Wind Hard Tiny Pro 10D 800FP Down Sleeping Bag Quilt

Down doesn’t insulate as well when it’s compressed beneath you in a sleeping bag. Quilts have no bottom insulation which makes them lighter and pack smaller. They are also more versatile. I have a -1c comfort rated quilt which I use for 3 seasons. It’s as warm as my 0c rated sleeping bag, but much more pleasant to use in warmer weather because it’s easier to regulate your temperature with. A good budget quilt is the Aegismax Wind Hard from AliExpress.

I would get a quilt instead of a 3 season bag; they’re lighter, more versatile and pack smaller. I have a Hyberg Slumber 400 and I love it, used it down to around 0c and kept warm. The Aegismax Wind Hard from aliexpress is amazing value if you’re on a tighter budget.

I find it much easier to regulate temperature with a quilt than a sleeping bag. If it’s cold, you can attach it to your mat with straps, but I just tuck the edges under my legs as I sleep on my back. The ability to kick a leg out and not having to faff around with zips is amazing. Mine has a closed footbox. An openable foot box doesn’t seal perfectly so often lets some cold air in. A closed footbox is also lighter. If you’re an active sleeper, definitely get a wide quilt.

Most down gear is not highly breathable because the fabric has to be calendered to make it downproof. Calendering uses heat and pressure to squish the fibers closer together. Wind Hard Tiny Pro is a great value as a quilt. It's too small to use as a sleeping bag, though. Better brands do go out of their way to use quality shell fabrics. BPL tested EE's 7D and 10D fabrics: they have high Moisture Vapor Transfer Rate (MVTR) and moderate Air Permeability, which means that they are decently breathable (for calendered fabrics). But calendered fabrics will never be as breathable as cotton bed sheets. Sorry. :)

I did some informal side-by-side Vader tests (just blowing through the fabric with my mouth): - EE 10d (Copperfield) has less Air Permeability (AP) than OR Shadow, MH Kor Airshell, and OR Ferrosi. - MH Ghost Whisperer has maybe half the AP of EE 10D. Not a lot. - AegisMax 10D Wind Hard Tiny Pro is very close to Ghost Whisperer. Probably not noticeably different. - A no-name down summer bag/quilt from AliExpress has almost no AP. I use this often, and do not find it objectionable. To be fair, I don't want any of these next to skin. However, none of them bother me, when I am cool enough to need them. I hope that helps.

A common combination is a 20F quilt and a 40-50F synthetic over-quilt. There are more sophisticated setups (see Timmermade and Nunatak), but those two cover a wide temperature range. Aegismax and IceFlame (China) have some of the most budget-friendly down.

In that price range I’d go with a quilt from aegis max or ice flame. Not as high quality as more expensive options but i think will offer the best bang for your buck in terms of down. I have used a kelty cosmic 20 car camping and it was not even warm to 30 degrees F (-1 C). It’s also quite heavy and bulky.

I actually quite like my aegismax. Decent enough, it frequently goes inside a 20° quilt to buy me comfort down to 0°F

I have these insanely tiny down sleeping bags from Ali Express. I typically use them as a second bag when cold weather camping but have used them when staying at airbnb etc. 

I have one of these. Last time I used it was 20c at night. Ended up not using it and using a thin blanket instead. Granted its not that hot very often but was way too sweaty.
