We haven’t really transferred our son into his room cuz I’m not ready yet 🥹 but we do have a mattress for him. We got the Newton baby & toddler mattress one after research and apparently it’s ultra breathable that even if they laid face down, it shouldn’t suffocate? It’s washable as well. Also, I purchased their own sheets so they’re breathable as well. They are expensive but we got it as a registry gift. They have different kinds so we got the $300 one. He didn’t have an issue when we do some naps there. I’m sure there are others similar but to me, I felt more comfortable with this as it’s also durable and doesn’t feel/look cheap. The entire thing comes apart and is washable Good luck 🩵

When I had my first baby, the Newton crib mattress seemed to be the gold standard. So that's what we got, and naturally we upgraded her to a Newton twin mattress when baby #2 came along. I was terrified of SIDS, and the mattress was so easy to clean during our potty training days - I have no complaints! Now that we have baby #3, we need to add another mattress to the mix soon (and the Memorial Day deals are looking pretty attractive). I went further down the rabbit hole of crunchiness, and it seemed like the gold standard is Naturepedic? That's fine, we can make the switch over. But then I see comments like, "OMG I would never put my kids on a Newton, all the plastic and all the toxins will [insert all scary outcomes here]." Now I'm freaking out! Do I switch all of the kids' mattresses to Naturepedic? That will be a lot of money. Do I just buy Naturepedic for the third mattress? That means one kid gets a "healthy" mattress and the other two will sleep with a "toxic" one. I know I probably sound deranged, but fb crunchy groups really get in my head 😭 I'm hoping for some middle-of-the-road, moderately granola advice from y'all here. I'd appreciate it ao much 💛

I got a newton second hand from a friend and my baby sleeps much better on it than her other mattress, I think it's a little softer and not as noisy. That said, in the US they're pass fail like carseats, if they're for sale they're safe. I wouldn't buy the XYZ brands from Amazon but any real brands are fine

I loved the Newton bassinet but regretted getting their crib mattress—by the time we moved him to the crib he wasn't having regular blowouts so the washable element wasn't really necessary and IMO a firm mattress should be fine breathability-wise but it did have a little peace of mind. Now I'm thinking of giving it away instead of keeping it because I didn't realize how much plastic it is. Probably getting a Naturepedic twin mattress but also considering Avocado and My Green Mattress.

Ditto on what everyone said about crib mattress standards. You don't need an expensive mattress. That said, I got a Newton mattress secondhand from someone I trust (generally used mattresses are not a good idea in case there's stains and smoke or whatever... But also the Newton is made of plastic and the whole thing is washable). I love it. It's very firm, which my daughter doesn't seem to mind, and the breathable material gives me such peace of mind. When she was a baby, she would face plant into her bed and I felt better knowing she wasn't going to block her air passage on a plush mattress. Anyway, the important part is that it's a crib mattress. But we do love our Newton, if that's in budget for your family and important for your peace of mind.

Echoing the Newton rec. Not only is it completely breathable even if they sleep face-down, the cover is washable and the core can be rinsed off. My son had a bad GI virus and this feature came in handy

Also got the Newton, and glad we did. We have a stomach sleeper. It really is breathable, tried it myself.
