Mi first bag was Coleman mummy synthetic bag. 50$. Good till 32F, then you’re really cold. Second bag is Nemo disco 15F. ~300$ on sale. And I got Disco 30F for 200$. Coleman isnt compact but does the job. Nemo’s got some room at expense of worth but they’re compact AF

The temperature ratings on higher end bags will adhere to an industry standard, namely ISO 23537/EN 13537 which specifies the testing requirements as well as provide you with a comfort, limit and extreme temperature rating. From what I can see, Coleman doesn't seem to provide that so you'll be forced to trust their marketing numbers. For example, the ISO/EN tested bags assume you are wearing a warm base layer, hat and using a sleeping pad with a R4.8 rating. Who knows what Coleman is expecting you to be using? If you go with the Coleman, make sure you test it out before you use it on a trip. Set it up on your deck or balcony and you'll know within 15 min whether or not you made the right choice.

Breathable fabric, Water resistance, true temp bag You would die in a Coleman 0° bag if it had to be in 0° weather. Pack size, weight, durability of the fabric, filling ( down, synthetic, some cheap ass material).the cut of the bag or style

I bought a Coleman 0 deg sleeping bag at Ocala FL Walmart back in the early 2000s. Was out on an impromptu weekend and needed a bag. I think I paid $40 for it. It was actually a great bag and I still own it. I quit using it bcs it is a synthetic fill 0 deg bag and doesn't pack down small enough for my pack. But for car camping 100%. Never found another one like it. Loved it!. Worst case, you don't have a ton invested. Although, you can find several comparable bags for around the same price. We have so little faith in Coleman brand these days and rightly so, but from time to time they actually still make a good product.

Weight Pure and simple The Coleman bag you’re referencing is probably close to 10 pounds High end gear may weigh less than a pound and give you the same RF factor essentially. I’m pushing the boundaries when I’m calling out 1 pound but current gear is close to that. It’s also super high fill down, probably north of 1000 full[Fill] power……. Expensive stuff

Eh, I've got a Coleman that's a true 0 degree bag. The only downside is the thing weighs like 8lbs and is the size of my 30L day pack just by itself. Useless unless car camping.

Packed size/overall weight, and actual warmth. A Coleman bag might be rated for 0*F but that may be its lowest “oh shit” rating, whereas a 0* bag from Western Mountaineering can often take you there without issue. For reference, I have a 20* bag from WM and have often taken it to 20* easily, and even as low as 0* (with some caveats: In a tent with another person, hot water bottle in the foot box, wearing thermal base layers, and a down jacket - I was very cozy). More expensive bags also tend to use down fill, which is considerably lighter and packs down much smaller, making it easier to haul for backpacking trips. Packed size and weight doesn’t matter as much for car camping trips where you don’t have to hike with all your gear to your campsite. A bag being heavy or relatively large when packed doesn’t make it a bad sleeping bag, it just makes it inefficient for certain uses. I’d happily camp with your Coleman bag, but I would never take it backpacking.

Cheaper brands do not abide by the same temperature rating standards as mid-high end brands (ISO). So the temperature ratings are generally a finger in the wind guess. As someone mentioned a 0 degree Coleman bag is likely a 20 degree bag with higher end bags. And keep in mind, that is "survival" rating... Not comfort rating. Comfort is usually 10-15 degrees warmer (ie a 20 degree bag is comfortable down to 30-35). So that bulky, heavy Coleman bag is probably only comfortable down to about 35 degrees .. At best.
