I’ll try to keep this brief and not lay out a novel. Currently my partner and I have a king Simmons Beautyrest Hybrid Pillow Top Plush which is about 5 years old. I’m 175lbs and 90% stomach, 10% side sleeper. She is 135lbs and about 50/50 side/back sleeper. The Simmons has been a great bed and even though it’s a plush, it seems equally as firm as some mediums we have tried out recently. We are both pretty active, no predisposed aches/pains, but haven’t been diligent in rotating our mattress so there’s some impressions in the mattress that have developed. That’s on us. Current frame and box springs are solid, so we will be looking at just a mattress purchase. So far we have made one trip to a furniture store and tried out: \- Sealy Ellie Lane EPT Medium - front runner so far (worried about durability due to price point, TBH) \- Sterns & Foster Estate Medium TT - runner up \- Sterns & Foster Lux Estate Firm EPT - initial comfort isn’t much better/different than above two options, although I wonder if durability will be better due to price/debsity \- Purple - not a huge fan \- Termpur Pedic - not a huge fan \- Dream Cloud - not a huge fan Full memory foams aren’t our preference, and we plan to go check out some nicer Beautyrest options as well as other options today. Any suggestions on what to check out? Update: post shopping today - we really liked the Beautyrest Black series one medium tight top. Update 2: the Sealy Elite medium tight top was also a top contender. We also became adjustable base fans. Update 3: [made a purchase](https://www.reddit.com/r/Mattress/s/U0PbNPDAD1)
The Sealy Elite TT in medium is what we believe to have settled on. We ruled out the hybrids and pillow tops during our search. I appreciate the insight!
Get an innerspring mattress with a nice comfort layer. Go to mattress stores and try out mattresses. Then buy one during an upcoming sale. I’m 5’3”, 200 lbs for reference. I finally found one I like at Mattress Firm. Sealy Posturepedic Elite Brenham 2 Medium tight top. I’m a side and back sleeper.
Just understand that in Sealy language, certain titles mean certain things. For instance anything in the elite series has their best support coil system and it's multi zoned. Those are good things. What you want to consider though is the different types of elites as that will mean a different feel in the top layers. The Hybrid top from Sealy is very thick layers of memory foam and it will sink in and feel like it kind of wraps around you a bit. Some people like that, I hate it. The Euro tops you have experienced and are a bit more cushion but can sleep warmer and the top tends to be the first point of failure after some years. Personally, I like the quilt tops much better. They still have some foam at the top but not nearly as much memory foam, you don't sink in as much but you can still get medium feel instead of firm. Overall I think the elite series from Sealy are really solid choice...just pick the right firmness and the right type of top (Hybrid, Euro, and quilt) This would be my choice at Mattress Warehouse. Sealy Posturepedic® Elite Brenham Medium Mattress · Mattress Warehouse https://share.google/fdjZ2F4keAbKxeWqq Good luck
Sealy by far. The elite series has incredible coil support system and going up to the highpoint level gets you phase change material as well as the cooling cover. It should be noted that you will get a significant amount of sinking into the mattress feeling with the amount of memory foam...some like that and some don't. You could look at the Brenham II models in medium and you might like that as well...same incredible support system. Either way, the entire line is really good
I will just add that the two mattresses that were mentioned by dark night (Thermobalance Elite and Helix Plus Elite) both are made by 3Z in the USA and have the unique feature of being able to swap only the comfort layer on the top which is really nice. I think either one of these two would be great. As far as the big brands, while I agree with the assessment on the BR, I actually think that the Sealy Elite line (Spring series) are also very good mattresses. Those are the three I would lean towards.
Sealy Elite Spring series are a good series and have a great coil system for support. You are light enough that the pillowtop may not compress/fail but I tend to go for straight quilt top mattresses. Brenham II is made in quilt top & pillowtop so you could do either.
You can select any mattress with a good coil support system (preferably zoned) and then get whatever comfort layer you want on top. The top comfort layers can be one of three designs (Quilt, Euro, or Hybrid) and that will determine the thickness and types of foams you get as well as the density. While this applies to most foam over coil mattresses, I will just use Sealy as an example. Their PRO and elite lines use their best coil system. Let's just use elite for example... You can get a Sealy elite in all three configs for the comfort layer. I would stay with their firm choice and try all three top types. (Ie: Albany II or Brenham II)... The Euro top will give you a thicker layer of non memory foam for cushion, the quilt top a bit less and the hybrid top will be a thick layer of memory foam (my least favorite). Good luck!
The Sealy Elite series are my top choice in the Sealy series (Pro series as well if you want to save a few bucks). These two lines carry Sealy's best and most supportive coil support system. I personally prefer Firm (Albany II) but my wife would go for the Brenham II all day long. All in all if I bought Sealy, I would choose this mattress line all day. I think it's a great choice if he likes it and should be good for years to come.
