I’d suggest a Twin XL Stearns & Foster Estate Ultra Firm. Twin XL mattresses are 5” longer than normal twin and Stearns are just built better Checkout local liquidation stores where they advertise 50-80% off MSRP. If they’re anything like my place, They’ll have an odd Twin XL laying around. Typically sold in pairs for split king adjustable base beds those Stearns Twin XL are unbeatable in quality. Even if you spend a little more it’ll be worth it in the long run. And most dealers now have No credit required financing Hope this helps!
You need a traditional mattress if you want to sleep firm, not some foam shit. I love an extra firm mattress, and I’ve only slept on Stearns and Foster for 15 years. They’re great for me.
My partner has back issues and I have hip pain from injuries. We are pretty old school and need a very firm mattress so we got the Stearns and Foster extra firm innerspring, the very hardest one. It has a name but our sales person gave it the nickname “the brick“! I will look on the invoice and see if I can find an actual model number if you’re interested in a good oldfashioned firm mattress that will last. ETA he is 70, I am 67.
Purchased a Stearns and Foster Lux Estate extra firm last June. Spent $3,400. Not even 6 months later our full body imprints (we weight 150 and 210) were on mattress and it had a ridge running down the length of the mattress with stitching missing at that corner of the bed. Since we didn’t buy their boxspring (bc we had a relatively new one) it voided the warranty. Emailed them several times and they basically told me to not contact them any further.
*cracks knuckles* I work at a mattress store and I know more about the specs on these things than any of my customers probably care about. First of all: for your own sanity, do not buy a mattress without trying it out in person first. Even if the online-only purchases come with free returns it is NOT worth the hassle. It's legitimately so much easier to go to a store and have a brief conversation about the way you sleep with someone who knows mattresses. Different mattresses are all made to support different sleep needs, someone who is knowledgeable will likely be able to match you with the best one to address your needs in your budget. With that said, knowing only from your post that you're a side sleeper, here are my luxury hybrid recs. Best of the best: Tempur-pedic. These things are built to last 25 years. Fantastic if you're a hot sleeper, have any pain, and/or toss and turn. (Side note: a lot of people are convinced that tossing and turning is normal. It's not, it's a sign that you're struggling to get comfortable on your bed). Specific model recommendation to start with is the Pro Adapt 2.0 Medium Hybrid. A bed as good as this is an investment in the way you heal, feel, and function, but holy shit is it worth it. I've fallen asleep on this one in the store in five MINUTES by accident while not even tired or intending to fall asleep, just testing it out. I need to physically restrain myself from laying on this bed in between customers. Having had plenty of time to try all the top brands... This one's my personal fave. Great if you don't like the feel of Tempur pedic: Purple. I typically find that people who don't like the feel of Tempur love the feel of purple and vice versa. It's kind of a coin toss. Either way, both fantastically supportive. Purple is also really great for people with chronic conditions; the gel flex grid adapts to support your body no matter what position you're in Very good option if these two are a little out of the budget: Sealy Posturepedic hybrids. Not as durable as the above two, and won't give as much targeted support or pressure relief, but still very comfortable. If you have any hip pain or back pain, posturepedics actually have some extra coils in the middle third of the bed (where your hips/back go) for added support there. FYI, if you're a side sleeper, a firm mattress isn't recommended. A firm puts too much pressure on shoulders/hips for side sleepers. Medium and plush/soft mattresses don't sacrifice support, they just add comfort layers. I'm going to stop here before I never shut the fuck up about my esoteric mattress knowledge 😭😅
Stomach sleepers usually need something on the firmer side so your hips don't sink in too much. I'll give you some "good-better-best" recs that some of my stomach sleeper customers have really liked. Good: Nectar premier memory foam, if you want to keep it around $1000 or under then memorial day sales are gonna be your best friend (many companies go until the end of the month). Even in a medium, nectar is definitely on the firmer side for memory foam because it's denser and higher quality. As far as I've seen, nectar seems to be the most durable for memory foam mattresses. Better: if you don't like the feel of memory foam as much as an innerspring bed, Serta Perfectsleeper with a Pillowtop (I actually have a Serta perfectsleeper! Genuinely very supportive for the price point it's at) Best: if you like the firm feel, Stearns and Foster has an extra firm mattress that's specifically designed for stomach sleepers! Lux Estate 13.5" extra firm. If that feels too hard for your preference, the 15" firm is great too. Edit: OP I'm sorry for being a nerd in your comments section LOL
How are you mentally and physically doing? Lol! My mattress was my largest purchase mistake of my life. I don't really know what to do. My Sealy Postupedic I bought in December is soft, but felt like medium in store, thought it'd be OK. But I'm a hot sleeper so on those hot nights, it just turns to mush. I'm a side and back sleeper. There doesn't seem to be a mattress out there for people like me that is supportive of both positions? I bought a 3 inch latex topper to throw on top, which surprisingly did help for a couple months. But, recently it has been really uncomfortable. I took the topper off the mattress last night and finally fell back to sleep, so I guess for now maybe my body is okay with the mattress again, but I feel like this is just gonna go in a loop. I feel horrible having spent so much money and it not work out, and to buy something else, and scared to buy something else that might not even work out. If I decide to look for something else, anyone have any brand/model recommendations for my sleeping profile? Should I skip big box stores Mattress Firm and Mattress Warehouse? I'm in Maryland, if anyone has any store recommendations. Thanks for reading!
I had that one before I exchanged for the Sealy! It was horrible for side sleeping but felt fine in store. It is so difficult!
That's the issue I had with the Sterns and Foster bed I had tried before the Sealy - it was too firm for my upper back, but perfect for lower back. Now the Sealy is too soft for my lower back, or actually, my entire back just seems to sink into the dumb thing.
