In the late 1980s, in the Greens and Adirondacks, I snowshoe hiked during the winter months. I couldn't afford a true minus 30F sleeping bag but we were able to borrow North Face Expedition bags from the UVM outdoor club. I don't know if they rent to the general public but I'd at least give them a call. Do you know anybody going to UVM? Maybe a student can rent the gear for you. The only other thing would be two bags. Good luck.

Agreed, and each person is affected a little bit different from each other. For myself, I learned i need a bag 10* warmer than ambient to be comfortable. Learned that when testing the -40 Northface dark star in -37c temps.... I was rather cold.... didnt sleep much, was happy when the sun came up!!

Well you can wash it, it just takes a long time. I’ve just aired it out in the sun on a rock or top of my tent. If you’ve got sun, you are great. (I usually do this camping anyway) But if you don’t have sun and it gets soggy, that can be a challenge. I’ve also fluffed it in the dryer at home, either no or low heat. And when stored at home I leave it loose in an oversized bag. But it’s so cozy warm - I love it! (Very old North Face 0° - that I sometimes use with a silk bag liner)
