Teton Leef and a good sleeping pad is good down to 0*c. Then I added a Get Out Gear down blanket if I needed more (you won't regret this blanket purchase!). All on Amazon and together is half your budget cost.
There are options you don’t need to spend $250 like others are recommending. For that budget I’d look at the Teton Leef models, can get them on Amazon under $80. They aren’t that light and have synthetic fill so won’t be as compact as down but will do the job. Can probably find similar spec on Amazon or REI Outlet.
how much better can sleeping bags get? is there really that much room for improvement? I use a 30°F rated teton mummy bag and i like it, aside from the leg space being too narrow. I can’t imagine there is this much of a difference between sleeping bags. genuine curiosity here, as this is my second bag
I will say I have teton 0° mummy sack and have slept down to 7° in my hammock (with underquilt and top quilt) and been totally comfortable
Granted the underquilt is suppppper warm
Ive used their 20 degree bags in mid 30s to high 20s before and it did well enough, I was still able to comfortably sleep even though it started to push that comfort rating. I'd trust the teton brand to be accurate for their temp guidelines, heavy af though.
I have a Teton 20° bag and I put a down puffer blanket in the bottom, under my legs, and around and over my feet, and overtop my legs, *inside* the sleeping bag. Then I wrap a second puffer blanket overtop on the outside. This, good wool socks, and sleeping in smartwool base layers, and I was toasty down into the low 20s.
i honestly dont know how much warm it provides but i like my s2s reactor bag liner. much better feel than my nylon quilt. but matched with my paria 15deg quilt, ive found it a good winter camp combo. that's with a nemo tensor extreme and ccf pad. also have a zero deg teton bag i use at hunting camp. thing is budget friendly ($100) bulky and wicked cozy. if space isnt concern, and budget is, its a good option. can look into bedrolls too. can throw certain setups in a snowbank and sleep cozy. have no product experience tho
I have the teton bags. I have the 0f and the 20f. I have used the 0f down to 17f and i was cold all night. I would add 20 degrees to those ratings to be comfortable but they work and do the job. Make sure you plan the temperature accordingly. This will make or break your trip. Dont forget an inflatable pad and a closed cell foam pad too, it adds to the warmth and comfort.
I also have a Teton 0F bag and it’s great. Used it earlier this month when it got down into the 40s at night. Wool socks and a hat make a huge difference too. I love that sleeping bag.
Lot of good replies here already. If you're car camping, Id recommend a exped megamat duo and two Teton sleeping bags. They make a very good low temp bag, and they're big. Buy a left and right for you and her and they will zip together too! Much better than a mummy or sleeping bag. Warming water bottles by the fire is a game changer too. Stay warm while you sleep. Probably the only thing that really matters when camping in low temps. If you can't warm you'll be miserable. As an aside, blankets under your pad don't do a whole lot because the insulation comes from the air in the blanket. When you lie on top of it you compress the insulation. It's better than nothing, but it's a pretty compromised experience.
