Based on 1 year's data from Mar 18, 2026 How it works
The OEX Fathom ev400 is available for £60 at the moment. If you don't mind it being on the bulky side, it's a solid option. -1 comfort rating but I've had it down past that with just a base layer on inside.
Yeah. Used it out in the peaks this weekend, I was roasting. Had to unzip and go quilt-style. It weighs about 1100g I think so it's not the lightest but it's definitely warm and it's well-made enough. Cinches down nicely around your head in the cold. I used it from October onwards last year and it looks brand new
I've used an OEX ev400 for 2 years. I've been fine down to -4ish with a good mat and wearing thermals. Me and my boy call it 'the hot dog'. In spring/summer it's warm enough that I've usually got it unzipped, although I do sleep warm. It does feel like it's not that durable, but it's still in perfect condition after a good 50 nights. I think I paid a little under £50 for it in some sort of winter sale.
I would add 10c on to their temperature claims, and then decide if that temperature is suitable for you. It's not just not a 'true' 4-season sleeping bag, it's a 3-season at best.
I have an EV400 and have used it in early spring without much bother. I don't know what the temperature was, but cold enough for hailstones. I was a bit chilly at times but not too bad. I don't think I'd trust the -1dgC claim but for the price, I reckon it's superb value nonetheless.
All OEX bags are a bit liberal with the temperature ratings, something to keep in mind. i have the fathom 400 synthetic for bivvying and no way is it a -1 degree comfort and -8 limit bag.
Ev400 is good, i use it for bivvying.
Really depends when and where. I own this and it's not particularly warm, but you'd probably be ok on a 5c night if you also have a good mat and lots of layers while inside it. I camped in minus 2c before and had to double it up with a second sleeping bag and wear loads of layers.
Hi,if you can afford the pipe dream 600 then go for it,I have it and it wasn’t too warm for me at 0 degrees but then if you want to go colder it will be capable.i like to spend big on a cold weather bag and cheap to mid on a bag for rest of the year.i have a cheap Oex(£50)4 season synthetic bag that gets me all the way down to 5 degree comfortably and I don’t have to worry about it getting wrecked and it only weighs just over a kilo.
Right now I am using an Oex 4 season bag as my summer bag😂,crap winter bag but great for general 3 season use and is only 1050g. Coat me £45 and means I can not worry about getting it wrecked
Yeah the 2020 ish version
I nearly spat coffee all over my keyboard laughing! 100% correct. I've got an Ev400 sleeping bag (next notch up) which I used when I first got back into all this a couple of years ago and was a bit more chilly than I'd like at single digits. They claim -1 for that one but they must have a particularly sadistic concept of "comfort" if that's the case.
I used mine over the Easter bank holiday last year and was a bit cold, so no, February's probably pushing it, though of course it depends on how cold it is. Everyone's different but I wouldn't take that one too far into single digits and definitely not the minuses. I'd be tempted to do a trial run in the garden or something, and have the option to cobble together a makeshift hot water bottle with a big nalgene or pack a load of those heat pad things in case you get caught out. (Obvious "don't try to heat your tent with a stove" warning applies.)
Ive got the Fathom! Ive used it in spring/summer/ early autumn and it was fine. Great even considering the price and the size. Wouldn't use it in freezing temperatures though, I have another bag for that
