imo.
Best of luck to you and use your mattress in good health. MGM is a fine company and produce a great product. BTW, Naturepedic offers an excellent product, and although you can swap layers if need be, I would not consider it a DIY, as there are actual benefits to their style of mattress. And who knows, you may never need to swap anything. None the less, you did great, with a great company. Just be certain, your foundation is super important. If slatted, the spacing should be less than 3", slats should be around a thickness of 3/4", if only a 1/2" be certain they do not flex while you are sleeping or resting on the mattress, and the slats should be 2-3" wide. If using an adjustable base, the decking should be solid, not metal grid. Since you are getting a natural mattress, stick with cotton or linen sheets. Use a mattress protector that is breathable, natural with a moisture layer between two natural layers, much like the one MGM sells.
We got a My Green Mattress hybrid last year and love it. I did end up getting the additional latex topper though. I am a larger bodied person and a side sleeper but my husband could take it or leave it.
We have a full and a queen from mygreenmattress.com (goofy name, quality product). Have had both for 8ish years and they’re excellent. We were specifically shopping for mattresses without synthetic / foam / etc.
