When I had my first baby, the Newton crib mattress seemed to be the gold standard. So that's what we got, and naturally we upgraded her to a Newton twin mattress when baby #2 came along. I was terrified of SIDS, and the mattress was so easy to clean during our potty training days - I have no complaints! Now that we have baby #3, we need to add another mattress to the mix soon (and the Memorial Day deals are looking pretty attractive). I went further down the rabbit hole of crunchiness, and it seemed like the gold standard is Naturepedic? That's fine, we can make the switch over. But then I see comments like, "OMG I would never put my kids on a Newton, all the plastic and all the toxins will [insert all scary outcomes here]." Now I'm freaking out! Do I switch all of the kids' mattresses to Naturepedic? That will be a lot of money. Do I just buy Naturepedic for the third mattress? That means one kid gets a "healthy" mattress and the other two will sleep with a "toxic" one. I know I probably sound deranged, but fb crunchy groups really get in my head 😭 I'm hoping for some middle-of-the-road, moderately granola advice from y'all here. I'd appreciate it ao much 💛
Yeah originally we were going for another Newton just because there hasn't been a problem with it so far. But now this whole toxin-free thing plus I'm getting predatory vibes from Newton, I'm starting to research for something else.
The newton twin mattress is great, we have that for ours and it was really useful during potty training as well. Plus, it is very safe for face planters!
What did you end up getting after going through the rabbit hole of options. currently we are thinking the tiptoe bunk bed from babyletto and the newton twin mattresses since we lived their crib mattress. We are still clueless on a dresser and before we can get the rest we need to find the dresser to so it can all match well.
You can check out the newton twin mattress, it is greenguard certified and hypoallergenic, I have a step daughter with extreme sensitive skin and she doesn't get any rashes or anything from this mattress.
I’ve definitely gone down this rabbit hole too and had to take a step back from crunchy comments for my own sanity. We’ve used newton mattresses with more than one kid and haven’t had any issues, and the peace of mind around firmness and breathability mattered more to me than trying to find the “perfect” non-toxic option. At some point everything feels like a tradeoff, and I had to remind myself to trust the choice I already felt good about instead of letting the internet scare me.
I’m just here to say, I had a traditional mattress get ruined last year from my senior dog throwing up on it. It soaked through the comforter, blankets, sheets, waterproof mattress protector, AND through the whole mattress to the underside. I don’t hate the idea of a bigger Newton for my big kids now lol.
It was pretty crazy, and definitely not a normal thing to happen. But to me, if you’re buying a new mattress, the Newton twins seem super affordable, and for freak accidents, not a bad investment.
You can read up about the newton twin mattress, we have that for our oldest and it keeps up well. You can also wash it after accidents and it is easy to do. Plus, it is under 500. You also want to keep an eye on their site because we got it when there was a special happening.
We have been really happy with our newton too!! It's pretty firm and has held up really well over time, no sagging at all.
We actually had birch first but ended up switching to a newton twin mattress. Honestly, the fact that you can fully wash it is what won me over. It’s not the typical organic latex style since it has that woven core, but it’s greenguard gold and we felt good about it. We're currently potty training our toddler and it's been such a relief being able to hose down our mattress when our kid had an accident.
Newton all the way honestly mainly because it's washable.. I do not want to worry about deep cleaning a mattress if i need to.
If you’re deep into this topic my son had a babyletto pure (the one with the coconut core) but it was hell to clean after he puked. Newton is the best imo
