Accept that its worth carrying an extra pound to have a wider mat and a wider sleeping bag and actually be able to sleep well. I rock a long/wide MEC Draco -9c bag in cold months and a USGI MSS Patrol bag in summer here in Canada. Both are roomy enough to sprawl a bit. For pad I dont go any narrower than 25" but even then the knee might be off the pad a bit, never caused much issue though. Warm blood will circulate to it.
I just replaced the black bag with a -9 degree down bag from MEC. I still use the green bag in the warmer season and the goretex bivvy gets some use as well. It really doesnt matter if the bag snaps together with the bivvy or not.
I’ve had good luck with my Draco -9 from MEC. They go on sale occasionally and I picked up mine for about $160. Really hard to beat for a down bag. You can definitely get cheaper if you don’t care about weight or pack size at all, but you didn’t mention an application.
Go to MEC, the Centaurus (Synthetic) or Draco (Down) in -9°C are both good. The temps might be overkill for your camping needs, but there are 0°C versions of both as well.
