No. I know the difference between tufting and quilting. At any rate, there are manufacturers that will give you decorative tufts with rosettes and everything. Regardless. I think we’re effectively saying the same thing and getting hung up on semantics. I think we’re effectively agreeing that we’re not counting that in your list. That said…my Vispring is hand tufted. You can add that to your list.
We have a Vispring and just ordered a second one. All natural materials is important to us, as is a high quality sleep.
I went down this rabbit hole too many times… There is a lot of personal preference, but here’s mine— Never memory foam, make me handicapped, sink in, can’t move bullshit. Latex is a massive step up— sink onto, not into. Aerloom’s higher end beds have micro coils (lots of support) with latex on top. Step up from that— Kluft. Same company, supposedly better product. Aerloom made my back feel 90% better than the very pricey online bed in a box bullshit I had purchased a few years prior. Next step up Vispring. No foam. Springs, cotton, wool, horse hair (if you’re fancy). Feels like an 80s bed, but in a good way. Back pain gone. There is a NY company that makes handmade beds like Vispring, but way less expensive. Didn’t buy because I couldn’t try them out in California. Might be a great mid price option. Google will find them for you. Remember lots of margin in mattresses. Ignore their “xyz” sale and ask for no less than 33% off .
In my old house we had two emperor mattresses.. definitely go for the zip and link. On paper the mattresses were an easy fit but in practice it took a lot of effort to get them in. Unless you live in a very open plan high ceiling'd bungalow. Also we now have a sleepeezee superking with a pillow top. It's as good as the vispring and hypnos that I've previously had. The emperor beds were awful so I wouldn't recommend that supplier.
Tried it in JL Oxford Circus. Felt quite misformed, especially compared to the other ones.
I have a ViSpring. My husband and I invested 11 years ago and it’s still perfect. Insanely expensive, though. Worth it for us. Will last a really really really long time.
Helix is great for what it is, but totally different ballpark than ViSpring. That’s like comparing Kia and Lexus. Also Helix is literally 5”-6” of poly and memory foam.
I have a vispring and despite being really comfortable in store the reality is not great for me. I wake up with lower back pain most mornings. I think the bed base is really important (I don’t have their divan). Their customer service has been good though and they will review it with me and change the firmness if needed.
What actually holds up for heavier sleepers isn’t the usual bed-in-a-box vs legacy brand debate. It really comes down to whether the mattress is built like furniture instead of something disposable. Once you get into brands like Vispring, Hästens, Shifman, and McCroskey, you’re in a completely different category. These aren’t relying on thick layers of foam that break down. They’re using things like hand-tied coils, horsehair, wool, cotton, and dense natural fillings that actually bounce back instead of staying compressed. That’s why people talk about them lasting 15 to 25 years when everything else is getting replaced after 5 to 8. They just don’t sag the same way because the materials don’t behave that way. The other thing people overlook is that these beds are meant to be part of a full setup, not just thrown on whatever frame you already have. A lot of the consistency you hear about with Vispring or Hastens comes from using the right base underneath, whether that’s a sprung divan or something equally solid. Even the best mattress will start to fail early if it’s sitting on weak slats or a frame with no center support. You’ll also notice these brands don’t go heavy on soft pillow tops. They keep things firmer and use tufting to hold everything in place, which is a big reason they hold up better under more weight. The usual warning signs still exist, like body impressions or that hammock feeling, but they tend to show up way later. It’s a lot more money upfront, but you’re buying something that’s meant to last decades, not just make it through a warranty. Now when you hit the lower middle mattress circuit, there are a group of mattresses designed for heavier folk. Big Fig, Titan Series, Helix Plus, Nolah Evo Comfort Plus, and ThermoBalance Elite. Then there are some that are just good at handling larger folks like Engineered Sleep, DLX, BackScience, Charles P Rogers Lifetime 8, to name a few
I actually think Avocado is not that bad. I tested several a few weeks ago, while at my friends showroom on the west coast. While they are comfy, construction is just ok. They use polypropylene as a scrim and it is glued to the coils and they wrap the coils with polypropylene too. The coils are on a two turn whereas harvest uses three, but the coil diameters are a bit different so no big deal, but the handles are a nice touch. I think Avocado has gradually upped their game recently, but their prices have gone up too. They state that the mattress is organic, but not completely. The mattresses are very comfortable to lie on and the basic green, is reasonably priced as BiB's go. Although when you get to the very plush versions and their new Grand Luxe, you are talking 24k for an Avocado mattress. At that point, I am buying Shifman or ViSpring. The Green with the boxtop jumps up to a 4k mattress (all in King). I think for that, buy the base Green and a 3" Talalay topper. Despite all that, it is a nice feeling mattress and worthy of a showroom floor. They seem to be improving things as they grow and they tell a nice story along the way. I think Birch, Naturepedic, and if you like all latex, Abasan is likely a better choice. If you are comparing the upper middle range Avocado's Royal Pedic is a nice choose too. Avocado is rather strict on their MAP pricing too. My bud does sell quite a bit of them though, so their popularity is rising. That is my two cents.
