Buy it through Backcountry.com, you will be able to get around $180 or less. I purchased it a month ago and this product is awesome.
It all depends on if you're car camping or backpacking. This is a car camping bag. Not what you'd want for backpacking. And unfortunately, good backpacking bags aren't cheap. You're paying for the amount of down, it's size when packed and weight.
Legit site. And I learned that Marmot and Ex Officio were under the same parent company as Coleman. Didn't know that. If you're car camping, and have looked around to see if it's cheaper elsewhere, this would probably do the job. I would guess that you'd probably be good to about 15-20 degrees. If you're backpacking I'd go another way. The only thing I'd be concerned about with this one is the zippers. So I'd look in to their warranty.
I don't think this is a scam. But I don't think it's an amazing deal either. I think its original price is ridiculously high, but the discounted price may be worth it if it suits your needs. It is only 650 fill weight It is duck down, inferior to goose down It advertised as 0°, but its tested rate is 8° and its comfort rating is 20° It weighs over 4 lbs
They brought back the Peak1 name. It's OK stuff for what it is. A bit overpriced for what it is.
I am a known collector of sleeping bags. I have more than 20 and 1 is a North Face Cat's Meow i bought in 1989, so I have a bit of experience on the subject.. I got the 0° Coleman Peak 1 from my work's incentive site. I would not have gotten it otherwise as I have Sea to Summit, Marmot, kelty, (pre-bass pro) Cabela Instint bags, etc... I took it out my Peak 1 on my November hunting trip. Temps were in the upper teens/ low to mid twenties at night. I had a sea to summit liner and a Mr Buddy Heater at the ready to use but never needed them. I was hot in this bag. I mean, half zipped up and still hot. I was shocked. I mean shocked. The only Coleman gear I have is a stove and a lantern as their gear ain't what it use to be.. and this bag out performed my expectations. Now. I was on a cot with a memory foam pad. I was dressed well. Do with this as u may as I have a slightly different bag. I am a cold sleeper tho. But my Peak 1 has more power fill down than my kelty and marmot and it looks very well made. This bag is coming on many more trips.
The temperature ratings on higher end bags will adhere to an industry standard, namely ISO 23537/EN 13537 which specifies the testing requirements as well as provide you with a comfort, limit and extreme temperature rating. From what I can see, Coleman doesn't seem to provide that so you'll be forced to trust their marketing numbers. For example, the ISO/EN tested bags assume you are wearing a warm base layer, hat and using a sleeping pad with a R4.8 rating. Who knows what Coleman is expecting you to be using? If you go with the Coleman, make sure you test it out before you use it on a trip. Set it up on your deck or balcony and you'll know within 15 min whether or not you made the right choice.
