Thanks for your reply, I’ve bitten the bullet and gone for the alpine 600. Partly because I’m from Sheffield so feels good to support local brand! Looks like a great bag!

You mentioned your budget of £300. Rab Alpine 600, I recommend it every time, 1.1kg, £225 (Go Outdoors) -9,-12,-31. I've used it in the garden down to -4°c in a 3 season tent with a R-value 3.8 mat. I was so warm I had to unzip slightly, I wasn't even wearing socks. I used it recently in Scotland in a failed camp (winds changed direction during night and were gusting hard, worried break tent) and it was flawless, it kept me nice a cosy. Just obviously make sure you have a good mat to pair it with. Its also down so it squishes nice and small to fit in a bag. Other than that, I would say bolster your temps with a S2S thermolite reactor. Correction -5°c is the comfort temp, the -9°c is the RAB sleep limit.

So if you have a Go Outdoors card, what I did one year was found a sale bargain on a Rab Alpine Pro on another website in April, and then asked GO to price match... which they did + an extra 10% This gives you the piece of mind that you can take it back to an actual store rather than online + an extra 10% which is not to be sniffed at. I got the Alpine Pro 600 for £150 a few years ago in April this way... so I'm sure you could get a winter bag the same. So I had luck in April... maybe others know when better sale times are.

April through October is my 400-time. In the end it really depends on what your personal comfort limits are and at what temperatures you would switch to the winter bag. I imagine the Norwegian coast is a bit warmer during winter than the Swedish coast, due to being more maritime? Regarding Rab: I have used the Neutrino 400 now during six seasons (this is the seventh) and I am really happy. It probably has lost a bit of fluff but that is to be expected after that time. Washed it once because I didn't use a liner in the beginning, but otherwise used always a liner, always hung it out after a hike and stored it in the cotton bag. If you have the money, go for it! They seem to have added a Neutrino 500 to their range and that would be my choice today, between the 600 and the 400. Otherwise, they also have a 650-cuin product line (cheaper but heavier) which is probably just as good.
