If you're going to do winter camping you may need to layer up if you use mild bag which I personally don't like doing at all. I have a sleeping bag for most seasons (excluding locations where temps are going to be sub 8 degrees) and then a winter bag for anything below that. My allrounder is a Coleman Mudgee C-3, it's good because it's quite warm and you can just turn it into a blanket really easy. I found on a 5degree night out at Goondiwindi it was not enough and I had to throw longs to make it comfortable. My winter bag is a Coleman Big Game C-12 and while she's got plenty of bulk, it's very warm and I've slept on a self-inflating on a stretcher in shorts and a t-shirt on 1-3degree nights. Just had to keep my head and face warm. Your mileage may vary, but I've found that 2 bag combo has worked for me for a few years now.

I've used a basic, heavy, canvas and flannel bag from Coleman for years for winter camping. It's definitely not something you would take backpacking. I can't recall the exact name of the bag, but under 150-200 for a beast of a piece of sleep system is pretty great. The one I have is carhartt brown with red flannel if that helps.

Dude that's crazy! I'm from Australia so snow camping cold is like 20F/-7C. I kind of wish this bag fully unzipped for camping in warmer conditions, but you can't have it both ways. It feels like most of my friends are car/canoe camping these days so kits are getting bigger. The Coleman Big Game is my new best friend, it's just like getting into bed. Insane value for the price, but it'd be like 35/40 liters.

The problem I've had with big square bags in cold weather is the foot box. It's too big and gets cold spots. I jam a shirt or jacket down there to fill in the corners I have a Coleman Big Game sleeping bag. It's big and warm.

I agree this is the way. Two bags. Originally bought a bag rated for -10c but woke up shivering in the middle of the night of -6c. Now I use a Coleman rectangular bag over my -6c down bag. Makes a world of difference. Plus that with the double bag system you can use just the one in more warmer temps.

Most rectangular Coleman sleeping bags can be zipped together and won't break the bank.
