When I had my first baby, the Newton crib mattress seemed to be the gold standard. So that's what we got, and naturally we upgraded her to a Newton twin mattress when baby #2 came along. I was terrified of SIDS, and the mattress was so easy to clean during our potty training days - I have no complaints! Now that we have baby #3, we need to add another mattress to the mix soon (and the Memorial Day deals are looking pretty attractive). I went further down the rabbit hole of crunchiness, and it seemed like the gold standard is Naturepedic? That's fine, we can make the switch over. But then I see comments like, "OMG I would never put my kids on a Newton, all the plastic and all the toxins will [insert all scary outcomes here]." Now I'm freaking out! Do I switch all of the kids' mattresses to Naturepedic? That will be a lot of money. Do I just buy Naturepedic for the third mattress? That means one kid gets a "healthy" mattress and the other two will sleep with a "toxic" one. I know I probably sound deranged, but fb crunchy groups really get in my head 😭 I'm hoping for some middle-of-the-road, moderately granola advice from y'all here. I'd appreciate it ao much 💛
Yeah originally we were going for another Newton just because there hasn't been a problem with it so far. But now this whole toxin-free thing plus I'm getting predatory vibes from Newton, I'm starting to research for something else.
What did you end up getting after going through the rabbit hole of options. currently we are thinking the tiptoe bunk bed from babyletto and the newton twin mattresses since we lived their crib mattress. We are still clueless on a dresser and before we can get the rest we need to find the dresser to so it can all match well.
I’m just here to say, I had a traditional mattress get ruined last year from my senior dog throwing up on it. It soaked through the comforter, blankets, sheets, waterproof mattress protector, AND through the whole mattress to the underside. I don’t hate the idea of a bigger Newton for my big kids now lol.
It was pretty crazy, and definitely not a normal thing to happen. But to me, if you’re buying a new mattress, the Newton twins seem super affordable, and for freak accidents, not a bad investment.
If you’re deep into this topic my son had a babyletto pure (the one with the coconut core) but it was hell to clean after he puked. Newton is the best imo
I have a Newton but if I could have gone back in time and gotten an Avocado I would have. I have one for myself and love it.
We got the newton off of fb marketplace for $80 (hardly used, clean home!) and I love it- we washed it before using (super easy to clean)! She’s just started rolling and is now sleeping on her front, I don’t have any anxieties about it with this mattress!
Not sure if this is how the mattress is but we have the waterproof mattress pad from them and the top is cushy kind of spongey. So my guess is that is what creates a channel of air before the waterproof layer. If you just use a few cotton sheets over a waterproof layer then I don't think that provides the same airy channel.
Yea, I'm not sure since I don't have a purple mattress and can't compare. But I don't think the spacer material for the newton is cotton. My guess is that the spacer material doesn't compress as much as cotton under weight meaning more air is available when you lay on it.
Oh haha, very funny since Purple is an actual mattress brand too. But I do have normal mattress protectors and they are just a waterproof material with cotton sheet on top, but still thin like any sheet. The Newton one is not like that, the top pad is thicker with whatever spacer material they have. It's actually quite hefty and rigid. I have to wash it by itself in the washing machine because of that lol.
I did the same and found one for a great deal on Good Buy Gear!
It's an open box site, like Rebel - I prefer buying the open box/unused items, but they also sell used items. The box it was shipped in was a little beat up, but the item was perfectly wrapped and brand new!
You don’t need to waterproof it until they’re out of diapers… the regular mattress pad can be washed if damp with spit up or something. I actually never even used the waterproof mattress pad I bought bc when my daughter was out of diapers she was in a twin bed and my new baby took the crib. … also the whole mattress can be hosed down and dried in the sun if needdd. I loved the newton! But you don’t need to waterproof it- there’s nothing to ruin.
Definitely newton. It’s an investment, but I told myself I’d rather buy it once than keep upgrading later 😅 Knowing it lasts through the toddler years made the price feel way more reasonable for us.
