Well I paid £525 for one of these: https://www.needlesports.com/Catalogue/Camping/Sleeping-Bags/Mountain-Equipment-Fireflash But the £400+ area is where the higher performance bags start for solid -10C performance. You don’t need to spend that kind of money to be warm enough, probably £200 gets you something heavier but warm and solid. The bag in your post is probably pretty warm. I’m sure the bag material is a good few hundred grams heavier than on my bag but there’ll be a good few hundred grams more feathers too. Less effective feathers but enough I think for it to be fairly decent in the -5C to -10C band, I just didn’t like the knees. People are spending money to shave weight once performance is in the bag. So if you don’t mind 500g+ more weight, you can save money and get the same performance. Army bags are a great example of that, cheap, huge but actually quite warm and comfy. I’ve not slept in the modern army sleep system but back in the day I was in the infantry and in those days the bags were down and huge but so warm. Like 3kg and 30L volume huge. As I understand it the modern sleeping system is synthetic? Btw this is a good general wild camping site to read through, this guy is legit: https://wildwalkinguk.com
Thermarest are very responsible with their temperature claims in my experience. Sounds like Oex are having a laugh. I’m going out on Thursday to summit camp and I’ll be taking an M.E Fireflash that is genuinely warm at -15C, taking my winter tent too. When it’s real chilly I like to have zero shelter anxiety. I do my silly-light risky camps in Summer.
