WM Summerlite sleeping bag. Lighter more compact than my older 15° bag.
I've got a WM Sumerlite @32F, which has been rock solid for me in low 30's. I still use it as a top quilt for most of the 30-50F hikes in my hammock. I suspect the Versalite is a solid bag based on the performance of the lighter weight version.
Anecdotal of course, but I've never had a problem with my Summerlite at the EN Comfort rating of 40F. I've taken it down into the upper 20s when wearing a puffy and tent booties. I wouldn't recommend it, but I did OK. One of the tricks with the Summerlite with it's continuous baffles is to shake it so that the down is on top and on the sides. I find my down migrates over time and that I get a little cold if I don't shake it to get the down on top and on the sides. Typically, if I shake it, am in a good shelter (typically a 1P Cirriform DW), have a good pad, and am reasonably well fed and well hydrated, I can take it maybe into the mid 30s F without feeling unduly cold. If I add a puffy and tent booties, I can easily get down to 32F without feeling unduly cold (and sleeping well). I should note that I'm male, in my 60s, and am a bit on the "husky" side (6'0", 210#). Given my size, I fill out the bag pretty well, so I'm sure that a Summerlite is a bit warmer for someone of my dimensions than a thinner person.
I have a summerlite and I agree it's fine to about 40F, not 32F. I've used it on short summer hikes (2-5 days) and Europe hut/albergue hikes and it was perfect. I've thought about using it for AT in summer.
I had the same experience with my Summerlite. Was cold at low to mid 30s.
I tested out the Summerlite last year and my feeling on it was the they put just enough feathers to get the rating- which is adequate- though with extensive use (a thruhike) that rating would go away FAST. Thoughts?
A couple of notes on Western 1) their temp ratings are the comfort ratings, not lower limit. 2) the Ultralite is narrower than the Alpinlite, but if you look at comps the Ultralite can generally be considered a standard width. 3) if Megalite is of interest the Sunmerite is the narrower (again standard by industry norms) version.
I am a cold sleeper too. And I’m embarrassed to admit, I could afford a western mountaineering bag. It was 0°. And I’m 59 and I got the 6 foot six version. Giving me tons of down to snuggle into. I actually use this bag way more than just the winter and I’m always toasty warm.
Western mountaineering. I get cold easily even in the summer in Colorado at high altitudes. I also snow camp
Don’t forget to get a really big bag one that goes way over your head. It’s just so cozy.
192cm here. Long versions of Feathered Friends, Western Mountaineering, or Enlightened Equipment bags. For your temp range I use 20F EE quilt. For a tent, you can also get something longer. I use Tarptent Rainbow which leaves me with almost 30 cm to spare length wise.
I liked my quilt when I was doing shorter trips. Once I started doing months at a time I grabbed a western mountaineering bag and I have no regrets. Helps me extend a bit more into shoulder season
Western Mountaineering mummy bag. I do a lot in shoulder season and these are very warm for the weight
