Y'know that's actually crazy funny, I have the Polara too!! I love it! I asked for it a while back as a present for car camping. My only issue with it as that I want to do trips with my girlfriend, and we wouldn't be able to fit another one in our packing space. Thing is massive Appreciate all your advice. I'm good picking something that's just "cheap and effective" if it can at least be smaller than that. Although your comment has made me wonder, if Teton Sports's 30 degree bag (outer shell of the Polara) is that big, how is a cheaper brand going to make anything smaller 🤔.
I have the Teton Polara (rated for 0 degrees as well but I wanted a rectangular bag because I can’t do mummy bags) and it is amazing. I’ve gone down to 32 degrees in it and been very warm, and I haven’t even had to use the included fleece liner yet. It’s VERY heavy though, so I would never recommend it for backpacking.
I have a 0-degree rated sleeping bag (Teton Polara) and I had to remove the fleece liner for 40-degree nights because it was too warm - but it’s perfect for that weather. I hate mummy style sleeping bags so I needed to find a rectangular one that would still keep me warm.
All my gears teton and it's good. I used one of their older bags rated to -10 and it got to -8 and I was only slightly uncomfortable. Pack works great. I feel like their gear is that level right before you hit the law of diminishing returns.
When it comes to sleeping bags, and a lot of other camping gear, there are 3 attributes: cheap, lightweight, effective. The good news is that you get to pick which 2 of those 3 you want. But, you can only have 2. If you pick cheap and lightweight it's going to suck. If you want cheap and effective it's going to be bulky and heavy. If you want lightweight and effective it's going to be expensive. The only possible way to end up with all three is when someone else bought the expensive, lightweight, effective item and is selling it second hand for cheap. Remember that temperature ratings for sleeping bags are the temperature that won't kill you, not the temperature that you will be comfortable. You probably want a bag that is rated for 10 to 20 degrees colder than what you expect to see. If you will be in 20 to 30° overnight weather get a 0° bag, for 45° weather get a 30° bag. I'm a huge fan of Teton Sports. We have several of their bags. My primary bag is the Polara, it has a fleece liner that can be removed for warmer weather, has kept me feeling warm down to 15°. Lots of them are rectangular and can be zipped together with 2. They have a lifetime warranty, and the company is based in Utah, I used to work down the street from their HQ.
$125. Zero degree rectangular hunters sleeping bag. Dirt cheap, is warm and weighs a ton. Not for backpacking. Most sport & hunting stores have a version of this.
i honestly dont know how much warm it provides but i like my s2s reactor bag liner. much better feel than my nylon quilt. but matched with my paria 15deg quilt, ive found it a good winter camp combo. that's with a nemo tensor extreme and ccf pad. also have a zero deg teton bag i use at hunting camp. thing is budget friendly ($100) bulky and wicked cozy. if space isnt concern, and budget is, its a good option. can look into bedrolls too. can throw certain setups in a snowbank and sleep cozy. have no product experience tho
I have the teton bags. I have the 0f and the 20f. I have used the 0f down to 17f and i was cold all night. I would add 20 degrees to those ratings to be comfortable but they work and do the job. Make sure you plan the temperature accordingly. This will make or break your trip. Dont forget an inflatable pad and a closed cell foam pad too, it adds to the warmth and comfort.
I also have a Teton 0F bag and it’s great. Used it earlier this month when it got down into the 40s at night. Wool socks and a hat make a huge difference too. I love that sleeping bag.
Teton 0 degree bag, it's big and heavy but it's very comfy and like 80$
Lot of good replies here already. If you're car camping, Id recommend a exped megamat duo and two Teton sleeping bags. They make a very good low temp bag, and they're big. Buy a left and right for you and her and they will zip together too! Much better than a mummy or sleeping bag. Warming water bottles by the fire is a game changer too. Stay warm while you sleep. Probably the only thing that really matters when camping in low temps. If you can't warm you'll be miserable. As an aside, blankets under your pad don't do a whole lot because the insulation comes from the air in the blanket. When you lie on top of it you compress the insulation. It's better than nothing, but it's a pretty compromised experience.