BeautyRest World Class series which is actually my preferred series in their line as it's higher quality than the two lines below it and doesn't seem to have as many QA issues as the Black series above it has. I think this line is solid. (Series 3 or 4) Sealy - as long as you stick with the Pro or Elite line there, you will get Sealy's best coil system and you can choose what kind of comfort layer you want (plush, medium, firm) and the top layer format (hybrid, quilt, euro). That would also be a solid choice. (I would choose an Elite Series) Sterns - I like their Lux Estate models and again you can choose your comfort layer and top format. Helix - Gets a lot of love in the community and specifically they make a lot of models that are designed for the different sleeper positions. I would consider their luxe models for a bit more comfort over the core models. An example of how much they offer is if you want a luxe model that is Firm, they make one for side sleepers and one for back sleepers...the difference is they simply replace one layer of foam with another or swap those layer orders. Helix makes an Elite line and if I were to buy one it would be one of those...not because the comfort layer is thicker or it has micro coils and foam, but for the flexibility of the comfort layer swap. The entire comfort layer (several layers) is encased in a cotton cover that simply slips into the Top cover. You can swap just that layer later when your needs change for much less than buying a new mattress. Start off with Helix Midnight Elite and feel you need it firmer? Just have them send you a Dawn or Twilight comfort layer and swap it. Pretty convenient. Diamond - Ultimately my wife & I choose the "Black Diamond" series from Diamond Mattress. It had everything we wanted (just enough give on the top layer without being soft, a good coil support system and cooling features. We bought the Black Diamond Vail (Lux Hybrid Quilt Top in Firm). If we dont like it (Not here yet), The Helix Twilight Elite is my next go to. Good luck!!
Run down to your Mattress store and lay on some Sealy Pro or Elite series mattresses. They have one of the best coil support systems. The Elite will have more/thicker foam and some cooling tech, but if it's out of budget grab a Pro series. I recommend medium firmness, spring series, Pro or elite line, and quilt top. Half the price of previous recommendation.
Just pulled the trigger on a Sealy Elite Brenham 2 Medium in a Cal King. I wanted to avoid the pillowtop, since it was on my prev 2016 Beautyrest Black that lasted for 9 years. Brenham felt nice in the showroom, albeit 'pre-broken in' and I was looking for a Medium Firm than Medium. Sales manager said it would feel firmer with the Tempurpedic box frames (which have the flat boards on top), so I got those too. Anyone curious I'm happy to report back. Looking fwd to this new mattress!
After 5 days I returned the Brenham! While plenty of foam and comfy, it's not for hot sleepers. Partner said xnay. Traded it in for a clearance Beautyrest Black Series 3 Medium, a MUCH cooler mattress. You rest more on top of the mattress than sinking into it. Beautyrests have a decent layer of latex that helps w the cooling. None of the Sealys I know of have latex. Wish I knew that from the start, but finally landed on the right mattress. 👍
Sealy Posturepedic Elite Brenham II. Had lots more foam layers, and you sink into it. Not for us, but sleepers who are looking for that + warmth will like it.
I recently ordered a Queen Sealy Elite Brenham in Medium. Got it clearance ordered from the warehouse with a 5 year warranty but no return policy, plus a box spring, for about $1300 including tax. It’s supposed to be here Wednesday, weather permitting. All in all if it’s not absolutely terrible I think I’ll be happy with it just for the price, even the comparable Costco Sealy would’ve been about the same once I added a box spring and I couldn’t test that one out in person. What do you think of the Brenham? Couldn’t find a ton of reviews on it other than either people loving it or thinking it sleeps a little hot.
exact one i am laying on rn (brenham ii medium quilt top, i've always had plush mattresses), i've had it for like two months now and my back and hip pain is about as low as i can really expect w chronic pain.
i know there are cooling mattresses, cooling mattress toppers, but i'll also mention cooling sheets. best sheets i ever got, that i actually had to switch out for jersey sheets in winter, were sijo eucalyptus sheets. i've seen very similar sheets on amazon, but not the same quality. they almost made me too cold, they were so breathable and cooling. natural fibers and even wool can help with temperature regulation. idk what kind of mattress you are looking for, but i recently got a sealy posturepedic elite brenham II and the quilted top is really damn comfy and plush even at medium firmness, and it's really breathable.
Badm3at, best advice I can offer is to stay away from specific options that people recommend in this chat. Everybody is different so you can’t recommend a specific Mattress across multiple types of sleepers and bodies. A lot of these recommendations are a great value option, but with a budget that you are shopping ($3kish), you really wanna stick to a name brand so you don’t have a bad outcome. With off brands, the most common outcome is a bed that you can no longer sleep on because of comfort after only three or four years. The Sealy and Stearns and Foster options I recommended above, are built to last 15 years if you choose the right comfort. The Sealy Posturepedic option is around 2000 and the Stearns and Foster around 3000. Best of luck to you and I hope you find one that works out!
Hello. Been working for Mattress company for 10 years and have seen a lot. Top two recommendations would be Sealy Posturepedic elite tight top or Stearns & Foster estate medium or Studio medium.
Do you think the Brenham PT Medium is comparable to the High Point Hybrid Soft in general feel? Asking bc I have the HP Hybrid Soft and it's too sinky/doughy, yet also causes some shoulder pressure. I just tried the Brenham PT Medium and it felt more normal in store. But wondering if it will feel roughly the same as the HP once I am sleeping on it (if I was to do an exchange). I.e., I'd rather not go through hassle of exchange if I am effectively getting the same mattress again.
