My daughter is a very active sleeper at home, but has no problem staying on the pad when camping. We have a smaller Thermarest and an REI Kindercone sleeping bag for her (although I am going to pick up something lighter and more compact for her since we started backpacking with her).

The REI [Kindercone 25](https://www.rei.com/product/235979/rei-co-op-kindercone-25-sleeping-bag-kids) is a great sleeping bag and fits kids up to 5’. They also have one color on clearance right now.

How "chilly"? We just took our 9 year old out to West Texas last week. It was down to 35F at night but 85 in the day. I got him a 25F sleeping bag from REI (Kindercore) years ago, and it still fits. He was fine inside. One way to do it: 1. Pad with good insulation. If you're doing car camping (likely), get a GOOD inflatable pad. You can cheap out with an Intex mattress from Academy, like a queen-sized one that fits in your tent, enough for everyone. Ultralight camping pads aren't really for kids, and not worth the money if you're next to the car. A cheap inflatable mattress and a 12V inflator (or hand pump) will be more comfortable for you. 2. A good sleeping bag. You can also do a double, often two identical bags, just a "left-right" version that zips together into one big one. We have one for the two of us, and when he was little, he would just go in between us. A bit tight, so we quickly shoved him off into his own. Mostly because he likes to kick at night. REI has good ones that are big now, but they can grow into. Put a thicker blanket on top of the mattress under the sleeping bags - it keeps them from sliding around too much, and it adds more insulation under you, as your body compresses the bag filler and make sit less insulating. 3. Warm clothing, but don't overdo it - if they are too warm, they won't be able to sleep and neither will you. If they are "cool" at sunset in the clothes, but not warm, that should be good. If they are "warm" and comfortable, it's too much for the bag. My kid has some lightweight long-sleeved summer "sun" hoodie shirts that he loves to sleep in for camping trips. You can make it special by getting them new "camping pajamas". Feet can get cold even in the summer, so get socks, but they can be thin like the rest of the clothes. Sweaty feet are also uncomfortable, which is why most sleeping bags have vent zippers at the bottom to keep regulate temperature. 4. Sounds weird... but get one of those puffer-style blankets. It doesn't need to be one of those really expensive ones, just get a cheap one that packs small. By putting that on top of the sleeping bag, it helps with keeping the bag warmer. Last week, we had 35F temps at night, with 30-45mph winds blowing the tent around all night. My bag lets me turn around, sleep on my side or stomach, etc, and my back was cold at times. Just draping that blanket on top and over the side helped a LOT, and I was pretty warm in just a tshirt, shorts, and socks. Also, the blanket is really good for wrapping up a kid in the morning when getting breakfast ready.
