Thanks! I've had and sold the Kodiak before simply because it's too much cost and bag for my infrequent needs for winter trips. I was looking ar the Badger or Versalite.

Late to the Party, but the Mountain Hardwear Phantom bags are no longer a good value proposition (not to imply that they were before), but you can get a Western Mountaineering Kodiak MF (Microfiber) for $850 or the Storm Shield Version for $985. The Phantom Windstopper 0 degree starts at $1,100. Western Mountaineering is made in the US and so some of the tariff-related inflation is not hitting them as hard, making them a better value proposition. Not to mention Western Mountaineering makes the best down products in the world. Other folks have mentioned Gryphon Gear. Another awesome option. You may need to wait a while to get one though. Feathered friends is great too but I think Western Mountaineering is amazing. My recommendation, Get a Kodiak MF. The Microfiber fabric may look unassuming at first, but it is incredibly durable, tightly-woven fabric with excellent weather/water resistance and it breathes super well, critical for multi-day winter outings. I have a Puma Storm Shield and while I love the fabric and the fortress feel, a laminate fabric like that takes a long time to pack into a stuff sack. It just traps air like a balloon. The microfiber is a dream fabric. A proper microfiber fabric where the filament count is equal to or higher than the denier of the fabric.

I have had Marmot down bags since the early 2000s. I paid ~$400 for the most expensive one in 2005. It had 800 fill down and came in under 3lbs for a 15 degree bag, which was pretty good at the time. It was a pretty generous cut in the shoulders and hips, had a well designed footbox and a great hood. I could take it down to about 25 degrees and be comfy in just a base layer. Add a puffy and I'm good to 15 degrees. The zipper snagged the draft tube constantly and there were some loose stitches and it has leaked a few feathers here and there but it was noticeably better quality than comparable offerings at the time. I still love that bag. 4 years ago I bought a 0 degree bag from Western Mountaineering, I paid about $800 for it. I cross shopped mainstream brands and most were in the $600 range. The biggest difference is that the WM bag is made in California, the others I looked at were made elsewhere. But my $800 got me 900+ fill power down and a 0 degree bag that weighs 3oz less than my 15 degree Marmot bag. The cut is still roomy, and every aspect of the design is just a little better. The footbox, hood, draft tube and collar were all just a little more refined. The zipper NEVER snags, every stitch is perfect, every detail is perfect. I just got back from a 4 night trip. The warmest night was 20 degrees, the coldest was 7. I slept in boxer shorts and a smartwool base layer and was comfortable with a nice margin before feeling cold. I absolutely adore this bag. Camping is my passion. I do it year round, all conditions, it's what I do every vacation. My trips are better when I sleep better. Could I have spent less money and been just as warm and comfortable? Yes. Was it worth $200+ to get a bag made in the US instead of overseas? Yes. Does the tangible difference between a WM bag and a high end Marmot or Thermarest or North Face bag justify the cost difference? Probably not. If I could go back in time would I make the same decision? Absolutely. What expensive sleeping bags do better is make you think about them less, which enables you to be more present in the experience. Good gear disappears from your mind because it just works. To me, it's worth the financial cost to think about the coyotes singing or the meteor shower because I'm not thinking about my sleeping bag.

Western Mountaineering makes 6'6 bags in -25, -30, and -40 ratings. Their Kodiak rated to 0°F goes to 7'0, and you can order bags 'overfilled' - with more down than normal so call it an additional 5 degrees.

FWIW they are above & beyond others, have a lot of loft, and have great resale value. You can find used ones relatively frequently, commonly from mountaineering groups.

I have a western Mountaineering Kodiak. 905g of 850fp down. WM rates it as a -18C bag. I have slept in below -22C and woke up cold and had to put my puffy jacket on. In -15 to 20 I was fine. I har used it with a thermarest xtherm and with exped ultra R5 with a ccf on top. I have always thought I was a cold sleeper. I have since learned that the ISO comfort rating of the bag is only -11C which maybe makes me a warm sleeper? I add a quilt on top of my bag if I plan on cold trips. -20C and below

0° western mountaineering bag. I sleep cold if I don't sleep my trips suck. I've tried every other way. Since I plan on being a lifetime backpacker and doing it until I can't walk anymore, I figured this was worth the investment. I don't buy a lot of gear and take care of what I do have to make it last as long as possible
