Rab - Neutrino Pro 700 Down Sleeping Bag

I've not owned the Neutrino 200 but I've owned numerous Rab sleeping bags and have always found their temp ratings somewhat reliable. My current winter bag is the Neutrino 700. I also own the Ev300 and think it is a good value for money bag and I have used it a heck of a lot and it's proved to be very durable, but I think their temp ratings are absolutely absurd. If temperatures are forecast to go below about 8C I take a different bag. Regarding the Thermarest quilt, I agree with you, the down migrates a lot, but if I give the quilt a gentle shake along it's width and along it's length and give the quilt a good amount of time to loft, I find there's not too many empty areas. I certainly find the Corus 32 warmer than my Ev300.

I would recommend a temperature rating much lower than what you think you will need. I would also recommend buying from reputable brands such as Rab, ME, Alpkit etc. This is potentially life sustaining equipment so you want something you can trust, and you also do get what you pay for. The down in a Rab sleeping bag is going to be of higher quality than something you find for one quarter the price on Temu and will be more durable and longer lasting. My winter sleeping bag is a Rab Neutrino Pro 700. If I was you, I would concentrate on building a 3-season kit together ready for the spring and save up throughout the year £300-400 for a really good sleeping bag ready for next winter.

Okay that pad is not very warm or particularly comfy so it’d be a really bad idea below freezing. I once had one a lot like it. It’ll do okay on soft ground in reasonable weather. It’s very reasonably priced for an 800FP (fill power) quilt and it has some neat features that makes it good on the colder end of the scale. It weighs 760g and should be comfortable at above freezing temperatures. Water resistant down will help it last and dry out faster. You can partially lay it over you in summer, move it fully over when it finally gets cool enough. You can use it even a bit below freezing if you wear an extra layer or two (but don’t use your current pad). I know Sierra Designs well and they’re one of the best of the mid-market for sure. So in terms of a decent lightweight quilt to cover as much of the year that one item can, I think this is the best value for your money. I suspect the price might sting but trust me with sleeping bags/quilts, if you want down, then quality filling is just expensive as a commodity. So decent down bags just don’t come cheap. Down is much warmer per gram and compresses smaller than any synthetic filling. If you want light, down saves you a chunk of weight. The trick is to buy the right thing for your long term needs and then look after it. My 3 season sleeping bag is a Rab Neutrino bag I’ve had for over 10 years now. I’ve slept in it over 100 times. I’ve always dried it out if it gets moist, never got it dirty or soaked, always compressed it the bare mininum in my pack (I don’t use a compression bag), dried it and aired out thoroughly at home and stored it in a loose sack in a wardrobe. It’s still as good as the day it was new and I could sell it for something like £150 on ebay. So if the budget is tight, buy a decent quilt in a little used condition if possible 2nd hand on ebay. But I’d urge you to buy a decent quilt that’ll really do the job.
