r/UltralightQuilt vs Sleeping Bag for Cold-Weather?

I have exactly the same combination and one is great in the mountains in the summer and the other is great during shoulder season when it is colder and tends to be windier.

There is not a whole lot out there as far as reviews. I believe the Timmermade Coati is the only one out there. But basically there is a 6” flap of fabric at the quilt opening to seal off drafts. You manipulate it with your hands and tuck it under you and your body holds it in place. Or add shock cord to the channel for edge tension like the offerings from Nunatak, UGQ, or Katabatic. But as I understand it from Dan, the skirt quilt edge tension is better as the tension is applied to the skirt, not a down chamber, which can compress that down. One of my favorite things about it is getting the neck opening snapped closed. On my other quilts, I always have a hell of a time with this since the quilt is strapped to the pad. With this, you just snap it in front of your face when you’re outside of it, and slip it over your head. FWIW I also have a Katabatic Grenadier for winter and that thing is amazing too. Seals out drafts so well and is ridiculously lofty. For anyone who doesn’t want to wait weeks and weeks for a quilt I would quickly push them in the direction of Katabatic. I have heard the Timmermade lottery is extremely difficult, but I somehow managed to win on my first try.

As others have said, the Katabatic is the choice. However the Katabatic is comfort rated, so an EE 20 is like a 30 deg Palisade. I am not familiar with PCT temps but you may be able to get away with a Palisade. I sleep warm to 20 on a CCF pad.

I love my Katabatic quilt. Extremely light, can open up and breath in warmer hunts and definitely warm enough sub-freezing when buttoned up. Been using it for 5 years on Colorado hunts, all kinds of conditions.

There isn’t really an absolute best, but I like Katabatic for a quilt and western mountaineering or feathered friends for a bag. I prefer quilts down to around the low 20s, bags below that. Having a pocket in your quilt for a sleeping pad seems silly to me.

r/PNWhikingSleeping bag/quilt recommendations for mid-June

I think 20-30° is the right range for PnW Cascade backpacking in shoulder season. And for me, also summer as I am a cold sleeper. And June is still shoulder season in the PnW. I’ve ran into a lot of snow drifts in June. Hammock Gear makes great quilts that are pretty reasonable. I also have a Katabatic, though that’s a bit more money (though not a ton).

r/UltralightAre quilts even worth it?

I have a Katabatic and a Hammock Gear Burrow UL (which does not appear of their site anymore). Both are great. The main complaint that I understand about EE is they are generous with their rated temp. Not that they are bad quilts. But any quilt with less than 20D fabric is going to be a bit fragile. So don’t wear it like a poncho and go off to pee and let it get hung up in brush.

Katabatic or EE quilt and straight stuff it in whatever (pannier, tail bag, handlebar bag) - no stuff sack

My Katabatic quilts. After freezing my butt off too many times in the REI 30-degree bag that somehow never felt warm I no longer worry about being cold at night. Saving a bunch of weight didn’t hurt either.
