I love my Coleman Brazos 20° sleeping bag and they can be zipped together to make a double. Super warm but not too hot for the summer. I’ve camped with it in 30° and woke up toasty.

There’s a bag called the Coleman brazos on REI, it’s about $40, weighs 4 pounds or so, and is bulky but nothing insane, it has a 30 degree rating. I bought this to car camp in Alaska last year and it worked beautifully, the lowest temp it got to was about 30 degrees and it kept me warm. If you’re sleeping on the ground though you really need a halfway decent sleeping pad with an r value of 3+ in addition to the sleeping bag, you’ll be cold if not, I was sleeping on an air mattress in the back of a car.

I got a modular sleep system at the thrift store about $14 so I use that when it gets very cold if it's going to be 30 to 40° or more, I'll use my 20° Coleman bag just since it's lighter, but the sleep system is actually really quite nice, if very heavy. It's been nice for very cold weather. I'd love a quality, light, very cold rated quilt or bag but I can't afford it for a while unless something washes up at the thrift store again. In warm weather I use a hammock I also got there

A comforter from Walmart would not keep you warm in 20F. I would buy a 20F Coleman on Amazon. They're not as pricey or pretty but they're quality.

I agree this is the way. Two bags. Originally bought a bag rated for -10c but woke up shivering in the middle of the night of -6c. Now I use a Coleman rectangular bag over my -6c down bag. Makes a world of difference. Plus that with the double bag system you can use just the one in more warmer temps.

Most rectangular Coleman sleeping bags can be zipped together and won't break the bank.
