We went through this a while back. We went to the mattress store and found what seemed like a good inner spring mattress. We did not like it and ended up sending it back within a month. Then we ordered a soft foam mattress. It was ok for a while, but ended up being too soft and hurting my back. We finally decided to order a Sleep Number bed, and gave the too soft mattress to our daughter. The Sleep Number has been great. You are not locked into any level of firmness or softness because you can adjust it. It has a feature that adjusts the firmness automatically when you roll to your side. We got one of the cheaper Sleep Numbers (I believe it is the C4 series). It is not one that you can raise the head and feet, and does not have any crazy features like temperature control or anything. You do have to buy the integrated box springs with it because the air pumps sit in the base. They can be a bit pricey, so watch for a sale (they have them often.) It looks like right at this second you could get the C4 Queen and base for about $2000.
I think about $1500 but that was about 15 years ago. It's a king size dual control select comfort bed with 3 different zones that you can adjust individually. Since the zones are air bags, feels just as good today as it did new. Worth the price.
I came here to say get a Sleepnumber! I got one with my ex for the same reason, and when we broke up I kept the mattress and bed. My current boyfriend could probably fall asleep anywhere and on anything, but it was a nice luxury to be able to set the mattress for him to his liking. The most basic mattress they have is great and very affordable IMO.
Same. We purchased one last year and it's been a game changer. People scoff at their price, and yes they are expensive. $6K+ for a bed seems crazy until you experience good rest. We have a split top and it can auto raise if one of us starts to snore or whatever, and it really does work. I sleep better on a firm bed and my wife sleeps better on a soft bed. We each have our side adjusted how we like it. We went through 3 of the other name brand foam beds over the last 5 years trying to find one we liked. We could just never get comfortable.
I’m not a Sleep Number shill, I promise. I bought one eighteen months ago with an adjustable frame and I’ve never slept better. I wake in the same position that I fell asleep in with no pressure point aches or pain and head up so no more GERD wake ups. They are not cheap, but I got what I paid for.
Sleep number king size with adjustable base. About $7,500. Absolutely best frivolous purchase we've made. Love it.
