The Rab Ascent range is great. Very roomy inside. My Ascent 700 kept me warm in just my pants in -6.5ºC temperatures. And yet it's only ISO comfort rated to -2ºC. (Rab themselves rate it to -9ºC) They have the Ascent 900 and 1100 too which are both obviously warmer. Both are available under £300 if you shop around, e.g. the 1100 is £299 at Go Outdoors right now.

Yeah, it's one of those brands I would not hesitate to buy. The Rab Ascent 900 would be a close match, but the sale price on that Mammut you found looks really good, hard to beat actually. The synthetic one is probably so massive when packed that it would be good if you use a pulk but probably too big for a backpack.

My wife and I both have the Acsent 900. Hers is the women's version, a bit wider in the hip. These have been fine. One nice feature is that if you get a left and right, you can zip them together. You get your own foot pocket, but the rest is shared space.

I’m still using my rab ascent 900 at the minute. Days got warmer but nights didn’t get the message haha. My rab cost me £216 and it’s an amazing sleeping bag. The “stuff sack” it comes with is naff so I’ve got a different one so I can pack it down smaller but other than that it’s spot on

you will struggle with Mountain Hardware phantom -40 with wide shoulders. I am 6'4" and the long version just about fits but the shoulders are VERY tight despite it is bit wider than the regular. Fwiw my shoulders are wide but not exceptionally so for my height but I am single digit bodyfat and despite that find it almost impossible to zip up and very constricted. Warmest bag I have by my kid uses it more than me and I tend to use Rab ascent and ascent pro in various fill weights depending on how cold (UK hills so almost freezing down to -15C ish cold seasons generally) which is heavier and sleeps cooler but much more room.

April through October is my 400-time. In the end it really depends on what your personal comfort limits are and at what temperatures you would switch to the winter bag. I imagine the Norwegian coast is a bit warmer during winter than the Swedish coast, due to being more maritime? Regarding Rab: I have used the Neutrino 400 now during six seasons (this is the seventh) and I am really happy. It probably has lost a bit of fluff but that is to be expected after that time. Washed it once because I didn't use a liner in the beginning, but otherwise used always a liner, always hung it out after a hike and stored it in the cotton bag. If you have the money, go for it! They seem to have added a Neutrino 500 to their range and that would be my choice today, between the 600 and the 400. Otherwise, they also have a 650-cuin product line (cheaper but heavier) which is probably just as good.
